Major WGR Overhaul
Why the change?
Our previous system was a simplified version of the OWGR. It wasn't as accurate as it could be and an audit of recent results showed that there were areas it could be improved.
What's changed?
Simply put, we now total the WGR points you gain from playing in TGC Tours - we take the top 40 point totals from a pool of 65 events.
Here is how your WGR is now calculated
Each tournament you play will earn you WGR points. Those WGR points are stored in a sliding window of 65 weeks. The first 13 weeks you keep 100% of the points earned. From weeks 14 to 65 there is a decay of 1.92% per week.
Here is an example of how 10 WGR points earned will decay over the course of 65 weeks:
As that 10 point event ages it eventually decreases in value to 0 after 65 weeks
Take the sum
Each week, we take the sum of your top 40 adjusted points. If you scored 10 points for each tournament for 14 weeks, you would have 130 points for your most recent 13 tournaments (13 x 10), plus the 9.808 points from the tournament you played 14 weeks ago for a total of 139.808 points. If you played 65 weeks in a row you'd have every slot filled up with points. The top 40 would then be totaled to make up your WGR rating.
Strength of Field
Strength of Field is factored into the formula that calculates the WGR points awarded for each event.
Ranking Points
We had a good look at how many ranking points were awarded for each tour/flight and came to the conclusion that we were awarding too many points for both the Web.con Tour and Challenge Circuit. We have adjusted those multipliers to better reflect the skills of the tours and to create more separation from each tour. PGA and European tours still remain equals. You will now find a much clearer grouping in the WGR between the tours. It promotes moving up the tours and penalizes sandbagging. To increase the amount of ranking points you can earn (and keep) you should strive to make it up to the highest level possible.
Inactive Players back on WGR list
We are also adding all inactive players back to the main WGR list. They are shown with an X as their tour tile on the WGR standings page. Please keep in mind our previous WGR did not include inactive players - there are a lot of them - so the further down the rankings you are the more inactive players are now ahead of you. The points that they previously earned are decreasing in value each week, so they will drop down the rankings, and other players will overtake them.
Filters on WGR Page
There are now filters to show only active members and who's hot as well. Also filters for top players are each tour are available.
FAQ
Does that mean I'll never be able to catch up to people who started before me?
NO! I could be playing this tour for 10 years, but only the top 40 points from my last 65 tournaments would count. And only my last 13 tournaments would count for their full value.
Why is this better than the other method?
We think this is a clearer method, which handles inactive players and sandbaggers. It captures a player's most recent form, and should make it easier to steadily climb the rankings each week. You'll have to earn your rating, and you'll know exactly where you stand each week. There is also no benefit to not submitting your round, in fact submitting your rounds is the only way to gain points!
This is a retro fix - every event in TGC Tours has been recalculated!
