Welcome to week 39 at Vermilion Glade by berldoShould be a fun week... things are a bit on the firmer side, but nothing I think you guys can't handle! Lots of slope, but greens are slower this week. Those who have their tempo should score well this week. Good Luck!

Very nice course, hole 7 is the only one that requires praying to the Tempo gods.

Vermillion Glade
Through the TGC practice site
This has been great. I do like the ability to put some numbers up to find that, especially on Xbox, there is some major “ebb and flow” to the swing mechanics. No joke, there are 9-18 hole stretches where I am LOCKED IN with nary a red in sight. Then I get up to take call, crap, etc, and come back a few hours later and have no feel for the shot. And I think at this point, 75% is mental. I take plenty of perfect practice swings… crazy that the first is always perfect, and once the ball is down, slow, fast, whatever.
After getting roughed up the last two rounds at the Riverlands, and getting thoroughly worked in Open qualifying, it was nice to get onto a scoreable course. I think we will see some low scores in the first two rounds. Only three or four holes that can blow up the score and a dozen that are birdie holes if you stay on the short stuff. My pet peeve the last three tourney (Sunset Field, Ekelin, Riverlands) was the number of holes that a decent, but slightly mishit ball would be in the fairway or short stuff and leave 200+ on approach, making par a good score, and really putting pressure on the short game. It was on me, though, when on the “opportunity holes” after a good drive I would flub a wedge short into the trap.
1. The tall trees on the west frame the fairway very tight so you may be best served laying up with a hybrid or long iron. The bunker to the front right guards the green pretty close but if you have slipped it out they’re far enough you should be approaching with a sand wedge or lobber and be able to stick the landing. 2. The front edge is pretty steep so you will want to make sure you get plenty of air to carry the front. The break around pin one is a little bit more challenging than it appears. 3. This hole is much tighter than it looks as the water definitely infringes on any rough left of the fairway in the woods are dense enough to the right to eat up anything wayward. A good drive will leave you a long iron or a hybrid for a tight approach, but your score here should end up ending in an E. 4. Downhill part three that will play very short even with the pin at the back. Bunker on the left might save you from going in the water what is a tough out… make sure you hit it clean and put it back from wherever it dies. 5. A well struck driver here will catch the down slope and roll out quite a ways. A slight misfit or a Three wood will put you at the top of the hill next to the sand trap and leave a long iron down the hill and also bring in the front bunker. Rolling down to the front edge of the green it’s not that bad spot. 6. The creek and Hazard area on the right will make this a daunting drive. From what I could tell the better hitters could probably get here going Three wood/Three wood. If you do try to get there in two, you definitely want to play for the correct section of the green. And I had a putt that had to go uphill 60 inches… for pin one it is better to be deep than to try to glide up with a hybrid. Lots of three putt opportunities out here if you are not careful. 7. I was just about to say this course ain’t too tough… until I got to this one. Forced carry will scare the crap out of anyone who is having tempo issues. I actually considered aiming at the grandstand across the fairway to the right to take all the trouble out of the equation. Nutted a 290 our driver straight into the bunker which I guess is the best of all the evils. The approach wall downhill is into a pretty tight rolling green with lots of false edges and oh don’t forget all that water behind it. Found a little secret for your pin location on the right. The ridge in the middle will push the ball down there so play a lot the club and do it and just let the hill take it down to the pin. Par here is actually a pretty good score. 8. A shapely draw here will take the bunker out of play and catch the sign hill in the way nice approach position. Even with the pin out to the left it helps to aim at the back right bunker in shape your shot in accordingly… stay away from everything left 9. I would not recommend trying to be a hero on this one. The taller trees guard against the direct attack and even shaping a shot brings in a 50-50 chance of the bunker or the heavy rough which will make hitting the green harder than from the top of the hill in the fairway. This is an easy birdie so don’t go giving away a stroke that you don’t have to just because you smell an eagle. I actually cannot believe the number of times that I bogeyed this stupid hole. 10. A lot of space for a safety shot though you can certainly try to get closer to the pin on the right side if you happen to push one out over 300 in the fairway. From the light rough I was able to finesse a five iron from 190 from the left side over by the canopies and let it roll into the middle of the green for a nice easy putt. 11. The bunker dead center of the fairway will encourage you to try to punch one long here. It will certainly put you in a good position for a run on shot in Tap in for eagle. The kidney bean shaped bunker in front of the green will eat a few balls but should be playable. 12. I clubbed down two for the downhill approach and sure enough hit a red fast into the front bunker. Great save though 13. It will be very tempting to go for the top-tier of the fairway… and I hit perfect tempo but I let off at 94% and got totally eaten up by the bunker. Fairway is pretty open to advance your iron or hybrid into pitch position. The wind and firmness of the fairway will really dictate how this is played. 14. Just like nine this one smells like a drivable green. I felt like I played perfectly around the front bunker and somehow ended up directly in the front bunker. Green is very yellow so you don’t want to mess around with long putts. Best path to birdie is probably Three wood and then about a 45 yard pitch. I have felt that I’ve had a number of unfair results from good shots but in the first round here I hit an 85 yard lob wedge and stuck it about 6 feet from the pin only to get about 75 feet of backspin on it to the front of the green. Never seen anything quite like that. My putt back up the hill had to go up 5 feet, in addition to the 70 feet of distance it has to cover. Like 9, I cannot believe the number of times that I have bogeyed this piece of crap. 15. You have to hit the ball about 280 yards downhill so beware even when checking up with your Three wood here. Not sure that there is any way to really cut the corner or to shorten your approach from the 105 to 120 yard range. Easy enough to stick a wedge from there. Caught a massive phantom break here that cost me a birdie on the green. 16. I aargh played the tee shot perfectly, 7-iron with a little fade in stuck at the 7 feet and miss the Tap in. Still having trouble with the slight breaks. 17. The bunker on the right will try to eat up your ball if you’re not careful cutting the corner. Ended up with a funny side he’ll lie and didn’t receive the lie penalty I expected to an ended up hitting the ball way far right of the green next to the grandstands. Not a difficult chip or pitch from back there but definitely one that I would recommend avoiding 18. Pretty easy driving hole with a little fade. Just don’t overpower it as the reward isn’t worth it. Straight on 300 yard drive will leave about 100 to the pin and take those tweener pitches out of the equation.
All in all the greens helped pretty well in the first round only once or twice that I feel like I wasn’t getting a really good read on the putts so I feel like I should’ve made about three or four more. After going E first round, I played a much poorer driving game and came away +7. I tried to drive both short par 4s and was rewarded +1 there, so that was some of the swing. Also had two chips not make it up the false front and roll back to me. I think by game time, this should be -4/-2. Itching to play the last two practice rounds, but may wait till Sunday to get the best feel for the course and work on other TGC things.
Hardest adjustment I am making now is tempo on “short shots” that are not the pitch. So pitching has been the bane of our game for awhile but some time post-patch, I got it… no idea how, no idea how to describe it. However, with my clubs, the shortest splash is 22, so when playing the 10-15 yarders with an 80% lie penalty, the instinct is to bring your target into about 14-16 yards depending on green and hitting a 60% splash… that no longer works. The tempo pace is sooooo sloooow, and if you come through red, you chunk into the wall of the bunker…. just like in real life. The realism is that you just have to play 90% shot, lots of loft/spin, and hope you keep it 10-20 feet past the hole. Bunkers are true penalties now.
One other thing that I have noticed in my actual tournament round so far… I am getting a tremendous amount of roll back on my wedge shots. Usually even with a fair amount of backspin I won’t bring it back much past the original landing spot. This morning I’ve had at least four shots that I brought back at least 20 feet beyond the original landing spot. It has easily cost me four shots.

