I am kind of fascinated by the Course Editor in PGA Tour 2K21, and the community that has built up around it here on TGC Tours.
I bought the game because I thought making my own courses would be a lot of fun. It is but wow, it's WAY more work than I was expecting. Still, I persevered with my first course and I was pretty darn happy with it. Had that naive smugness that afflicts cocky ignorant people. (I'm in a creative profession so CLEARLY I was going to be better at this than most people. I wasn't going to rub it in anyone's face or anything, but I was definitely looking forward to the stunned gasps as you folks celebrated my genius.)
As it turns out, I'm either not very good at this or y'all are a bunch of freaks! :-) I mean... come on! Some of the courses you make show so much imagination, and artistic vision, and passion, it just boggles my mind. No one is getting paid for this work so you are making these amazing courses... for fun! That's incredible.
I put so much work into my first course I thought, "That was like passing a kidney stone. I'm not going to be doing THAT again any time soon." And yet some of you just make course after course. Astonishing.
I think part of my problem is that, while I'm very creative, I don't have a good "eye" for things. When I look at a bunch of trees I see a forest. So it's hard for me to know things like... is there just one type of tree in a forest? If there are birch trees in a pine forest... are they just mixed in, or do they tend to appear in patches? How do weeds and grasses grow? What does the edge of a forest stream look like?
All of my artistic insecurities brought back memories of my High School woodworking class. Our project was to make a wooden lamp on the lathe. I spent weeks rounding the wood and adding some tiny ridges around the outside. Was pretty happy with it until I saw some of the other creations. I was inspired to make a meme about it:
I know, I know, I just need to keep working at it and I'll get better, but I'm pretty skeptical about how much I can still improve. At some point I will hit the limit of my abilities and I have a feeling it is going to be far below some of you. :-)
