Welcome to week 49 at Peel Castle by biggfelixSome interesting greens and pins greet you this week. Not a lot of wind and not that firm, so should be able to attack.. but its all about fairways and greens this week.

There should be some low scores this week I would think, unless the wind really starts to blow.
Massive fairways so you can go for it off most tees, and as long as the short irons are working (which mine were, for a change) there shouldn't be too many disasters. For a world-weary CC-J player, being able to open with a 65 was quite exciting.

Good god my round was all over the place in rd 1. Opened with a double, 3 straight birds and an ace…followed by 4 straight bogeys 🤦🏻♂️ Finished with 6 birdies in 7 holes for a -5. WTF

Missed so many putts round one. Should have shot 5 or 6 better. Unfortunately feels like that's going to be the difference this week given the size of the fairways.

Good god… 3 rounds here and the number of putts I have had lip out is MINDBLOWING… probably 15 strokes lost, with 7 alone today. Anyway, here is my breakdown.
1. Straight away… all three bunkers are in play depending on how your tempo works thank you. The cliff is far enough to the right that you can steer away from the left bunker and try to crush it. Even if you don’t come away clean it will only leave about 130 140 yards in. Approach Missing left looks safer than the right obviously but will leave a runaway chip back across the down hill sloping green.
2. The grade should prevent anybody from being able to reach the waste with their drive. From there you should be able stick pretty close. Easiest par 4 on course.
3. This hole looks pretty wide-open and screams birdie but good luck trying to get the ball to sit where you want it to. Green sits up 4’, so no real bounce up opportunity for front pins.
4. I can see some low scores happening on this one. The driving zone is a little tight but you can even lay up with a 3W and still get on the green with another 3W. The trouble mound on the left will kick your ball out into the middle. Also if you were really scared of dropping one in the water on the right you can play the opposite fairway and knock a highbred or 3W into the slope on the green and get it to stick and be putting for eagle as well. Noted that the left fairway only gave me 93-96%. The bunker up front is the only thing really pressuring score here.
5. Straight away and I would not even worry about those little sand traps along the way… The hole is short enough that you can blast out with a nine iron or a pitching wedge and shape a shot to be tapping in for birdie.
6. There is definitely some green contouring that you want to take into account when you play your T shot. Each of the terraces are pretty flat so if you hit right you should be able to Birdie.
7. Well the drive is pretty straightforward, with an uphill landing to kill your roll, but the approach into the false front Greene will make you reconsider how you want to run up on it or launch and hope to spin at home.
8. Two attempts, 2 eagles… long and straight to a long iron uphill… ball died 10 feet each time. If you come up short, there is a hidden 10’ dip that will eat up your ball.
9. Not much to strategize here…. As long as you don’t screw up the tempo you should be easily chipping on tapping in for birdie if not leaving yourself a nice eagle putt.
10. Go for it… cut the corner… The green is almost reachable. The worst that will happen is you kick down the hill into the middle of the fairway leave yourself about 140 yards…. If you clear you will leave yourself about a 50 yard pitch shot. And then you’ll randomly decide to flub it three times in a row. Runaway green to the back left.
11. The drop off on the left out there is easily reachable so make sure to shape your shot to the long point on the right. Getting out of that drop is pretty gnarly and will probably take you two shots to get on this large green… And two putting from the far out realms will be a challenge.
12. Big hitters may want to consider a 3W off the tee as the water is easily reachable with a perfect perfect drive… fairway slopes downhill into the left towards the water. If you want to use driver make sure to play at a higher fade and I think will end up carrying out 300 to 350 giving you a crisp little pitch across the water.
13. With so little trouble to deal with off the tee on this course 13 here could be the one that sneaks up on you if you were not locking in tempo. Where are the courses currently killing me is that I am not hitting the greens and my pitching certainly sucks because I think my controller batteries are near dead.
14. This one is a bit of a poke off the tee. Don’t be afraid to club up and loft it a little bit more to get it to settle.
15. Similar to 13 this is definitely a bit of a gut check… absolutely no bail out space on the right so be careful judging the wind and picking your landing zone. Green is freaking huge with a big ridge that will keep you from rolling up onto the back tier so don’t be afraid to rip it as hard as you can on the uphill approach.
16. Not majorly appeal but also the difference between playing 3W and driver off this Tee will not be that significant. Get to your best approach distance and let that make your decision.
17. Slopes between the tiers on the green will run away any wayward shots so make sure you play tight to your landing area. You can leave yourself 50 to 100‘ across many breaks if you are not careful.
18. Despite the length of this can be a pretty good eagle opportunity if you understand the areas short of the green. A good drive will leave you about 250 to 260, but a run up shot will be subject to hitting possibly the side of the Teebox or some of the other hills on the way down to the putting surface therefore you do want to loft it up pretty high and hope to hit just short rather than letting the other surfaces 20 to 30 yards short ruin a perfectly good strike.
So it really looks like you need to be in the mid 60s to be scoring here. I played 70 each round on Saturday, and would have again today had I not dropped my tee shot on 15 in the drink and had to re-hit. Missed a couple easy putts and absolutely crapped on a couple easy short irons and pitches that should’ve got me better scoring opportunities. I think the funny part is that I had almost identical statistics each round scoring 85% fairways and 61% greens identical driving distance and proximity to the hole.
For all the people complaining about the difficulty of the last couple courses this one should rate as one of the easiest that we’ve played this year. I didn’t play pins for days 3 & 4, so those could ratchet up the difficulty.

