Hoping I can get some feedback on the pitch vs. flop. (NOTE I only ever use the splash from sand and so not considering this option in this thread.)
Previously I avoided the flop but have been experimenting recently with this type of shot in solo casual rounds.
What I find is I can stop the ball on the greens with more ease using a pitch. It seems to pull up a lot quicker.
Is this a fair observation or am I missing something with the flop?
Have tried the flop with increased spin and loft but it rarely stops quicker than a pitch.
Thanks

Yeah, I'd say my experience is fairly similar. I definitely plan for a decent roll out (if there's room in front) when doing a flop shot. Pitch shots I will sometimes *try* to be more precise, but the problem is then I'll completely flub the tempo on half of those shots.

Am wondering when others are then using the flop over a pitch as I certainly find the pitch far more effective and don't seem to have too many issue with distance control. Must be all the practice I've had. I just the "fell" the distance although sometimes take a few practice swings in doubt. Are others using a flop when a higher looping flight is required but only when there's room to allow the roll-out then?

Yeah I get roll out too but I do find if I put it on fully lofted and max spin it pretty much stops on the second bounce, at least with a lob or sand wedge. In this instance I do use it when I don't have much green to work with. I use all different loft and spin settings depending on the situation. Does depend on the club and wind direction a bit, and the slope it's landing on. Sometimes I allow for some roll out and the bloody thing doesn't do it.
Overall though, with my lob wedge pitch going 63m carry and the flop going 41m, it's a useful shot from 38-40m up to 55m using a lower lofted club. I can usually judge the partial pitches at distances shorter than that, but that range I either smash them way over the pin or come up well short.
I have to admit though I'm not sure why there is so much roll out on flop shots, at least with the highest lofted wedges. I use them in real golf at times when I need to get over an obstacle and the majority of times it only rolls a metre or two once it lands, not the several or more it does in this game.

Flop is a pointless and redundant shot in this game. Upto 22/24 yards out as long as there is not great elevation, I use a chip. If there is a bit of elevation say greater than 4ft, then I'd use a pitch (like you, I use the splash only for bunkers).
From over 22/24 yards, it's all about the pitch. The flop has been made harder to execute than it was in TGC2019 which is what we were asking for (the splash is the new TGC2019 flop shot) but as the pitch is so easy to execute as well as getting up high enough, they've made it so the flop is just not needed.
The pitch and splash has been made the go to shots to use in this game hence why the pitch is selected as default up to around 95-100 yards, which to me is silly as I'd just hit a full wedge.
I would have preferred the splash be locked to sand only, the flop to be max 50-55 yards (I mean does anyone flop from further?) and the pitch to be as it is now but a more flatter type shot so the flop was relevant for get up and over stuff when the pin is tight.

The thing is I have watched full on flop shots from Phil from less than 25 yards. Flop is not a high spin shot as the clubface is so wide open and you just cannot produce that friction on the ball, this whole accurate distances in the game club to club from splash and flop is just silly. You are opening up the clubface, you want bounce on the club to pop the ball up in the air. I have seen pro's play the parachute shot (flop) and Rory play a splash out of rough and the ball rolls out considerably from bad lies. Pro's also play pitch shots that come in low and check up quickly and spin back a couple of feet from good lies . Higher ball flight does not always equal more spin than lower loft. One thing that needs fixing is pitch and flop do not roll out enough from heavy rough imo. TBH rough needs fixing on the higher difficulties, difficulty in the game should not be fixed to the swing only. All said and done I love this game on the settings that I play though wedge sand shots and wedge chipping are both still awful.

I went through a phase of trying the flop but found the distance control too hard so have since stashed it away. I generally go for a splash on most occasions as feel confident of little rollout. I pull out the pitch and find the predictable roll gives it a high chance of going in. Unfortunately sometimes I can overhit it and it flies over the pin. I find distance control a bit hard with pitch coming from heavy rough.

Yep there are some things that need improving upon for sure particularly rough lies and the short game. What I will say though is that this exact distances has always been in pretty much every golf game I've played so I don't think we can really hate on HB for that. The hard stop has also been in all games too. This game is by far the best golf game I have played in my entire 20+ years of gaming - that is just on playing golf on a course aka gameplay particularly how we play Hammers. Modes need fixing though.

Modes need fixing though. Agree with everything both you guys have said. Particularly certain short game shots should be much tougher (or not available / react differently from certain lies) and that the rough should give a broader range of distance and be less predictable when it lands. I've always thought instead of such a harsh distance penalty and narrow band - say 65-75% - a better way would for heavy rough to sometimes give you a 85%-110% to account for the fact those guys can often move it pretty far from there but risk a flyer and make predicting the exact distance a little harder. But yeah as Mart says this has never really been the case in golf games. Would be great in the new game if they added something like 'lie impact' under difficulty and you could switch between these sorts of options but I'm sure that's wishful thinking. All that said though, definitely enjoyed my time on the game these year even with all the bumps on the road.

And Blue blood just on the topic at hand (sorry for the tangent):
I only really go for flop if the distance to the hole is perfect for a full shot. Could never ever master partial flops of any kind, personally. If I'm below that distance I'll go for the partial pitch, or often play a kind of long bump and run with anything up to a 7i, especially if it's a lie on the fairway and first bounce will land on the green.

If there isn't anything impeding path to hole I prefer to chip. Anywhere up to 35 yds flat and up to 60 yds downhill 10-15 feet. I also choose the bump and run 15 yarder that sometimes are 10 feet above. I find it fun and challenging to get right. To be honest the 8-10 yarders on pro are stupid easy and it's almost a putt and it's disappointing when I miss one with little break. I use the roll out method when I chip as I would in real golf.

The problem is 8 to 10 yarders are so much easier than putting (I never use grids) and holing out frequently is the norm even on the higher difficulties. The long chipping is ok in this game but the shorter chips are laser accurate, it ruins the short game for me a bit. A chipping mechanic based on the same feel mechanic that we have for putting would be superb.

Its a bit annoying to hit a good shot on to the green leaving a putt only for a less good approach getting chipped in. The better approach should be rewarded. Of course, we all benefit from this at times but it does spoil things.
