I love heavily forested courses so my second project is called Black Forest Golf Club. The basic layout is done, and I've added fairways, greens, and bunkers to the front nine holes. Now I'm starting to put in all my trees and to save on the object meter I'm sinking some large leafy ones into the ground to act as undergrowth. It looks great!
Only one problem. I was testing one of the holes yesterday and I hooked my drive into the forest. It sucked! I couldn't see my golfer, I couldn't see the ball, I couldn't see the fairway. I just smacked it and hoped for the best. Nope, that put me in even deeper. Took me FOUR shots to get out of there. :-(
I guess I could get rid of the undergrowth? (Could have a major negative impact on the visuals.) I also thought about making all the heavily wooded areas out of bounds but that would suck, right?
Any other suggestions?

Can you raise the land a bit in the tree line to give the illusion of density without having to use trees or underbrush?

Sometimes you have to weigh playability vs artistry in this game, definitely.
Also consider how often balls might be hit there ... was yours a 'likely' miss, or something so mishit that the choice of multiple shots to recover vs declare unplayable is deserved ? If only one in a hundred are likely to encounter it, then maybe artistry wins ? If one in twenty, maybe open it up.
I try not to plant TOO densely within a certain range of the playing areas, just because I am constantly in the woods myself and like to be able to escape more often than not 😁
Sure you'll get somewhat better advice from much better designers - or get steered to an appropriate video (hopefully with where in it your topic is covered). Few things worse than being 'stuck' due to crappy game logic.

Move your planting so that it's an appropriate distance from the fairway - 10 yards minimum should do it. Hilariously, Bob, that is covered in the video you still haven't watched

Sounds like your tree line and underbrush might be too close in play. I would just use a few trees with no underbrush if it’s anywhere within 15 yards of fairway or where it might be in play. Then gradually plant the underbrush beyond that and you will get the look you’re looking for.

And I told you a better man would step up !! Any other advice you'd like me to be spot-on about 😜 ? Good luck with getting your course to where you're happy with it !
