Trying to make an effort to play some of these as well a doing my design. Some good early published. Just played chez Dumont National. Extra points need to be given here for the unbelievable retaining wall effort (having seen how good this is I’m promising never to try one again). A really enjoyable play through. Just a pity the lighting didn’t really work on my screen for putting.

A look from the green on the drivable 4 and look off the tee on the par 3. I think I've decided to go bunkerless and make the water in play on just about every hole.

In honour of the red herring #coconut, I'll be including palms in my entry.

Got some work done on #3 short par 4. LOTS of planting to go and some small sculpting around and on the green.

Working on a 2nd plot for the contest. Going to do all the routing, planting, etc on both and see which is a winner....or not. Yes, it's a pretty darn dark course, but it is lighter when actually playing. Plus, don't want to give away any secrets, since the Top 10 from DL 2.1 don't need any help..

Just played chez Dumont National. Extra points need to be given here for the unbelievable retaining wall effort Gentlemen: familiarize yourselves with the judges. Each yard of retaining wall and each vertical foot of waterfall are both worth -5 points. Carry on.

I've given myself a goal in designing: never use a waterfall or a retaining wall on anything I build (clubhouse decks not counting ). If I need to build a creek, I'll use the Doubtfulobelisk trick with the water planes.

Alas, I had started it and went down in a watery grave, but at least I got waterfalls out of my system!

I've given myself a goal in designing: never use a waterfall or a retaining wall on anything I build (clubhouse decks not counting ). If I need to build a creek, I'll use the Doubtfulobelisk trick with the water planes. m That is until Matty gives us a competition where every hole is supposed to have a retaining wall on it I'd disagree with putting "never" in front of any design skill here. What I learned from the past few courses is that it isn't the retaining walls or waterfalls themselves, rather it's the care in designing them. They're tough to create and early on designers, myself included should focus on hole design, sightlines, getting comfortable with the tools, etc. I'm glad I created waterfalls and retaining walls, etc as the care in trying to create them helped with using the brushes, etc. Probably the biggest issue with waterfalls and perhaps even retaining walls is the plant meter hit, that is after the creating of quality ones. Most would say that the benefit of the waterfall/retaining wall isn't worth the hit to the plant meter, at least for early designers. One of the common things that we have to realize is that as new designers and up-and-coming ones, is that many of the judges, folks we see in Dream Team, WCOD, etc have perhaps thousands of hours in the designer. I would guess that since November I've averaged about 6-7 hours per week in just the designer, which means I'm in the 200 hour range. Keep that in mind with the feedback, which has been fantastic. I would actually create a DL contest that requires a certain number of feet of retaining walls or a certain height of waterfalls. Why? Because that's how we get better as designers and creators. Note that we may never, ever actually use it in one of our courses, but having the experience and skills will make us better for it. Heck, I'd love to see contests on bunkerless course, treeless course (bushes only and no higher than 5 feet of planting), par 3 only, and others. At the end of the day, DL and course design in general here is about learning, growing and creating what you want to create. This hasn't been about winning, placing or anything more than getting better as designers. I'd submit that to be true, even in the high end contests. Until there are huge paychecks and prizes this will always be about #FUNANDCASUAL If you've made it this far, then give yourselves a high-5, pat on the back and +1000 points toward your 2.2 design score. I'm loving it and all the creativity and fun. BTW, for some homework, for those who want to see a fun designer who may not win contests and "breaks a lot of the rules", but his courses are a blast? Go play some of SirLeOssi courses, including WCOD-side course Papuwa Muerta and his collab with agrainger12 called Schloss Vernau to start.

I like your thinking on this, virtualgolfer65. I’m getting into the retaining wall racket on my pit hole for this contest—pretty tricky to get this right. I’m impressed to see such smooth, curved lines from others
