Took some inspiration for the plot from the site that Kernwood CC sits on, even though it's a Ross course. Raynor inspiration is a little bit of CC of Fairfield and Knollwood, didn't want to get too close to the obvious ones. Went for a distinctly different look between the holes inland and the holes on the water and then hit both looks on each nine. Northeast autumn setting, really happy with how it turned out. Happy Masters Sunday.

Played only 1 round. Course is gangsta. Reminded me a wee bit of Springbrook, definitely a little of Fishers, probably for the obvious reasons, but this felt unique to. Easy to walk and some killer sight lines. Hitting into the sunset a couple times was very nice.
Hole 15: Best hole in the contest. Was that just a Biarritz or something different? Loved the approach hitting over the front bunker to the front pin.
Also the approach to the pin on the double plateau hole (I think, 12 or 13), where my ball went from landing on the high short left plateau, down into the swale, half way up the other plateau, back down into and through the swale to the first plateau half way up, back down in the swale and then slowly rolled to the pin about 2 feet away. Deep breath. That's some nice general relativity right there folks.
This is going to be awesome learning about all these classic architects and their philosophies and seeing peoples take on them.
Very nice course....Petty just cranks out good courses like he butters his toast in the morning...contest is over already lol.

Tee shot is a Sahara (NGLA #2) - heroic carry over bunkers to get a view of the green, otherwise you're blind the further you lay back. 1 - Bottle 2 - Redan 3 - Alps 4 - Hog's Back 5 - Leven 6 - Maiden 7 - Prized Dogleg 8 - Lion's Mouth 9 - Punchbowl 10 - Eden 11 - Long 12 - Knoll 13 - Double Plateau 14 - Short 15 - Sahara/Biarritz 16 - Cape 17 - Road 18 - Home

Petty, I see the file start date on this one was 6 months ago... DISQUALIFIED! All kidding aside, incredibly fast product brother. Looking forward to playing it, it looks amazing, which is only par for your courses

Quick question Petty, is that how Raynor designed his courses, every hole was a template, or are you just combining template holes that he commonly used onto one course?

No, there’s probably some that are, but a lot of his courses had original holes on them. Fishers Island and Shoreacres, for example only have a handful of template holes between them, most of the holes there are originals. They were mainly to ensure you hit every club and played all different types of shots in a single round of golf. I think he probably defaulted to templates on flatter land or in order to use specific land features in the most interesting ways, but if he could get the same shot values on more interesting land then he could replace those templates with original ideas. That’s just me guessing though.

I haven’t done a deep dive myself but I believe all four of his Par 3’s were always templates on every course. Short, Redan and Eden and the fourth would be Maiden or Biarritz. Then he seemed to always have at least 5 templates, usually more. But yes always have a handful of customs. How many customs on a course is probably dictated by the land but I would be curious to see if it’s also by time in career or not.
Ben can probably speak better to it, again this is what I picked up from Fried Egg readings and podcasts haha

I think at this point the only templates I can't definitively spot on most courses (I'm probably wrong lol) are the Alps, Bottle, Home, and unless there isn't an obvious hotel or trainyard to hit over or a creek running across the hole...the Road and Leven as well. Here I thought #17 might have been a Prize Dogleg. I like "The Huntercomb" or at least the version on one of Joe's courses, I think Springbrook. Is there a list of EVERY template out there somewhere to read? And ya I've seen Ben's template series...

Really enjoyed my round here, thought it was very tastefully done and well balanced, while exciting and demanding at the same time. Few courses can hit both marks so well. Most hole templates very easily recognizable but had to check out the 'cheat sheet' above a couple of times!
