Welcome everyone to March, the month of WCOD craziness. Surprisingly February ended up being a completely stacked with amazing courses and made it really difficult for me to narrow down the courses in this list! For that reason, I'm extending the list this month to 15!
Things of note:
this is purely my subjective opinion, I tend to have a bias towards certain styles of golf courses and I think that will be clear in my rankings. I have a rubric I follow when ranking courses that focuses on these categories: Visuals/Memorability/Strategy/Technical/Fun-Factor with visuals being weighted the LEAST so that's why you might see an arctic fury course ranked underneath a much less beautiful course.
I have not played every course, I also limited this to courses that are Tour Worthy as I didn't have much time to look at others.
If you see a Tour Worthy Course that I missed or skipped over, it's very likely I didn't play it yet!
Please use this list to find some gems that you might've missed!
15. Buffalo Trace by lucheyschoe
This course caught me off-guard when it was released as it seemingly came out of nowhere! This is a new designer and this course is very fun to play and has some lovely course ideas throughout. I fully expect that his next courses will probably blow me away.
14. Cairn Dun by graemevood
Graemevood has released 4 courses! in the last 5ish weeks and this is my favorite of the bunch, he just completely nailed this aesthetic and the course plays great to boot!
13. Yachats Golf Club by straightpogs
This man's first tour worthy course is a solid one with excellent planting and some great fairway movements. This course uses wide fairways well and the course's feel was consistent throughout!
12. The Salt & Sand Club by leveler
after taking a 4 year break from making courses this guy releases an absolute stunner of a course. Some of the best cliffside and dune plantings I've seen are sprinkled around this visually scintillating course
11. La Roque Gageac GC by aeastwood54
Continuing his trend of releasing realistic courses in interesting settings not explored enough yet in this game, another solid release from him with each course being better than the last!
10. 4 Pines Brewing by Heisenberg
channeling his inner mattf and whipping out this wonderful course in short time, Heisenberg continues to be a person to watch. This course features some really nice hopfields and some excellent ground game that makes it rank in the top 10 for me here
9. Pronghorn Run by @rayzor
after making January's list of Lost trail, Rayzor has immediately fired back and released this gorgeous and unique gem of a course with excellent rockwork and eye candy everywhere! This is a big step up from his last course and makes me eager to see what he'll come up with next!
8. Daisy Village Denmark by arcticfury
Wow, you might say, an arctic fury course at 8th place? That's how ridiculous the next couple of courses on this list are. Daisy village absolutely reigns supreme in terms of looks. arctic fury remains close to unrivaled in that department and the legend himself continues to churn out beauty after beauty in only a months time!
7. Tarakoi by praetorghostx
Another course that completely caught me off guard. Praetor is a member of the Barbarian Design Group along with Aeastwood54 of which 2 courses made this list in this month alone! This Tara Iti style roughless course has so many good things going for it I barely have anything nitpicky to say against it. Just an all-rounder and a complete stunner
6. Carnoustie Cove by bennyk315
benny, otherwise known on the forums as our proverbial Tillinghast reincarnate has been one of the most rapidly improving designers I can even think of. From burning bridges to here in a few short months, he has went from being a master of green sculpting to a master of course sculpting. This is a technical masterpiece with an interesting setting and some truly well designed holes.
5. Marquesas Bay by prettygreen1
some of you might recognize this designer as the creator of the course "The Sand Pit" which was a CC course back in 2020. He took a break and now he's back with this truly fantastic golf course. This course uses semi-blindness off the tee extremely well and generally wows with a truly impressive low tide dunes environment and excellent course design and greens throughout.
4. Orion Ranch by mattf27
The first course built entirely by a cat. it's a mattf course, with a splash of tpetro making for an interesting collab. I don't feel I need to say anything more, go play it.
3. Last Dollar Match Club by tpetro
speak of the devil, not only did he help finish Orion ranch but here he is, the other ridiculously prolific designer himself, Petro, releasing another amazing little bunkerless thought experiment in the form of Last Dollar Match Club. For working out of his comfort zone, he still made an excellent course that Im sure I'll keep playing over and over. excellent ground game and excellent greens are his forte
2. The Flamingo (TGCT) by VctryLnSprts and mayday_golf83
specifically the TGCT version of this course has elevated it to what I would consider the single most well rounded course of the month, being both a visual spectacle and a ridiculously fun little course. this subtly (or not so subtly) templatey course emphasizes why mayday is one of my favorite designers in the game. From the greenwork to the strategy, I love everything about this course.
1. Ransom Ranch (Fall) by whodatmatt34
Now you might ask, how does this course beat all the other courses here? I really suggest you just go and play this course, multiple times, from different tees and different pins and come back and tell me this isnt one of the most unique and interesting courses you've played in a while. The ideas and the strategy on this course is just extremely fun to figure out and just like the OG club the month before, elevates itself above all others for being so refreshing to play. What a course.
