One of my favorite things to do is fly around in google earth and look for plots of land that I could build golf courses on. I've found some awesome plots in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Netherlands, Scotland, Nebraska, Argentina, and on King Island and Tasmania. I'll use the existing landforms that are fairly obvious such as forests or rivers and then imagine what other interesting landforms there could be. It could be sand dunes, high ridges, ravines, or even just simply the general slope of the land. Once those are identified, I start routing. I use the paint 3D app on my laptop so it's nothing fancy and I don't even do it to scale. It's really just a for fun exercise to see if I can come up with a an interesting routing that incorporates the cool landforms that either exist or pretend to exist. Not only is it fun but it's helped me numerous times to get a project up and running in the early stages.
If I come up with an interesting routing on an interesting plot, I then start to determine how to incorporate it into the designer. Figuring out what theme to use is first. It's usually based on the geographic location but you also need to determine the textures options. Laying down the routing first usually works best for me and using the measure tool to figure out the scale and if the holes fit. On my paint 3D app, I use blue, yellow, and red lines to specify the pars or lengths of the holes. Since the routing I did on the computer isn't to scale, I always need to make tweaks and adjustments. After getting the routing to fit, I then I build the landforms off of that. Since I made them up originally, I can make them up as I go too haha. Once that is done (which is usually a ton of fun), I'm ready to start conceptualizing the actual holes themselves.
The point of this thread isn't so much as a "look what I do/do what I do" but more of a general discussion. I have been stuck recently with designing so I wanted to get back to what I was doing when I was having fun and designing strong courses. I have used this method on Windstone and Lambeth Walk and those were so much fun to build. I also wanted to post a few photos of some plots I am considering working on now or in the future along with some plots that look amazing but that I haven't routed yet. I also want other designers to see them and steal them if they want! Use any of them you want, even the ones I have already routed! I obviously don't own them so I think it could be cool to see someone else use the plot or routing and come up with something awesome. On the flip side, if you are struggling like me, maybe one of these can be the kickstart you needed! I am not an expert on golf courses, routing, plots, the designer, etc. but I love all of those things and I just thought this could be a fun topic of discussion if nothing else. In my post below there are four plots that I've routed and really like. The post below that are a few plots that I think look really awesome but that I haven't routed yet. It would be awesome to hear what everyone thinks about them and if they are interested in using one or two for an upcoming project. OR if they chose one and route it, post it here so us GCA nerds can see it. Good vibes!
