Blackcomb is my entry into the 2024 National Treasure Design Contest. I selected Canadian great, Stanley Thompson, as my architect. I really enjoyed researching and learning about his life and design style. One thing I found rather interesting is that when he designed for the average investor, looking to just get a course on the map, he always made their budget, however, the course was usually more basic in its design, with future drawings of renovation options to liven it up (one way Thompson ensured he always had work coming down the pike). But when Thompson design for large corporations, he always came in well-over budget, seemingly thinking “they can afford it,” hence the elaborate designs of Banff Springs, Capilano, St. George’s to name a few. He definitely had a signature bunkering style and sculpting with these courses. When I set out to design a course with Stanley Thompson’s design eye in mind, I leaned heavily towards one that would have been funded by a large corporation (as highlighted by the big elaborate bunkers), yet, I pulled ideas from a variety of his large portfolio. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest of Washington State, 30 mins from the border, and have visited and snowboarded on Whistler Blackcomb. Inspired by this geography, I chose this as my setting as I felt it fit the massive mountainous region of British Columbia. One that embodies the beauty of the rugged northwestern outdoors of Canada. Although inspired by the look and feel of Banff, Blackcomb also incorporates many of Thompson’s other course design features. You’ll find traces of Capilano, Cataraqui, Kawartha, St. George’s, Green Acres, Jasper Park, Westmount, and Sleepy Hollow. Thompson wasn’t known for his elaborate greens, more of a rolling waves style. So, you’ll find that there are a lot of helping slopes, but if you miss your spot, you may headed a ways in the wrong direction. Greens are 170 but can be pushed to 186 easily. 3 Manipulated tees that all bring in different challenges.

Hey Mitch. You already know what I think of this beauty. You've set a really high bar here.

You could have incorporated an afro pick coming outta the mountainous logo and beavers are also almost always welcome...but hot damn this looks and plays very nice. Hells to the ya if you've been to the "rugged northwestern outdoors of Canada!" More Stanley and more of this please. It's been long overdue and shoutout to whomever pounded the table for this architect to get in this contest. "With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the True North strong and free." Good on Stanley for being overbudget to the wealthy. The wealthy are oftentimes wealthy because they have short arms and deep pockets. If they want everything on their grocery list, things and time cost money, neither of them grow on trees and this ain't 2 for 1 special week. They are not paying for the "half-an-hour" it takes the contractor to do that, it is the investment of years of training, skills, tools, knowledge and experiences acquired by the contractor to be able to do that... in half-an-hour. If someone wants something smaller, simpler and more affordable, that's great, the workmanship and quality still stays the same for both and all clients are equal and must be accommodated equally, according to their means. i.pinimg.com/736x/76/8f/2d/768f2dfb7018f5dc2fb6f224ad15ce8a.jpg#4 Par 3 was an early moment when doobies are lit and hands of dates are held. Very picturesque with the lake setting and the bunkers benched into the forested hills behind. Loved the bunkering throughout, as I'm a sucker for the Alister style flair. I yanked a drive left on #5 and bounced cartpath, cartpath, smacked a tree trunk, rough. Good times. I got my first ever Alby (a 2) on the #9 par 5 from 222 yards out. Hit a maxed out low 3 iron into the upslope short of the green and rolled up the hill and hit the pin dead center and dropped lol. Trying to figure out how to post a replay for ya. You know more about Lord Stanley than I do but I thought this was really enjoyable with a nice faithful depiction and a fun routing. You may have been north my friend, but you have never been North of The Wall . Thanks for doing this mmallahan I had a great time, I hope you did making it, and I'm looking forward to trying out the other tees and digging into more rounds here. On behalf of the Canadian Government I would like to offer you the following: 1. A pardon for your likely shenanigans during your shreddin' fresh pow days and any hotel damage or traffic infractions you may have understandably inflicted. 2. An honorary 24 hour citizenship. 3. A 21 gun salute from men wearing red blazers and baggy thigh pants, mounted on Moose. 4. One free pet of a wet beaver. 5. First ever Alby? Sounds like a fun shot, would love to see a replay if you work that out. Glad you enjoyed your round! I always enjoy reading your quirky, yet entertaining posts, thanks brother!

"Lord mmallahan would you please step forward? Your fine House has come to our aid. The whole realm is in your debt, none more so than I. For your good service and ingenuity for uniting House Thompson, House Canada and House 2K23...if your family shall ask anything of me, ask, and it shall be yours." Lol...Oh c'mon now, you guys would totally have a house hippo if they were real! No need for a roomba, just let that little guy roam. And Joffrey Baratheon, first of his name, titles, titles...always says it best lol. In all honesty, without fully justifying my opinion yet, upon two glances, I think this compares favorably to Yoho, a course I hold in high regard. Curious to hear others opinions and really looking forward to the more Stanley coming down the pipeline. mattyfromcanada That red pen scribble on Dario's picture the other day had me stitches, good stuff right there.

BLACKCOMB (TOUR) now published - Slightly lengthened, tightened fairways, and tougher greens. Only two tee sets. Still fun, but definitely spicier.
