So, it sounds like the purpose of your proposal is to only have people playing the last two rounds that are within striking distance to get promo marks. If that is a correct restating of your end goal, why base the cut line on percentages at all?
Begin a bit of a sarcastic voice… Base it on strokes behind the lowest player that is projected to get promo marks at the conclusion of round two. Anyone deemed to “have no chance at a promotion mark” by the all powerful algorithm (formerly a simple percentage) will be unceremoniously eliminated (cut) from contention. The algorithm, henceforth referred to as Al, will perfectly decide who is in and out. With advanced future looking technology (I.e. a DeLorean and flux capacitor) Al will be able to ensure all who aren’t cut won’t be disappointed by the dullness of rounds 3 and 4 as they remain in the mix. They’ll
feel like they have a shot at a green up arrow and it will be an experience to remember. Some weeks, only 17 players might make the cut, but those 17 will receive everything promised by the producers of Al, Rekall.
Back to seriousness…
The way through this requires each person to decide why you play.
If it’s
only to get to Platinum by moving up the CCs and through Kinetic and Elite, then what happens when you get there? You’ll have lost the only motivation to play you’ve had. And, I don’t think saying, “Platinum isn’t my goal” is logical unless your goal isn’t to gain promotion marks at all. For instance, if a CC-D player says they just want to get to CC-B, then they lose their only motivation once there. Or if the same player says their goal isn’t Platinum, but to just make it to Pro (Kinetic) then again once there they lose their motivation.
So, there’s got to be more to it.
I guess I play with the following goals in mind (or for the following reasons maybe).
Overall1. To have fun! Woohoo! And I find the game fun regardless of how I compare to others.
2. Friendly competition (regardless of level)
If not for those two, I wouldn’t play at all. Kinda like real golf.
Long-Term1. Self-improvement (can be measured in many ways)
a. Moving up the tours
b. Improving WGR
c. Improving stats (average score, FIR, GIR, etc…)
d. Money list
2. Gaining friendships and some level of respect in the community
Short-Term1. Win a tournament
2. Top 10 in tourney (or get promo mark)
3. “Feeling” like I played a solid tournament through 4 rounds
4. Making the cut
5. If I miss the cut (and have time to play R3 and R4) I use it for practice/reps
6. To hit that next buttery smooth 7-iron to 3 feet
If the long- or short-term goals/reasons aren’t leading to the overall goals of having fun with friendly competition then maybe a break is needed to rejuvenate. Hey, the pros in real life do it!
