Three weeks to go in season 7! This week we head to Revelstoke Wine Club by SluggieLoucksA bit of firmness greats you this week... winds shouldn't be much of an issue until later on in the tournament. I heard the vineyards are spectacular this time of year!

This course really tests your patience. All I can say is say is thank god for the practice society, as it took me 5 full rounds to figure this guy out. There are a couple holes that tease the hell out of you, and couple others that demand your absolute best shot to have a chance for par. For those who remember playing The Riverlands several weeks ago, the shot making there is required for about 12 holes, and then the other 6 you have to be on your 101% tempo. Almost every a approach is uphill. This course plays very long.
1. Serious gut check on hole one here. Nothing like getting your round started off with a snowman with a couple of tempo flares in the drink. Highly recommend going out to the range and making sure you got that on point before trying to drive this guy. After a perfect drive I was sitting 225 out and I could not find a way to safely get that thing near the green so I had to lay up…. I think you really have to not be inside 200 or have the pin at the back of the green to have a good shot at Eagle here. Given that a layup will leave you a longish pitch, I can see par being a pretty good score on this hole.
2. This will be an interesting driving hole depending on where the tee sets up. Because the hole lays out way uphill you want to be long off the tee. A well struck approach may trickle up on and give you a shot an eagle but once again this is a difficult hole with lots of potential ways to ruin your score, but should be a birdie if you keep it in the short stuff. Watch for the out of bounds on the right though.
3. Make sure to play the pin position when planning your drive as to whether or not to go left or right around the center bunker. Choosing correctly will take those bunkers out of play. Pin position one in the back left corner I would definitely go right around the bunker which will lay out a medium to short iron that you will have a lot of green depth to work with to control spin and stop. Green is much smaller than it looks as it falls away in pretty much every direction.
4. So my controller batteries died at the end of hole three so I have a fresh set to go screw up here on a short par three. Pin 1 it’s very difficult to go right at but you can certainly deloft a short iron play to the middle and let the green contour roll it pretty close. I seem to live short and right.
5. After back to back par fives to start now you get back to back par threes. This is a monster. While pretty straight away it is way up hill in the green itself is sloped back toward you so anything that does not reach the right tier is going to roll back to the front. The right bunker dives in and will eat anything up that is close to the fringe. I almost recommend using a wood as opposed to an iron or hybrid, And going at it at 90 to 95% just to be able to maintain some forward momentum. Any putt downhill will be challenging and will move a lot so beware with your lag. Your ball should roll back to the front of the green on its own for any front pin placements. DON'T GO LONG OFF THE BACK... chip back is impossibly hard to stop.
6. The drive is a straight grip and rip. Sure some tempo variations could screw you here but they drop it in elevation should carry you over any of the shorts trouble on the right and will put you into a very short wedge into the green. The front bunker can eat you up if you’re not careful.
7. This hole has triple written all over it. Not sure that there is a real good strategy off the Tee other than don’t @!$# up and hit it in the water. Play to your best approach club distance which for me is typically a sand wedge. And you can go full tin cup on your approach here as anything that hits the front of the green with any spin move all back all the way down the hill across the rocks in the water. Definitely leave any big dogs in the bag here.
8. You absolutely have to be in the fairway to have a shot to get into the green in two. Pretty big uphill climb. Front bunkers are nasty and easy to short side yourself on front placements. In the false front will push everything right back down there. My experiences here cater to more adding an extra club and dropping it on the back or just long... short is treacherous.
9. This is a total tease. Everything long is out of bounds, in the target area around the pin is so tight that any spray on your drive is going to be highly risky. You can hit the front of the green with the Three wood which is probably your best option. Green is steep enough to really reduce the number of one putts that you will see here as well.
10. The green is reachable in two. A drive long and left is safe but will force you to go across a lot of water to get up there and it’s not worth it. You probably wanna be over the Sandtrap on the right (no small feat) and out a little over 300 to have your best shot at running it up the rocks on the right and spilling onto the green. See this hole yielding anything from 3 to 9. Green slopes right to left so anything at the right edge will be safe. If you do hit those bunkers on the right make sure you use a club with a little bit of loft to get over the front lip.
11. The landing area for this drive is unreal tight, and seems to require 250-260 carry to be safe. I suppose that you can go way left to the safe zone but not sure that’s going to help you much on your approach. The bunker in front is very steep. Makes for a very tough splash shot to get out anywhere close to the pin.
12. There are Out of bounds stakes on the left so beware. I got lucky over here, parking one outside, but not getting the penalty. Another uphill approach so make sure you take the right length club and play for the correct hemisphere of the green. I side bunker on the right will short side you on a couple of pin positions. Don’t even try to mess around with the splash shot on the 10 yard version just go straight to the pitch.
13. Simple pitching wedge. Pin one is in a pretty precarious location but if you came to the middle left of the green with a little spin it will check up and roll pretty close. 2-3 yards long will trickle off for a deceiving down hill chip back.
14. 538 uphill into the wind? Yeah, @!$# this one. Just try not to make a six or worse.
15. Opportunity if you hit a great drive to get home in two and have an eagle putt… downhill so you should be able to get your drive to roll out between 325 and 350, leaving about 240 or less in. Dicey water situation which may call For you to lay up pitch in and tap home for your birdie though.
16. If you hit that bunker on the right it will leave you 250 on your approach to the green out of sand so yeah that’s not gonna work. If you are hot, yeah try bomb them, but it is uphill and will eat anything not 100% perfect. I started playing the left zone and found pars much easier. Other than that it just lays out is a long pretty straightforward easy par four. Green is sloped right to left so take that into consideration shaping your shots. Took me a few rounds to be able to actually keep my tempo on point to get over the hump and let one roll out 350 yards.
17. Similar to hole 9, but with more bail out space. Driver gives you a really good chance at Eagle if you can get it to check up on the front of the green in roll-on… 3W just right you might be able to get the same results. This is probably one situation where I’d recommend going for it.
18. Another pretty simple par 3 that will play differently depending on whether or not the pins up front or in back. Not a lot of opportunity to make up strokes here.
After I had to change the controller batteries in my first practice round I had two nasty blowups it cost me six shots. Flubbed one shot in the sand trap but other than that played a couple shots over par first round. I believe this course, despite the distance, favors a shot making approach. You are best laying up to a specific distance in the fairway and playing to a specific spot on the green rather than constantly going at it.
Started out +9 in my first 9 holes of practice, then began playing each 9 +1 to +3 over. Just was not finding the birdies to outweigh the rando double or triple lurking. This morning, I finally got everything to click and went +2 warmup, -1, and was -4 before the back nine took my lunch money and I ended up E. The key is to get out and attack those first 5 holes. You can get to -3 or -4 there and that will give you a little flexibility picking your shots down the stretch. It's a hard course that is going to pound us pedestrian players in the lower divisions. Even if you red fasts and slows land "safe" at 250-260, you can still have 250 home on many par fours... or 200+ uphill. The 3 short par 4 are straight up fools gold, so be wary and play for birdies and pars.