Even and -2 for -2 at the cut. Played well, wasted lots of opportunities. Managed to go from +2 to -2 in the last 6 holes of rd 2 so I'm happy.

First round -8, second round -10, third round -5. It felt like a new game today, hardly had any issues with the tempo at all, just one shot in the third round that was a red slow even though I slammed the stick forward. It's a much more enjoyable game when you can find the groove and know the bad shots are all your own doing.
CCA. Might end up with another promo mark if I can have a great final round whenever I get to it.

Beautiful course, sucker for the autumn look. plays well and fun.
I had a good tempo day for round 1, but I can see where this course would be daunting if tempo was off.

I played like a bag of ding-dongs and will not be making the cut. Was on cruise control for the first 13/14 holes, tempo on drives was great, approaches were acceptable, but then missed 3 putts under 7 feet to go from -1 to +2. Should have walked away and run another practice round, recalibrated, etc, and come back when my head was in it. Instead, forged on, hitting the water on 6, fighting tempo confidence, and felt like I had a pretty good shot to make the cut at +4 overall, but had a bunker meltdown on 16 with Pin Two (PLAY to the middle of the green... I hit a perfect/perfect approach the wind pushed ever so slightly, hit the fringe and trickled in) and with a 10 yard bunker shot, I stupidly tried to play a 65% shot and flubbed it twice before blasting across the green to chase a triple and my way clear out of the the tournament. Every shot counts.
Not ready to take some time off yet, but so frustrating to have two "good" rounds end up totaling +8... but that's golf.

I struggle with the explosive mistakes myself. This week I'll probably make the cut on the TST, but I made a couple huge mistakes with water in rd 3 and shot 83 and 98 in round 4! Woops, that was within 30mins of finishing this tourney at -5. Don't think too much into it and remember to protect the score you got! Water makes my knees shake and my eyes water.

79-72 in the first two rounds to leave me at +7 in CC-G. I've really been struggling for tempo the last 3 weeks since getting promoted, particularly off the tee which is killing me. My fairways % was 33% in my first round.
I shouldn't make the cut this week unless everyone goes mad. I am just hoping that my Even second round saves me from any demo marks as I am already carrying over one.

-9 final round to go -32 for the week. Came home strong with a -7 back 9. Was enjoyable this week, felt like I was in the tempo groove the whole tournament.

Enjoyed the week, lovely course and fair conditions for our standard. Won’t miss standing on the 7th tee!! I’d be surprised if the 7th isn’t the hardest hole on the course by at least a full shot by the end of the week.

Is the cut line different this week? Looks the same in CC-G with the top 60% making the cut. I haven't seen anything communicated either so I am quite certain it remains the same. What makes you say that ?

What makes you say that ? Ok. That makes sense now. I was looking at the leaderboards yesterday and it looked like the cut lines were right at 40th position. I thought maybe it was a special event or something. But now that more players have posted scores, I see the lines have moved. Must have been a quirky thing were I caught some of the CC societies with approximately the same number of participants making it look like the cut line was top 40 ish. All's good. Unfortunately, I'll still miss the cut regardless. Lol
