Welcome to Bungalow Beach Club, my entry into the National Treasure design contest. I was assigned the country of Maldives from the mighty and all knowing wheel (all hail!). There are no 18 hole full par golf courses in the Maldives, and about the only thing they are famous for is having the most over water bungalow villas in the world and being a popular vacation spot for couples. So, at first I questioned the wise wheel. But, once I embraced the idea behind the contest overall, to get outside your comfort zone, the ideas really started flowing. That is when I landed on the idea of bringing a Pete Dye styled course to the Maldives. Dye is great at creating interest, strategy and challenge out of relatively flat pieces of land with angles, visual deception and making what little land movement is available count. Since the Maldives is the lowest country in the world with the highest elevation point in the entire country being 16.7 feet (on a tee box of the only course in the entire country)... I thought it was a good fit of style to emulate. I had a lot of fun once I actually got going. And I think this contest produced exactly what it was suppose to out of me, which is a course I would have probably never tried to make on my own if not given these set of perimeters. Judges: Prevailing winds to be played are south, southeast or southwest. Default wind speeds have fallen between medium and high in my play testing. I think medium plays best. Default green speed is 175. Enjoy!

Dammit, can't believe I have to wait until tomorrow morning to play this. Looks stunning, Wes, can't wait to have a round.

Loved it loved it loved it. When you first posted you were doing a Dye course this immediately kept to the top of my anticipated drops and this did not disappoint. As we discussed I’m doing something kind of similar on my CC course so I will definitely play this a few times to see how you accomplished something’s. The environment is absolutely nailed as well here.

Loved it! Awesome sculpting and some of those greens were really bold. Captured the environment perfectly, too. Stunning track, Wes! Makes me want to do a Pete Dye course on the project after CC, haha. The thing I really, really loved was that the course never felt boring despite your plot elevation constraints - nailed the Dye ideas and I just had a blast playing it.

Really well done. When I saw relatively flat, I thought, ugh this is gonna be dull. And it was anything but. The hole designs, environment and sight lines kept my interest the whole round. It’s also deceptively tricky, with angles playing much more into approaches and positioning than it looks. Loved every minute of the rounds I played.

You hit the nail on the head with this one, Wes. Perfect style for this setting. The bunkering looked great and was well thought out. Loads of strategy here. Good luck!

This felt like it was out of your comfort zone, but you crushed the execution. I really feel like you did a great job of shifting attention to the small details, and let those accumulate to become an all around solid publish. There were moments where it felt like a b101 course, and that's close to the highest praise I could give you bro. The clubhouse was #dope as well. Solid entry man! Good luck in the contest.

Played this again today and shot worse than my first round - because I was enamored with all your off course work. The clubhouse and Maldives flag were next level stuff my man. Shipping containers for steps? You pulled it off and absolutely nailed the environment. I'm a sucker for golden age of golf course architecture after my visit to the Charleston Muni. The Pete Dye inspiration was really cool to play in a tropical location.
Again my man, great work!

Thank you everyone for the plays and comments so far. I did not have a lot of confidence going into this project because I had never thought to take on something like this, but am coming out with a lot of new tools in the arsenal. I wouldn't wish flat bottom bunkers on my worst enemy because of the time it takes to get them as close to reality as you can thanks to HB's bunker math, but if you are going to go for them, checking out b101 's tutorials on pot bunkers and how he did the South Yarra bunker walls is a great place to start. Honestly, after watching these, and playing around in the designer enough, I came away with a hybrid version of them both on how I would move forward with the Maldives. Many of the green sites were carved into the bunkers using the last brush on the last page (5/5), bottom right, a slightly curved fuzzy brush that tilts the land towards one side really well, especially when using advanced edit. It led to some fun greens and fairways with the slight curve adding a lot to the look in different spots. Personally, I think these might be my favorite set of par 3s I've ever made thanks to these new skills and the unique Dye style. I hope everyone who is on the fence in the future about joining a contest like this one with restrictions, or just joining a contest period, believes me when I say that it is worth it to get outside of your comfort zone.
