Week 36 on elite will take us back towards a coastal style course in Coos Golf Grounds by jivesinator. Styled after some famous courses you might find in and around Bandon, Oregon, Coos is a big ballpark with lots of undulation and fun ways to play off the hills and dunes. Green speeds were published at 154, and we didn't go much higher than that for the week of conditions because these greens really don't need any help with speed to be fun. This was one of my personal favorites from the World Cup of Design contest this year and I hope y'all enjoy it as well. I know we are all battling the new swing, but here is hoping that you find that perfect zone more than others this week. Good luck! From the designer: Welcome to the golf grounds! My entry into the WCOD competition is an homage to what has quickly become my favorite course in the world, Pacific Dunes. With a name inspired by the Native American groups that had settled the region that includes the Bandon complex and hole designs that heavily utilize my favorite Bandon features, this and its future sister course will be thrilling virtual destination venues for all who play.

Shot -13 for the event. What an eye opener. Those greens and slopes and firmness were a little excessive. Was -6 at the 36 hole point. So not even sure I made the cut

My first round was 13 pars, 4 birdies and a bogey. Nuff said about this tricky course! Fun!

One of my favourite courses I've played. Love how you don't need to crank up the settings to make this course challenging. Scoring is there but it's also so easy to make a mistake and it cost you at least 1 shot sometimes more.

Interesting course this week. After my horrible showing last week I played a bunch of practice rounds in the past few days. Mostly easy off the tee but some of the greens are TRICKY which is great. Really makes you think where the ball has to land vs just firing at pins. Combined with the mostly unlevel lies in the fairway can make things tough if you're a little off. I'm still trying to get myself to stop being so aggressive with shots into the greens since the penalty for missing is so much higher now with what HB has done to the pitch and splash shots. First 2 rounds I generally was just going for middle of greens and 2 putts for par. Exceptions were par 5's and greens that had slopes to feed the ball toward the hole. Solid play (apart from a dumb 3 putt bogey) got me around in -6 in the first. Was very slow out of the gate in the second and missed 2 chip-ins by a total of under a foot I think to scrape around the front nine in even par. Back nine got my groove back on and managed 3 birdies and an eagle (which was almost an albatross, it hit low on the pin to leave me about a 1ft for the eagle) so -11 through 2 rounds. Good enough to make the cut I think.
I'm still not happy with the splash changes they've made. Not the penalty for fast or slows but for hitting partials. My full lob splash is 22yds and one hole in the second round I left myself, in the fairway, maybe 16 yards to the pin. I hit a splash with 71% power, perfect tempo. . .and the ball went 6 yards. I guess because it shows the 71% power as red when you don't adjust the shot length (which I've never done because it changes the backswing speed and completely throws off my downswing timing). If that was HB's intent then fine, but it's BS to penalize a shot where the only thing "wrong" was not hitting it full power. In real golf you don't change your tempo to alter shot length, you change your swing length.
Complaining done. . .on to rounds 3 and 4 and the American Open qualifying!

We're trunk slamming this week. 65 in the first round, but just couldn't get anything going in the 2nd and ended up 65-69 to finish at -6 and 2 shots off the cut (as I type this). Thought it was a great test and I just didn't have the precision needed in round 2 to get anything out of it. On to next week. Great job as always jwtexan !

And just like that, I’ve been sent down to Kinetic. New swing is killing me and I haven’t really been able to put a lot of time into getting better. It’s good at times, but tough for me to avoid a big number other times. It’s been great the last year and a half to be able to play on the same tour that I co-schedule with Wes. It has always added that I will have to compete on the courses we put out there. Nonetheless…we will keep trying to bring you fun, enjoyable courses with whatever swing HB throws at us. Cheers to guys, good luck next week!
