Hey everyone I've been playing TGC for a while now and while I love playing I am looking for some more depth to the game. I want to get into designing. I have very limited experience when it comes to golf course design and strategy.
I see countless books on Amazon but its overwhelming.
Does anybody have a book suggestion for a novice?

I've personally read these two, and found them enjoyable, informative, and easy to read: - Anatomy of a Golf Course - Tom Doak (this is a great option for a "beginner"...this was the first golf architecture book I ever read, and it gave me a ton of insight into the process of creating a golf course, how to strategically design, factors to consider when working on greens, hazards, and more) - Golf Course Architecture in America - George C. Thomas (this one is back from the 1920s and has some parts that are a bit outdated, but it's still an interesting read...Thomas is the designer of Riviera CC, Bel-Air CC, and the North Course at Los Angeles CC, which will host the 2023 US Open) Here's another reference to look for other titles that might be of interest to you: thefriedegg.com/recommended-best-golf-course-architecture-books/

I just finished reading Alister Mackenzie’s book, The Spirit of St. Andrews and couldn’t recommend it more. It was so good and cool and interesting and thought provoking. He talks about so many topics and in a very concise way while also sprinkling in some fun stories too. Highly recommend!
Another good one a friend told me about is Grounds for Golf by Geoff Shackelford. He can be a bit polarizing but I really like listening to him on podcasts so I might seek this one out myself.

I've got the book Grounds of Golf by Geoff Shackelford and it is well worth a look at grovey31. It explains strategies and shows examples of real holes with diagrams and explains in great detail their strategies

Das Kapital. The Communist Manifesto. Imperialism: the highest stage of capitalism. Another view of Stalin.
All great reads.
