For my second course I'm trying to think more about shot strategy. What do you think of the fairway and green for this par 4? Two of my pin positions will be on the left side of the green and the other two will be on the right side. So players will need to pay attention to that and choose either the left or right side of the fairway... if they want to hit it close. (That was my idea, anyway.) Does it feel too... obvious? It's not very organic.

It does feel too obvious, I think. I've tried something similar to this and ended up redoing the hole entirely. It didn't work well. Still nice to try stuff out...

Not entirely uncommon, but if it works with the rest of your course, cand is done well ...

It’s alright, but I think bunkers down the middle are useless if the approach is unideal due to the lion’s mouth.

How long is the hole? In order to really effect the decision off the tee, the hole needs to be long enough to make angle of approach matter.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I just took a few minutes on my lunch break to redo the hole. Here's a first pass: For the best approach to the green players will want to hit their drives as close to the bunkers on the left side of the fairway as possible. So there is still some strategy and I think it looks more organic now. Less gimmicky. :-)

"And now, for something completely different"
Actually looks good, keep in mind tall trees that close will limit early/late day lighting options, so look out for that if you're planning dramatic sunset or something.
The split wasn't bad but you described a fairly 'programmed' approach (drive right for right pin) and the options look equal. Maybe narrow one side, but it gets the best angle, or raise one so you can choose approach elevation, even by a few feet ? The particular green shown may not have worked best with that fairway ... looks more suited to a shorter club.
Much like a good margarita, the above should have salt added 👍

Funny you should say that... lots of tall trees is kind of the theme of my course. In fact, my signature hole on the back nine was inspired by this famous fantasy course painting: I set the lighting conditions for the course at the very beginning; that way I can make sure that there are no dark shadows on the greens. If someone changes the time of day... they are going to have a bad time. (I'll be sure to mention this in the course description.)

I have never seen a forest or wooded area with birch trees on one side of the fairway and pine on the other. Doesn't look real to me.

Thanks for the comment, cliffs. The course is mostly fir and pine trees, but I had an area near a small mountain that had some birch trees and I just extended those along the mountain edge. But yeah, it does mean that fairway has one tree type on the left and a different tree type on the right. I thought that made the hole kind of unique but I don't want it to look unrealistic. I'll do some research on this before I publish.

Sun that high tends to wash out colours you will get the bunkers to pop more if you change the lighting and then just tweak and work with the shadows

Back them trees up. The ones to the left from the start of the fairway to the bunkers are fine, all other trees you'll want to move them out.
Great strategic shape to the hole itself. Take on the bunkers for a better angle. The hole itself is good, just let it breathe

Thanks for the great advice, everyone. I appreciate it. :-) Check out "Muir Woods Golf Club" by skinniepost if you wanna see a course that mirrors that fantasy painting of yours. Btw there's a real world mackenzie course called northwood that looks like that too
