S9 - Week 18: Sawgrass Championship

New run, lock and load.

Palmer flight, we meet again. Based on my start this week, I aim to make the stay short. -7, -5 for -12 at half, this is including some very stupid things with tempo happening. When you start the week off with a bogey-eagle combo you know it's gonna be a wicked week! Not much to say other than solid play and some missed chances from close thanks to stupid tough pin spots to putt into but I'll take it for now. That 17th isn't too scary to me yet, I was happy to see the usual pin I'm pretty much always getting in ranked in round 2 for extra good knowledge since that might be the only birdie I get on that hole all week! Sawgrass has historically been pretty tough on me but this season looks to start off pretty good!

I did better than normal and this is only my second tourney I played this year along with Torrey Pines. Nervous bogey out of the gate on 1 then calmed down with a few birdies until I shanked one left into the water on 14 for a double boogie man. Finished with a 70 (-2).

Second round was smoother, 3 birdies and a bogey on 8 for the first half. Got my first eagle of the year on 11, and played smoothly for a 66 (-6) so I'm -8 under total through 2. Been a lot of fun so far.   Nice to see you guys here on the board again, hope everyone enjoys this tourney and the real life one.

In true Bogey Bonocore fashion, I didn't miss one, but TWO back to back putts from less than 3 feet because my balls hit the pin. 🙃

The accidental rage induced button mashing replay at the end is the best.

Managed to put together a great round 3, really took advantage of the par 5s.

Limped home in the last 2 rounds, Even and +1. The dreaded 17th cost me in the 3rd round with 2 balls in the water for a quad and to be honest just played terrible in the final round.
Enjoyed the course as always though.

I'm so glad I got to play this week and of course the course was great, conditions, etc. Did well in round 3, was -6 with a second eagle on 11 but got wet on 16 for a double and finished with a 68. Final round knocked in my longest bunker shot from 31 yards for my only birdie in the first dozen holes. Got a little hot towards the end for a 69. So looks like I may finish t-24 like last year. 70-66-68-69 (-15) Very satisfying week and I should be around for next week too. This week's been... quite the rollercoaster of all things. For me, anyway.

Let's begin by going through my weekend rounds. Round 3 was just... one of those what is going on here kinda round? For every one thing wrong, one thing right was right there. For every one right thing, a wrong one would come around to knock me off. I finished round 3 at a very aptly scored -3. Double bogey on 17th after my initial shot was a little too slow and it paid the price, next was just a hair fast and was left pretty much mid slope. Yikes.

Round 4. Come out like a bat out of hell. Seem to get good proximity for shots, allows me a good look pretty much everywhere. Even if I miss the green. -4 thru 9 holes. Confidence has never been higher. Rocked it by 13th. I hit an absolute beauty to 5 feet, but there's slope. Too much, this looks bad. Miscalculate ever so slightly and push it past, come backer is a much simpler one but somehow lipped out because it was too much on an uphill and I guess I blast it a bit hard for it being slow greens. 16th was almost catastrophic. I get bailed out from bad tempo hitting a tree and getting sent back enough to miss all of them on second shot. I then botch it so hard that I'm in a bunker for shot 4. This pin is awful from there. Hit the absolute most wicked flop I could muster so I could get a shot at stopping it. Putt in for par. 17th thankfully was a bit of an easy choice to go with for clubs. 12 feet into a sick left side breaker going a bit past the hole. Putt of my life made there. 18th almost got birdie but safe enough. -6 for round, -21 finish. With 3 hours and change left, P1 in Palmer, pretty much up to one last guy if I hold. Sitting at T-17, very close to my best ever finish, only by just about.

However, for all that's good... well. I've hinted at streams around the community that something's been up in my life this past week or so without really saying what it was, so here's what happened. I lost someone in my family this week after a battle with heart issues. Someone I knew pretty well. Not immediate family but pretty close to it. First time in my life I truly have to process a loss of a loved one. Not the first time in reality, but first time I actually have realized what's going on instead of the little baby brain I had. The week's been a haze at times, only things seemingly keeping my normality in life right now playing some virtual golf. At least with that I go through a range of different emotions.

Who I lost this week didn't know I was doing things this side of the internet, hell she probably couldn't have cared less about golf. However, seeing I didn't get to see her ever again after COVID struck, I hope this is the best kind of farewell gift I could give.

Rest in peace grandma. I hope to dedicate my very first win of any kind to you this week, and if I fall just short I hope the effort was good enough anyways.
