I do have a question. In Episode 27 you talk about play testing in the wind which is a great tip as I would never have found that by myself. The problem is that the wind selection doesn't seem to be random. I wanted to test my course in a high wind but all I keep getting is the 2mph - 4mph wind despite me repeatedly exiting and returning to the main menu and trying again. Is there any way to encourage a stronger wind through theme, weather or something? It's really annoying that HB haven't provided the means for course designers to select the wind so they can test their course under all the conditions the players might experience. I can't see any reason why they don't provide this. The wind will change in intensity throughout a day, but stay in the same direction in my experience. After day or so it will change a direction.

Thanks for this, I'd like to have a go at designing my local course but the designer is a bit daunting when I've never used it.
Will be watching your videos probably tonight and then I'll have a go over the weekend. (along with some practice on next weeks challenge circuit course!)

What did you do with the trees? Did you autoplant them using the slider, or did you plant them yourself?

What did you do with the trees? Did you autoplant them using the slider, or did you plant them yourself? A mix of both. One of the videos skips and doesn't show me raising the tree slider up. After that I control my tree line via the use of rough/or the clear trees tool.

Thanks for the videos Scampi. I am about to the point where I was to do some of the things discussed in various videos listed above. I watched Scarpacci's video on retaining walls last night because I was having fits getting it to look right and I will check yours out as well. His video commentary is hilarious by the way.

Looking to get deeper into course designing as well as playing.
These tutorials look like a cracking place to start.
Cheers.

One thing that helps too is set you tree level. find holes that make sense. start to build, then remove all trees. This makes it easier to frame the hole, do elevation work and bunkers, then go back re-add the trees, tweak and continue. Because of the object meter, I tend to max out grass to help with planting. Also after the hole is laid out, put rough around the hole, then add back your trees and grass, you get a clean look with only minimal planting left to do.

Thank you for posting! Great job on the videos they are a great reference and will get more enthusiasts to make their own courses.
I have a question regarding course design. When creating a course or designing a hole is their a sequence of events or a certain order in which items should be done. To start creating a course would I make it by the order of your videos ie. Episode 9 Fairway - Episode 10 Greens - Episode 11 Tee Box or is their an order list that can be referred to - ie
1)design your course 2)create fairway 3)create tee box 4)add bunkers 5)create green etc
or does it matter
Thx

There's never a right way or a best way. Most designers say they do greens first and work backwards. Some say they lay out tees waypoints and greens for all 18 holes and then start building stuff. Some finish a hole and move on to the next.
This is my process:
Design the starting plot. Do I want a big hill here and a lake there?
Build one hole. It will probably not end up being Hole 1 when I am done.
I do the landing area first. I decide whether I want to take driver out of the player's hand. I decide if I want the tee shot to be uphill or downhill. I decide how wide to make the landing area. I build a small patch of fairway just accommodate the landing area. I might bring the fairway back towards the tee.
Then I move to the green complex. I build my green. I decide whether I want the fairway to surround my green.
I build my fairway that surrounds or meets the green.
I sculpt my green, thinking about how the approach from my primary landing area will play. Does the approach play easier from one side of the fairway as opposed to the other?
I connect my fairway from the green to the landing area.
I build greenside bunkers
I build the fairway back towards the tees, if I didn't do that beforehand.
I focus on the sculpting of the terrain and get that the way I want.
I add fairway bunkers.
I sculpt.
I playtest.
I resculpt my green based on play-testing.
I playtest.
I sculpt - generally raising one side of the fairway.
I check for flat edges on fairways.
I focus on my tee boxes.
I sculpt the land where the tees will go, grading it so the front tee boxes are lower than the back tee boxes.
I lay down the tee box surfaces.
I flatten the tee boxes.
I remove all unwanted auto-gen plants and trees and rocks.
I do my own planting. I generally plant the first hole so I have "written down" my gardening/planting basic theme. I will add more stuff later. I don't plant every hole this way - just the first hole or key areas of other holes. The rest, I plant last.
I check everything.
I move to hole 2.
After I get a flow going, I try to lay down waypoints for a front 9 and a back 9.
I constantly replay all my holes to make sure my course has a good flow or feel or theme. Hopefully, I've given players a varied challenge throughout the round. I'm designing one course, not 18 holes.

It doesn't matter. You'll find your own method that works for you and in fact you'll vary it up from hole to hole. I tend to do the front part of the fairway first, (extending to the 265 mark or somewhere a little beyond that) then the Green, then connect the two. I do advice holding off on placing your rough until you are absolutely certain that the fairway rolls the way you wanted it to. I typically do Teebox last. Additionally, some people find it easier to place their bunkers first, than bend their fairway around those bunkers. Try many different things. Do what makes most sense to you. Practice. Publish. Be ready to hear tough feedback. Practice. Publish again. Keep getting better.

something I found from Tom Doak that could make a big difference for a lot of designers.... "Probably the best lesson I had was from my faculty advisor, Tom Johnson, who taught me that sometimes it was easier to make a good design solution by thinking in negative space. Most designers imagine a golf hole is all rough, and only put the fairway where they want the golfer to go; I imagine a golf hole is all fairway, and just put bunkers and rough where they will make it more interesting." he has a lot of good stuff : www.renaissancegolf.com/selected_essays/the_best_hazard_in_golf/www.renaissancegolf.com/selected_essays/design_by_eye/