Just an absolute cluster@!$# . My oh my how one bad hole can totally kill you !!!!!!!! . Nice and steady 69 in first round and cruising up to Minus 7 by Hole 11 round 2 , 130 yards out , perfect yardage to front pin . Mini pull and i mean mini pull and into what i can only describe as an abyss . This is not a bunker , this is a quarry and over 20 feet deep . 5 shots later and posting a 9 . The controller did not get thrown , but my mind was gone and so was my cut streak. Goddamit. !!!!! My own fault , so the momentum i wanted into Tour Champs has been well and truly sh%$ on from a great depth !!!!!!!!!!!

I ended up down there too but just decided to do a full LW pitch out, two-putt and take my bogey. Sitting T2 in CC-I at the moment at -13. Really like the strategy at times on this course, do not like the sculpting and drop offs as much. But overlooking that, the course plays great. There's multiple ways to birdie most holes and I like that.

Finished up early because I have a little getaway this weekend. Really REALLY happy with the results this week after the M/C last week. One Humph for the week, on the 61st hole. Might be my best career finish.

Agree about the course , lots of chances to shine and i am sure had i taken my medicine i would have done the same .

Loads of tempo issues first 2 rounds for +4 and +2. Then great tempo 3rd round for -10 and 4th round -6.
The difference in scoring was chalk and cheese. Was it me or was it the game.
I dont know anymore.

A very steady lineup for me this week. -5, -6, -5, -6. Played my best when there was a bit of green speed and some wind. Go figure.
Got kind of lucky this week, I made the cut by being a whopping 0,2 people above the 60% mark (yes, I calculated that one right before the deadline). Had a few of those calls go the other way this season and never really saw the positive side until now. So, good time to get a bit of luck in so I can get consecutive made cuts.
One more week to go, good luck in your respective tour championship!

Flipping garbage... played 4 practice rounds at E, E, -2, -1. Not a lot of birdies, but no doubles or worse... no 3 putts. Transitioned straight from the 4th practice round and tempo was awful... not sure what the hell happened, but could barely drive the ball 225 with the red fasts. Still was -1 through 3 before the wheels came off with double on 4, double on 8, triple on 14. 12 bunkers hit and 1 water hazard to score +6... 28 putts too. Changed batteries and had actually gotten down to +2 or +3 in R2 before getting a bogey on like 14 and losing momentum down the stretch. Need to do a better job of pulling the plug at the first sign of shenanigans. Looks like more design work this week.
