Great work on this course. Very much enjoyed my round. Bummed I didnt see a narco's shed somewhere along the course cooking up some of Pablo's exports. Joking....joking. Glad I didnt.
All in all very solid course that was a ton of fun to play and an immersive environment.

I know that plays don’t mean much but 2.3 thousand plays?! That’s crazy! Got the publish deadline tomorrow, looking forward to seeing which alternate courses get in to the main field!

Sadly this did not make it into the main field. Thats okay though, there are a lot of things I still need to improve and fix to get better at designing!

As promised, first thing this morning I loaded up a round in Cuba. Here are my thoughts after a round that I have been looking forward to for a little while now actually.
Instantly I was struck by a visually appealing course. It almost felt like a tropical parkland course, with tree lined holes - just with palms instead of pines! Very good job on creating that consistent and high quality theme throughout the round, really made the course cohesive.
I liked the long sight lines out towards the sea, but I will say that maybe you overused it in the same way a few too many times. 9 and 10 felt like very similar holes, medium length par 4s down the hill towards the ocean. In isolation, the holes were good, but there was a period in the middle of the round that felt very much like we were going up and down the hill, towards and away from the sea with no real variety. Maybe add some variety by looking over a coastal hole out towards the sea, or play towards it at an angle or something. I think it was 10 and 13 that played towards a very similar spot on the coast from a very similar angle - you could have shown off more of the view of further down the coast. I did like how you could see the short par 3 11th hole while playing down 13 though.
Some of the planting was very good. Your tree lines were well done, defining clear boundaries to the holes, and guiding your long sight lines.
I would have liked the short par 4s to be more accessible. The dogleg right across the bay (6 or 7 maybe?) didn’t really feel like I had a chance to cut any of the corner off, so no risk or reward. By enticing a shot at the green or at least further across the corner, you make a very exciting birdie/bogey hole. Perhaps consider match play when you design - how does someone win or lose the hole against an opponent - instead of trying to defend par.
I had a good round. Bogey free -7, including five in a row around the turn. Not the hardest course but an enjoyable day out, and I really had to battle to keep any mistakes off the card with a reasonably tough finish. 18 was definitely reminiscent of plenty of finishing holes on the PGA tour!
Some of the planting was a little questionable. I liked the cityscape in the background of the second green, but it was exposed when the ball was in flight. The buildings sitting on heavy rough texture doesn’t look right, maybe just try adding a street or hiding the base of the buildings with bushes and trees? I know that you were trying to make them look off in the distance and like I say, looked good in the background, just something else to consider.
I know this review has perhaps been a bit critical, but please don’t get the impression that I didn’t enjoy the course! I think with just a little bit of polish, it could be really impressive, and hopefully this pushes you to strive for that extra level. Id be more than happy to discuss some things that I’ve learnt if you want!
To finish on a positive note, my favourite hole on the course was the short par 3 11th. I stuck a wedge to a couple of feet for a birdie, really admired the view, and like I mentioned earlier, LOVED getting a second view of it later in the round. Good job!

I did like how you could see the short par 3 11th hole while playing down 13 though. yeah I really wanted to work on my sightlines and framing on this course and, as you said, it got a little repetitive now and then. I did have some problems with the routing while designing so holes 12 and 13 are a little weird and squished in Some of the planting was very good. It was hole 5 over the bay. I think this was the contender for MOST HATED HOLE ON THE COURSE. I wanted it be to very risk/reward but just didn't execute it very well. It ended up being an easy birdie or an easy quadruple bogey if you hit 3 balls into the ocean I had a good round. Bogey free -7, including five in a row around the turn. Not the hardest course but an enjoyable day out, and I really had to battle to keep any mistakes off the card with a reasonably tough finish. 18 was definitely reminiscent of plenty of finishing holes on the PGA tour! That look into the clubhouse wasn't even considered while making the 18th. I was building the clubhouse after and decided to see how it looked from the 18th tee. When I saw how it looked I was like, "Wow, that dope!"
Yeah the city was just supposed to be in the background, I was hoping people wouldn't go and check it out cause its just some building on a hill. There was also a city that was going to be on the hill alongside the 14th but I ended up scrapping it. No not critical, very good observations and feedback! I's still looking for my first tourworthy so hopefully thats coming soon! I definitely think that my hole designs have room for improvement and i am working hard the make my course more strategic and fun to playTo finish on a positive note, my favourite hole on the course was the short par 3 11th. I stuck a wedge to a couple of feet for a birdie, really admired the view, and like I mentioned earlier, LOVED getting a second view of it later in the round. Good job! Haha a lot of people say that hole 4 is the signature hole but I think that Hole 11 is a little underrated. As always, thanks for the awesome detailed feedback, really means a lot to me Thanks for the play and congrats on the -7 under score!wow boynsy awesome review! just like trailducker I responded below your comments in blue!

Yeah I'm gonna be honest, hole 5 was a bit of a turd compared to the rest. A 120 degree dogleg? Really liked the rest of the course though

Just finished up my round shooting an easy breezy 62 and had a great time. You did a great job of making the planting vibrant but also realistic. The tee shots on 3,4 and 11 were probably my favorite, and the lighting made for a really nice backdrop while putting on 4 (and several of the other greens)
Nice work

Jerry Shields had accepted my request to review this course! He gave me some brief feedback and said that my course had many good design elements and was said that he liked how my course was stunning under all types of lighting.

Really lovely layout and I played it after reading the reviews above so was looking out for a few of them. Additional things I picked up on was the shadowing on greens and tee boxes can some times be distracting depending on the winds. The first is like this with the heavy tree line coming from the other side of the waterfall, not helped because they are also elevated. My personal opinion of the 1st tee wasn't as strong as it could be. There is a long flat mound running a long way to the front of the tee box and if the tee box was lower you'd bring into sight the white tee in front and the garden between the two completing the picture. i.imgur.com/wLuPvrw.jpgYou could drop it down at least feet and get rid the the rock on the left (or lower it) and it would look more like the bottom picture. I like the risk/reward of the 3rd and leaving the waypoint at 3W distance gives the player a decision to make. The 4th is a great little hole looking out to the ocean with that great lighting. Then we come to the 5th. There is very little reward because the fairway was always just out of reach the further right you went with the wind I had. Hitting a red slow into the piss didn't help. Funny that I didn't make the carry except it still gave me a drop on the fairway. (Just a lazy 223 in on this par 4). The shot from the ocean side makes this look like one of the prettiest on the course i.imgur.com/40TFxKP.jpg but it's a shame it loses it's appeal from the tee. I actually liked the 7th even when I slowed into the water. Good reward to be had. I didn't see a lot of the 8th hacking my way through heavy rough all the way up the right side for par. Kick in birdy on the beautiful 11th. Love the 13th being able to hit a big 'ol high hook around the corner. More reward. I felt there were a lot of shots into high set greens, of course that's natural on an elevated course. The 16th was a ripper little par 3 where you have to hit just the right shot to catch the bank. With he 18th being a strong par 4 home with the clubhouse in the background. The clubhouse looks very nicely done i.imgur.com/gC8DfrU.jpg with the large range behind it. Lovely pops of colour around the course lifts it up and gives a very tropical feel. Just the sort of place I could spend a week relaxing.
