Hello, TGC Golfers. I was wanting to do a RCR of one of my favorite courses that isn't very well known. I am wondering what the best technique(s) are for recreating courses. Thanks in advance!

It depends on your platform. If you have a PC, there's a way to fiddle with the transparency so that you can overlay the GNCD over Google Earth.
Otherwise, get out the measuring sticks and lay everything out manually.
Try to find as much info as possible. Yardage cards, photographs, local knowledge, TV footage.

Erixon, how can you do that? I'm on a PC, Windows to be exact. Although I live in Dayton, my brother in law lives right next to the course so I can get some stuff from him. Also thank you welikeitroughnc, I have started to look at yardage books. The 8th hole will be my challenge- short par 3 onto an island green.

RCR Help?

Okay, I created the first hole, and it looked great, until I actually officially created the hole. While I ghosted the surfaces fine (or so I thought), something went wrong. The real life scorecard measures the hole at 373 yards, but in game it was only 283. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

Okay, so I tried again... And the hole ended in 75 yards less than the real one. Closer, but I'm still not sure what so do.

Did you make sure to match the scales? Do a measurement between two easy to recognise points in Google Earth. Then put down distance markers in the course creator to match these and finally make sure the two lines match exactly. After that make sure not to touch the zoom in either application.
Usually back of tee to back of green is a good measurement.

Usually back of tee to back of green is a good measurement. I tried to map out the hole with many distances. I measured back to front of the black tees, then distance to the next tee up, measured that tee, and so on. The issue came when I tried to line the two up, I needed to move the tee box. That messed it all up and the hole ended short. However, I measured the green and fairway right, but if I use the correct distance from beginning of the fairway to the tee, it ended short. I also measured the entire three click hole on Google Earth to make sure the scorecard was right and I got 373 yards (which is the true yardage.)

hey Jacob....
not sure exactly what method you are using, but I use google earth and a free transparency program called GHOSTIT.... What I did on 18 at Quail Hollow (first hole I started with) was this
I believe the hole played 493 yards.... I used the measuring tool in google earth and drew a line from tee out to the fairway about 275 yards away, then another line from that 275 mark to the green to make sure I had 493 total yards... basically laid down a shot path hole in google earth like I would the GNCD..... Then I ghosted the google earth app and made it transparent over the GNCD and created a hole following as close as I could to the lines I created earlier.... once the waypoints were down, exactly 493 yards... then I zoomed in (and this took a little trial and error) and started laying down my fairway and green textures (with google earth still ghosted) I hope this makes sense.. its really easy once you get started...It may take a few tries to get the fairways and such the right width, but you can use that same measuring tool in google earth and measure width and such and zoom in just right to make it very close to the right size...just fiddle with it and once you get the first green and fairway down, the rest will be easier because you will be able to overlay the hole just laid over the actual pic to line up the rest of the holes,,,
One thing though... You will have to change the designer to design with the mouse and keyboard to be able to use ghost it because a joytstick (like xbox360) will not work right Thanks to boomboom for getting me started in the right direction so all the credit goes to him...
You can get ghost It here
Ghost It
hope this helps....

Thanks! I saw your quail hollow- it looks great. I have a transparency program but my issue I see now is that I didn't use a very common measurement... I had 259 or something and then some random number to the center of the green. I will make sure to use something easier like 250. Can't wait to see Quail Hollow completed!
Also thanks to- welikeitroughnc: great course to look at for RCR ideas ErixonStone: programs for transparency mcbogga: I saw some of your posts on other threads that helped give me ideas of what to do
Hopefully I'm smart enough to get it right with all of your help! Thanks all!

Since my question is somewhat related I figured I'd post it in here. I'm not trying to do a RCR, but I want to use the trace method to follow the sketches I've done for my course. Every hurdle I clear brings another one and it's frustrating. I'm to the point where I'm trying to lay down the fairway and rough and once I put down the fairway brush what's the best way to lay the light rough on top? There doesn't seem to be a way to simply toggle to the rough brushes from the fairway brushes when using keyboard and mouse. Am I missing something? Another issue is the ESC button does not back me out of the fairway brush carousel. Extremely aggravating.

Exactly this happens to me too when designing with mouse/kb. Whenever the ESC key fails, you have to undo the fairway you just laid, then click the back button using the mouse cursor. Then ESC a couple of times to reach the main menu. Then press ESC twice more. Now, every time I am going to lay down surfaces, before I lay the first one, I check to make sure ESC works to exit the brush menu. There isn't a kb command akin to L1/LB, so backing out to the main menu is all we can do. Sometimes, if I press ESC after I click to lay down the surface, but before GNCD finishes the task (3-5s delay for me), ESC will take me back to the Create context menu, saving me one keystroke. It's something I've been asking about for several months and noted it on the front end dev diary thread on HB forums. Gamepad users have noted they would like to cycle through the surfaces in both directions which is currently not possible either. Hopefully something gets done in this regard soon.
