Welcome to my WIP thread... Here's what I have lined up for this kick off post:
1. 2. 3.
Yup... A whole lotta not much... I suppose that isn't fair... I have a few thing... 1. I am using the delta theme and doing a coastal lowlands dune kinda thing (I know, its cliché, but f**k it) 2. Two nine hole loops playing out to the coast and back 3. What elements...? I dunno maybe these, maybe others...
At least one driveable par 4
At least one par 3 greater than 230 yards
At least one par 3 shorter than 125 yards At least one template hole of your choice
At least one blind tee shot
At least five par 5 holes (*NOTE* - currently routed for 4 par 5s, but lots of room to monkey with stuff still) At least two holes with a center-line hazard (tree, bunker, etc)
"Do I have pics", I can hear you griping already. I could, but I don't. I'm going to surface the 18 holes, get the more major land movements where I want them... Then I'll look at putting up a few pics. "Well then what is your inspiration?!" - ugh good question... So... Dunes lowland
Sand Valley Tara Iti SandHills Ballyneal Streamsong Many others... (nothing huge to live up to in this list is there?!)
Shoot I'm in a stacked group... might as well swing for the fences no?

*DISCLAIMER* All holes subject to change (as if it actually has to be said! ) I've decided to lay down the tentative surfaces for all the holes before I get too deeply into each specific hole. Everything I have laid down I've tentatively sculpted and tried to get *close* to what I think I want it to be. So far that is 4 holes laid down (1, 2, 3, and 8). I've done a little bit of test planting. None of it will stay, but it at least gives me a sense of what I might actually do... I hate posting WIP pics but here goes nothing... Hole 1 - Pretty easy opener, wide landing area, w/ a wedge in. Miss the green and you'll find one of the collection area short : Hole 2 - Middling Par 3 (165ish currently). The downhill tee shot adds a bit of guessing to the club selection. Once again, a miss will find a collection area below the surface leading to some interesting pitches back up. (Looking back at the first green) 3rd Hole - By no means a long hole, w/ driver expect now more than 9i in, a lay-up might leave a 7i to a large forgiving green. An aggressive tee shot directly at the bunker left will yield a view of the green. A safe lay-up or bail out to the right will leave a blind approach into this naturally punchbowled green. Hole 8 - A vast stretch of fairway connects the 1st, 9th, and 8th holes leaving a large wide open tee shot to the right. While safe your second will be over a greenside bunker to a narrower green sloping slightly away from you. Challenge the left half of the fairway for a long, deep green w/ no hazard to carry on your second. This push-up style green will fall off to collection areas on all sides. That's all I have so far. I think planting will really make this course pop.... So far I'm not hating what I have.... So... Far...

Rebuilt Hole 8, narrowing the preferred landing area significantly. Surfaced Hole 4. Played with a lot of planting. Hated all of it. Used a new approach on the waste bunkers. I like this look better I think.... Ignore the goofy fairway ending at the far right. That will be surfaced when I get to hole 9....

Might work on this today... Might not... Most my time has been testing and ripping up planting... We'll see if I can be bothered to post anything pics related 🤣

I'm so manic on this... On the absolute edge of trashing this. Go from loving to hating and back every time I look at it...

Working hard on figuring out what the resurface of each hole should look like... Here's a hole 2 Before and After... (NOTE:: The after is very much playing around with some looks... Not really a huge fan of the repeated shapes left, but need to see what things look like....) Before: After:

I wish I had the ability to erase and start over my work. I’ve only blown a hole up a few times in my design career. Usually I tweak and tweak until I don’t hate my hole anymore

I wish I had the ability to erase and start over my work. I’ve only blown a hole up a few times in my design career. Usually I tweak and tweak until I don’t hate my hole anymore I had a lot of things nagging at me around the original surfacing... The waste areas, the bunker edges, where tee boxes needed to be, general macro-sculpting, etc... I thought on it for several days and it just seemed easier to keep what I really liked (generally the routing and green complexes) and throw all the rest away.... It seemed like I was constantly fighting a lot of little things (in reality I think all those little things were the symptoms of larger issues). Once I decided to throw most of the work away, I actually felt a lot more liberated to go back and make much more significant changes rather than "is this good enough?" sort of a treat the cause not the symptom scenario... While the resurfacing effort is going quickly, I know I've bitten a lot off with bunkering style... So... We'll see... Time is ticking away!
