Hi All,
I have a question for designers which is...
Q. With the three schools of design in mind, which golf hole that you have designed is your favourite
i) Penal ii) Strategic iii) Heroic

Penal - Hole 2, Horicon Marsh Sport Club. A long par-3 that requires you to carry your tee shot over a long stretch of marsh. While there is a small bailout area to the left of the green, the rest of the putting surface is surrounded by bunkers. Any shot that doesn't go 160 yards from the back tees will end up wet.
Strategic - Hole 7, Cherry Bluffs. This dogleg-right par-4 asks you to make a decision off the tee - cut the corner over the fairway bunker with driver, or play it safe and hit iron or fairway metal off the tee. The former leaves just a wedge into the green if you're successful. The later will leave you with a long iron to a downhill green that has a huge bunker beyond it.
Heroic - Hole 12, Horicon Marsh Sport Club. A cape-style hole, this one begs you to cut off as much of the fairway as you can, forcing you to hit your tee shot over the marsh to do so.

I look forward to your answers I only have two courses to choose from so far but I LOVE this question. Penal: Hole 7 at Quarry Lake. This is arguably the only penal hole on my two courses as I like to provide a lot of options even on par-3's. It's a medium length par-3 over water with a bunker tucked in the front, water left and a bunker long left. There is a miss long right into light rough that can leave a tricky chip depending on the pin location but anything else is wet or sandy. Strategic: Hole 4 at Talaria. This hole is a classic example of a driveable par-4 that isn't exactly an open invitation to just go for it. There are helping slopes on the green to those who can hit the green but it's protected by a bunker left and a creek that runs along the right side of the green with a narrow entry point. The 3-wood option asks the golfer to carry a bunker to make the fairway so it leaves a 3-hybrid as the "go ahead" play for some players which only leaves a full wedge into the green. It makes for some interesting plays and can certainly make or break a round. Heroic: Hole 16 at Talaria. Firstly I'd like to honorably mention hole 9 at Talaria for having my favorite heroic tee shot but hole 16 include two heroic shots. The tee shot can cut the corner of this par-5 to give the golfer an opportunity to hit another heroic shot over a creek to drive the green. There is an option to layup short of the creek but who has time for layups!?