Played a couple of practice rounds here and agree with you all , this is a stern test of every club in your bag. Rd1 was a mixed bag of birdies and bogies in CC-H after my first ever Top 10 last week . Even 72 , i cannot complain and always always start off slow . Looking forward to rest !!! great Job @sluggieloucks and for Dan Dan for scheduling another good test !!. Cy

Well I cocked up 17 right proper in round 1, hello Frosty for the round.
Melted most of him in round 2.....does +3 make the cut? Course is a stiff challenge.
Onward.

Not sure if it's a game or course issue, but on the 11th I was in rough on the left and the ball wouldn't go more than a couple of inches. Timing said it was OK (grey) but ball just hopped and sat down again.
Tried declaring unplayable but could only go more back in the rough and same thing.
Eventually hit shot limit and never happened again. No idea what went wrong.

Trickled off the green on 9, and somehow ended up OOB. Proceeded to hit again, hit the green, then took out a driver and drove the ball somewhere in the woods and walked off the course

Trickled off the green on 9, and somehow ended up OOB. This is the only thing I didn't like, otherwise I really enjoyed the course, nice test. My shot ended up about 1-2 yards off the green on 9, really weird for that to be OOB. But I guess it's the same for everyone and I could have checked the yardage book.

Not a course for fastitis. Even trickling into rough leaves you in the 70-75 stuff.

This is a lovely course. Beautifully planted and nicely routed. That 14th is one of the only things keeping this from being an elite course. 538 uphill par 4. I played it into a 10mph wind in my practice round and had a 269-yard approach shot up the hill. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the course. It's too bad because the rest of the course is truly first rate.
