Hey
fergdawg , just played this beta - default conditions, W/SW wind at 4-10 mph, black tees, Pin 4.
The sightline off the tee on Hole 2 is a bit odd. The bridge is right in the line of sight, and the chain link fence used as a railing doesn't quite look right to me. The hole itself is basically a 90-degree dogleg left, which is a slight concern. The planting here is a bit jarring - all the trees on the right are the same, and all the trees on the left, while different from the ones on the right, are also the same:
Hole 3, the left side of the green running off steeply into a bunker isn't ideal:
Hole 4, I was given a 4-iron off the tee on a 328-yard par-4 that aimed straight down a small bit of fairway. Clubbed up to driver, and there's no way I ever consider not going for the green here. The green is small-ish and has slope, but there's pretty much no danger if I miss it. I did like the fairway around the green that would catch any shot that rolled off the surface.
The green complex on Hole 6 is shaped in a way that will likely require folks who play it to chip or pitch on the green, due to the fact the bunker cuts into the green quite a bit:
Hole 8 is a 625-yard par-5 with three distinct split sections. The section on the right ends at 330 yards, so going there with driver is a gamble as the tee shot is downhill. The left section gives you a better angle and a shorter approach anyway, so I went over there. Still had 303 left to the hole on my second. The second shot is blind, and the layup zone is small. Laying up would leave me about 140 yards away:
I went for the green in two, and ended up in a flat-ish area of heavy rough on the bank of the river, 60 yards from the green.
Hole 10 is almost exactly the same has Hole 4. It's a 301-yard drivable par-4, where I was given 3-wood off the tee to aim down the fairway that ends 295 yards away from the tee. Again, clubbed up to driver and went for it. There's a bit more danger, as the river is closer, but this is a hole where you'd always go for the green off the tee. I even had 9 mph of breeze into my face and found the putting surface.
The green on Hole 11 has a slope on the right like the one on Hole 3 did on the left. Anything on the right side of the green is ushered down into a bunker:
Hole 13 is another beast of a par-5 into the wind. 590 yards long, and even with a drive of 305, I am left 334 from the pin. Driver off the deck on my second doesn't even reach the layup area across the river. Have to lay up in front of the river, still 140 yards away. And the green on this hole is absolutely massive:
The false front on the Hole 14 green is extreme, IMO. It's a 210 yard, 31-foot uphill par-3, and anything that's on the front 20-25 feet of the green is getting rejected off and sent down a hill that's well below the putting surface:
Hole 15 is another really long par-5 that's not even remotely reachable in two, and I even had the wind helping this time.
Didn't understand why there's a split in the fairway on Hole 16.
Again, Hole 18 is a par-4 where the fairway just stops and is split at about 355 yards from the tee and 117 yards from the hole. But there's no real need for it. I had a 4 mph wind at my back on this hole, and pushed my drive out there over 330 yards. If the wind is higher, driver might be the wrong play, and this is on a 471-yard hole. It just doesn't make sense to me why this is broken up:
The Hole 18 green also has slopes that funnel shots into sand.
In general, the look is not bad, but there is some quirkiness with planting...all the boundary trees are exactly the same. The planting by the river looks solid. I did get some lag that didn't affect shots, but was noticeable, especially near heavily planted spots close to the river. I didn't really care for the bridges with the chain link fences on them, especially when they were viewable right near the tee. They didn't look right to me.
I personally feel the scale of some parts of this course is off. The bunkers and greens are humongous and don't quite look right. It seems to be that you were going for waste areas with the sand, but they just look like really, really big "traditional" hazards. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it just looked a tad strange.
Also, the hole lengths are all pretty demanding (and are all quite similar):
- There are par-3s that are 180, 176, 212, 204, 207, and 207 again.
- There are par-4s that are 475, 462, 510, 450, and 486.
- There are par-5s that are 638, 617, 643, and 640.
The only other holes on this course are the drivable par-4s and a mid-length par-4 that's 431 yards. It could use some more variety in lengths to offer some more interest.
The views and such aren't too bad at all, so that side of things is OK. Perhaps some tweaks here and there, and there wasn't much in the way of unintentional blindness. But honestly, the tree panting, hole design, some green slopes, and the scale of hole lengths and greens/bunkers were the areas of concern here for me.
I really hope this helps, and I do see a lot of good in this course, too. The setting is nice, the planting around the river is really good, and the textures you used are perfect for the look and feel of this course. I think some more attention to those other areas will bring this all together and provide a solid course.
