There are several items that I have unlocked on the free tier of the clubhouse pass, but I can't seem to be able select them to add to my skills and equipment, what am I doing wrong?

If you mean free tier as in you have not got the clubhouse pass then I'm imagining you mean free sleeves of balls.
If so then go to your bag and click the ball.
The top option will take you to where you want.

Thanks, I assumed that if I wanted the item I would need to some how select it. I'm not used to programs that do not have some form of manual. The first time I wanted to buy a shirt, I tried several times before I realized that you had to hold the A button down until a white circle was completed around it.
