I started a new course yesterday and so far the only thing I've done is put in a lake, a creek, and a couple of small waterfalls. So... I've added water, some water effects, a bridge, a clubhouse, and maybe 40 rocks. That's IT. Why on earth is my object meter at 10% already? Yikes!
3/29/21 UPDATE: Wow! It was the waterfall effect. I had maybe 10 of them and every time I removed one my object meter would drop .06%! (From like 5.9% to 5.3%.) The water table didn't seem to be too expensive but I simplified that, too. After the changes my course looks exactly the same but my object meter dropped from nearly 10% to 3.5%.

Because you added all that you mentioned seriously tho, water tables and falls eat up the meter.

Thanks for the confirmation. I guessed that was it, but didn't expect it to be that significant!
My stream wanders so I made lots of water table squares. Would it be better to go with several large ones instead? (I wasn't able to get the water flow working anyway.)
Also, is the water table stuff buggy? I frequently found myself unable to rotate the squares. The only thing that seemed to fix it was pressing "Y" to toggle on the special scaling, and then pressing it again to toggle that off. Kind of annoying.

i personally think the water tables should be able to be splined. water additions are a pain in the ass

Even though your meter was jumping up early on, I would think you'd still be fine in the end to leave those waterfalls and water tables in if you want. You're getting the meter eaters out of the way early and 10 individual waterfalls should be absolutely fine to keep in. As long as you don't go completely crazy with 50+ waterfalls, you should be fine.
A course I made in 2019 had a complex of high falls and splashing effects on the first hole. Probably at least 20 falls in total and in the end I still only used like 80% of the meter when I published
My design philosophy around meter management is to go ahead and do whatever I want and adjust accordingly only if I run into issues down the line. But honestly in 2k21, you have to go really crazy with planting choices to run into meter issues.
