Yep, it's slow going but I have been working through an older layout that I had put on the shelf to work on contest courses. It started out last year after watching the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, so I set about laying out a course inspired by that location and course. So the routing and layout will be similar, but I ventured off a bit as well. Here are some sculpting pictures (lower light than the course will be). I am slogging through the planting (slooooow going as always) but will hope to release a beta on this one to get feedback before "going final". More to come soon!

Welp, it's starting to look like a course... Looking very cohesive! Love the details with the ruined stone wall, and the view of 10th tee looks great too.

jwtexan Close, good guess! But it's Fidra Island/Lighthouse. The course is inspired by Renaissance Club...

Good morning, beta is up under "ELGC beta" (ELGC stands for East Lothian Golf Club, but I don't think that will be the final name). Feedback, comments, suggestions, and two bit opinions are welcome, have at it! Suggested Settings: Wind: North, medium. - this will have wind coming in off the water. Fairways: Firm, as this is a Highlands course, it defaults to soft even though I set it at .7 Lighting: I went with the neutral look, so Default is overcast and midday. If you change it, you might want to change weather to clear or light cloud or it will be too dark for some Otherwise, feel free to play around crank up wind and greens etc as I think it plays fairly easy. Quick background: As stated above, it’s an inspired by course of the Renaissance Club (Doak) which hosts the Scottish Open. I was watching the Scottish Open is 2020 and realized what a cool spot this was…nestled right in their with the legendary North Berwick and Muirfield is this newer Tom Doak gem. I started the plot last year, but put in on the shelf to work on my Design Contest courses. As I don’t have much bandwidth, I hadn’t touched again until late this fall. The plot is big, definitely could have made it tighter, but I went with what I had done already.

Just played a couple of rounds and it is a fun course!
Maybe have a wee look at one or two of the bunkers & sculpt just a hair more depth - though that may have been the lighting playing tricks on me. Speaking of bunkers, what might help if you want the revetted look is changing the theme to Delta (remember what textures you’re using!) and see how it looks - the land scars more easily when it is sculpted so the bunkers will appear to have more of a wall. It would however change any autogen plants you may have. You can always change it back if you don’t like it.
All in all good work. 👍🏻

Yup agreed, other feedback I have received--more bunkers, and some of them need to be bigger. I did take it easy on the depth of the actual sand since I am cutting the actual ground deep with a hard brush not the soft "fuzzy donut". So they have depth but you are correct, the light doesn't show them off. I made a decision to go with the more neutral lighting. If you look at them in the low light, you will see a big difference. I felt the neutral light made the course pop which was more important than the bunkers. Of course people/schedulers will be able adjust light/weather if they wish, so I let it roll!

Update: Thank you all for the feedback I have received, really all very helpful points. I have updated a few holes, tweaked some greens and fairways and as suggested, added bunkers as well as redoing some existing bunkers. As rock walls are a big part of the real course, I took a stab at including some in key places. I think they came out "just ok" but I felt it important to give it a shot...plus planting a few hundred rocks was oh so much fun lol 15eicheltower9 I am now doing final testing, basically playing at 187 to make sure there is nothing crazy going on at that speed as well as varying the conditions. I hope to have final version out by this weekend. Here are a couple of pics...new and improved second hole, and a sky view looking back on 18 as well as a shot of 9 and 12 (both showing said rock walls)
