I've now got all 18 holes done on my newest course but it feels like it's missing something. After getting my last two courses approved I started off thinking this one would go up a level but would like some help getting it there. It's called CrossersDesertBeta if anyone wants to play and send some advice my way. Thanks

Hey man, apologies but I did not get a chance to play it yet, but will give it a play tonight. Been a busy couple weeks with work and family stuff.

Just finished playing this course so I'll throw in my two cents. I have the same thoughts; feels kind of empty even for a desert/steppe theme. I think you could afford some more planting especially with the water features you have it going and it not looking off for a desert course. Or perhaps get a little more adventurous with the sculpting on and around the course? I also think hole 3 could use a tweak. It was really skinny and didn't mesh well with the wide fairways/large greens on the rest of your course. I didn't see any major sculpting issues and think this is a good start (not that I'm an expert); just not quite there. Not sure how I like having 6 par 5's but perhaps that's just my opinion. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the play and the feedback. Will definitely be doing more planting and will look at some more sculpting between the holes too. And I agree about about hole 3 as well, will make the fairway a little wider in places. Glad there's no major issues with playability though. Not 100% sure what I'll end up doing in terms of different planting but I'll try to figure it out. Thanks again

I gave it a play last night, I agree with a lot of what pizzastrangler said, the course as whole was a little flat and could use some sculpting on the holes, some of the fairways were really smooth so having some undulations in them would be nice, and more variety in the bunkering would help. Planting was sparse, that could be ramped up in areas. I didn't mind having 6 par 5's and 3's but I'll admit it was a little out of the ordinary (not necessarily in a bad way but I did find myself thinking "didn't I already play two 5's on this side?" . I also agree that you could definitely polish this a bit more and it would be a really interesting track. Overall I like the look of the property and the lighting was good, it showed off the theme well. I was only able to give it one play-through last night and I typically like to do at least a couple before I comment so I will give it another go tonight, if anything else comes to mind I will post again!

Thanks again for playing and your feedback too. The lack of fairway undulations will be something I check and will look to improve. Not sure what way to go with the planting other than adding more of the things I've already put in, unless I basically start that again and go for a different look. Didnt realise having 6 holes of each par was seen as something people didnt like, one of my favourite courses I played in real life was a course designed by Seve which has that. Maybe I'll avoid that on my next one. Again thanks for all the help

Gave it another play tonight, here are my thoughts on the second go around: - On the planting, I think it would benefit from some grassy areas and sinking the bushes down a bit. It looked stark with the bushes all at ground level and you can see the trunks. If you look at some of the really great courses from the premier designers they tend to sink the bushes down and vary the size quite a bit, and they tend to group them in patches of grass. The desert has a lot of grasses, it is a good theme to use them. You can also try using the mesquite and juniper trees in this theme. I liked the planting you did between 13 and 14, it would have been nice to see that dense planting around more holes, and with some grasses added.
- On the bunkers, you used a lot of the same small, bean shaped brush and you tended to put them in the same spots, i.e. right at 295, and one or 2 small bunkers near the green. But they all looked really similar. The sculpting in them was decent but there wasn't much variety.
- I liked the playability, the fairways were generous and the greens were big, and the slopes on the greens were good. The greens in general were pretty flat but I did like the slopes you put on them, they were subtle but did make for some challenging putts, especially given some of the putts were pretty long
- All in all I like the course, I think the layout has promise and probably just needs some polish on the planting and some work on the bunkering. Hope this helps, and please keep in mind, I am no expert myself but I have been trying to really ramp up on what the great designers on this forum are doing, hopefully I can give you something useful based on their advice!
- The hole mix, I wouldn't worry about that too much, design what you enjoy, if that means 6 par 5s and par 3s, go for it, I wouldn't presume to tell you how to set par for your course.

That's a lot of really good feed back, I genuinely appreciate it. Will look at those trees you mentioned and will see if I can get those bushes and grasses to look as good as I hope they will. A lot of my bunkers were too small when I first put them in, maybe it's the fact i extended them made them all similar shapes, again something I'll check out. I'm glad theres nothing too major in terms of playability though. Thanks for all the help and I hope I can use it to improve the course to where I want it to be

This is now published as Moapa Valley. The main changes I made from the beta include major planting to make it look less barren, changes to some bunkers and minor sculpting changes. Still not sure I got the overall look I was going for but definitely doesnt look as empty as it did. My next course is already starting to at least look much nicer and I doubt I'll be attempting another desert course any time soon. Thanks to everyone that gave feedback on the beta and I hope the finished product is an improvement
