I have never moved the aiming marker either. If you do, aren't you committed to using the swing meter (which throws me off)? You don't have to move the marker as the game does it for you, though you have to adjust your tempo for the slower backswing. But if the marker moves towards me (to create a shorter carry), do I still take a full swing or is it a half (partial) swing? I don't use the swing meter so I never know exactly how far I should pull it back. sounds like the marker is helpful in determining the length of the back swing?

You still need the correct partial distance. All marker does is slow down backswing and required tempo it doesn't manipulate your distance.

Yeah, he's using the second option I listed. Changing the CPU suggestion and he gets that a short shot requires slow tempo but he hasn't figured out the other side, the marker at the club's max yardage (35 yds) would have been able to give him a base/formula to work with for differing situations. As long as the club is set for 35 yards and he does a partial, the CPU/swing meter will always expect the same thing. I've been doing this 3rd option and getting perfects half the time and close to perfect the other half. I haven't gotten a "Very fast" reading in the last 6 rounds I've played. The distance of the cursor dictates how fast you're supposed to swing. If he keeps moving the cursor different lengths back, he's gonna have to learn different speeds of swinging the club. To me, using max yardage, I'm always swinging the same speed on any type of bunker shot. It could be 10 feet deep, 20 yards, 40 yards - doesn't matter.

For me, I'll go about 3/4 yardage, then have a couple of practice swishes to get the correct partial % and away I go. It's personal, but I feel full yardage is asking me to be a bit more aggressive than I feel (in my mind) is necessary for that shot... Helps me to hit a better tempo.

If you put the marker at your toes, and put a full backswing on it, it would still go full distance (assuming you hit it perfect). Moving the marker alters the swing tempo / timing / speed required to achieve perfect. Again, let's assume your contact is perfect, you will only generate a different carry / roll distance by shortening your swing.

Something I'd completely forgot about til I found myself in the situation yesterday.
What about those situations where you've got a big dropoff on one side of a green? 20-something yards, but a big elevation change.
Game tried to give me a chip shot and I just laughed, but figured "should I try?" and I think it took me two chips to get back up to the top. Flop shots I don't mind in ideal conditions on a good number, but that is neither even if it may be the best option for many. Pitch shot with the sliders turned all the way? For me, I figure I stand a better shot of making decent contact with that than an extreme finesse flop shot, but distance control is a concern.
Or there's just taking an unplayable and rehitting because I'm going to make a mess of all those is actually a consideration.

I didn't want to make the post any longer but yeah I don't use full on every bunker shot or chip - so if it's really short like a 10 yard bunker shot, I'll set it closer but not all the way to 10 or my swing goes to 'very fast' and I always practice swing - I do a lot of practice swinging anyway. But I'll keep it consistent as much as I can so I'm swinging at a speed I recognize. Also the math can't be done exact since the curve is like 50% backswing -the ball goes like 5 yards but then the max goes 100% - in between can't be calculated by numbers - feel is needed here so these partial shots are working well for the short game and making us think more and it feels like the hazard it should be as someone said earlier.

No problems - it's a very misunderstood feature... Well, it's not explained by the game, so I can see why a lot of people think something is broken with the short game.
