I'm new to this game and one thing that absolutely baffles me is when I hit a pitch shot.
120y to pin over water... pitch an 8iron (don't ask me why the game thinks this is a good default option over a full blooded wedge) hit it 98%....SPLASH. 2% OF 120y is a couple yards and change and I'm landing in the water 40y short of the green.
How and why?
I've also noticed that if I hit a 101% pitch from 40y and catch it fast I'm in Arnold Palmers back garden 30y over the green.
What is going on?

Pitch shots are VERY finicky with distance control. Apparently if you choose wedges or clubs that have the highest rating of distance control you will get better results, but as a guy that's gone that route I still am baffled by how off it can be on 40 yard shots. It generally seems to do best when you take a 100% pitch shot. I would at all costs stay away from 70-95% pitch shots and just hit a flop or splash where it allows. Flops can still get away from you but never more than a few yards.

I avoid partial pitches* where I can, because I either hit them too long or come up way short. I'll usually use a flop or splash if the distance allows for a full "swing". With flops I usually put max spin on them so they don't run out too far, sometimes I use a percentage less than max spin for a little roll out. A normal one rolls out several metres or more which I find a bit strange for a flop. I hit similar shots in real life from similar distances (40-50 metres) onto firm greens and they usually drop and stop, or just roll out a metre or two at most.
*A full pitch with my lob wedge goes 63 metres. A full splash is 23 metres. If I have short pitches around 18-20 metres I will use a partial pitch with full loft and spin, as I have worked out how hard to hit it to land it close, but the 30, 40, 50 metre ones are all over the shop. If it's close to that 63 metres, or into a strong headwind I can use a full pitch and just adjust loft and spin to get it close.

The % power you hit on your shot is NOT equal to % of carry distance; it is NOT 1:1. For example a 75% shot of a full 120 yard carry club will not go 90 yards. You will need to practice with your partials on the range or chipping green because of this.
The explanation from the devs at launch was that IRL you don't swing 50% to go 50% distance. You probably find you do a 60-70% full swing for that which I understand. Also you have to remember the whole game was developed for everyone to use the distance control meter where you set your intent via the scout cam, which sets the point in the bar to hit and that's your target. Again that was advised as how it was by the devs at launch (all on the HB site).
Sounds harsh saying it but if you want to be able to play without the control meter, you will have to practice your distances (for partials) and get a feel for where you need to swing at for them.

Would love to se a real punch shot implemented. They don't even have one in the game lol. Then when you rig the the shot to fly low the first bounce goes straight up about 30 feet. Piss poor realism there. And it would be nice to get a 3/4 knock down shot also.
