I started making this course with the idea I was going to make something in the highlands theme. I guess I wanted this to be inspired by the land you see in photos of norther Ireland cliffs and ocean. However, angered I randomized the plot...a lot...and built the first hole (which is a par 3 I have no idea where it will fit in the routing) I’m not sure where this is “inspired by” but I like the looks so I’m going with it. I’m going to build this course with “wavy/bumpy” but slower than max speed greens and no trees. I want this to play sort of like a links course where the ground game is important. To this point my first course and my second (which was my design league entry) have been more target type golf. I am also trying to do a version of pot bunkers but shaggyish. I’m going to try to have much more open fairways and more options for how to play the holes. All that said the first hole is a short par 3. Most all of the ground game options on this hole exist on the green and where you want your ball to land/roll to. Let me know your initial thoughts on this first hole. I just started here because when the plot was randomized this spot to me screamed for a green and a shortish hole fit the land I had in the designer. So far I have no routing or real plan just 1 hole and a piece of land I need to fit 17 more in.

Mate, it looks pretty cool from the photo, atmosphere and sculpting etc. How far set back is that bunker from the green? If it works well aesthetically then that's a good reason to keep it, but if it's as far back as it looks then it's not going to impact on play much at all.
Also I'd rethink the lighthouse. They can be useful as something that you can see from multiple holes, as something to allow you to get your bearings on a course a little easier. But as a stand alone feature it's a little cliched. Your hole stands up well without it from this view. Some more planting will help.

Thanks for the reply! The bunker is in play for the front pins but shouldn’t be for the back. The picture makes it look like it’s further away from the green than it is.
Also, the lighthouse I’m thinking will sort of be the center area of the course where it’s visible like you said from a lot of holes. I may however lose it as you suggest and make that the clubhouse or just a cliff with another golf hole up in that area.

Ok I see that bottom tier to the green now.
Regarding the lighthouse area - this is just my own subjective opinion but my favourite things to see on a golf course are other parts of the golf course. I want to see other holes, the rest of the course, holes I've played or holes I'm yet to play. I think that's much more interesting than some building or fabricated feature.
