I've been holding off on a PC upgrade for a long time because I don't know what I'm doing, but after my computer has locked up twice today already (in addition to the usual periodic crashes of 2K21), I'm thinking I might not be able to push it back much longer. I'll probably go to a local computer shop that I just found, maybe next week. I thought it might be helpful to know what I'm doing, or at least be in the ballpark, before I go.
I'm sure these posts come up from time to time, so sorry if this post is repetitive. Anyways, short back story, I built my PC back in 2014 specifically to play TGC. A roommate I lived with at the time told me what to buy and helped me put it together. I haven't really thought about it since, as I haven't really had too much trouble running any rendition of TGC.
I just play on whatever the default settings are, I don't play any other games on it, and I pretty much just need to reliably be able to use the course designer for the foreseeable future. Oh, I have a kitchen remodel coming up too, so I have to keep the budget down, as if things weren't bad enough.
So what here looks the most out of date, and what can I upgrade to get the best bang for my buck and keep me in the game?
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670K CPU @ 3.40 GHz 3.40 GHz 12.00 GB RAM 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor Windows 10
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
Treat me with kid gloves please!

My first thought is, upgrade that RAM. Buy another stick if you have an extra slot or, if one slot only, throw out the 8gb RAM stick and buy a 16gb stick. You'll need to research and make sure you buy the right type for your PC but it seems like the 16gb sticks can be bought for under $100 on Amazon. Also, the installation should be easy as you have a separate tower I assume. RAM basically pulls out easily, then you slip the new RAM in. Check online for the appropriate way to install RAM though. Just my uneducated two cents.

Just my uneducated two cents.
This seems reasonable enough, and definitely more educated than the person who created the thread.
When I looked up and typed the RAM, it did actually occur to me that that seemed pretty low, like it was probably a moderate amount of RAM at best in 2014, and too little now.
Perhaps you know this, hopefully it's not a dumb question. When you add more RAM, does that require more computing power? Like is there an amount of RAM that would be too much for my processor to handle? Or is the processor totally irrelevant?
Thanks for the original reply, regardless!

No the extra ram helps you to run the programs and keep the frame rates acceptable. Go 16gb for sure.

I’m going to be getting my computer up and running again soon. Mine seems similar to yours except it has 32GB ram and 1070GTX 8 or 16 GB can’t remember if it’s 8 or 16 on the card. Think the video card will be then thing to upgrade possibly.
GPU memory is probably one if not the most important things you can upgrade to see a significant difference. Normal CPU ram is good too but all that does is Helps the processor push out the workload a little more efficiently. Don’t think you need that much to be honest to see any difference for this game. Again, GPU is where you will see a difference as long as you have a decent processor which you seem to have.

theclv24I’m far from the expert here but I’ve been researching a gaming PC a lot in the past month. Your graphics card only has 1GB of memory which is really holding you back. You’re running the game on the minimum PC requirements from HB and those requirements are likely geared towards playing the game rather than a lot of time in the designer. The bad news is that a lot of GPUs are expensive and/or hard to find at the moment because of a global shortage. Here is a link to your GPU’s specs from the website I use to research and compare GPUs: www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-650-ti.c1188

No, don't tell me this!
Actually, I had read the same thing more or less, mostly due to bitcoin. On the other hand, I was told those reports were overblown, because bitcoin miners have moved on to more powerful resources and are no longer competing with gamers
I think for now it seems like my best bet is to start with RAM, and then eventually a new GPU once the market normalizes, if the market normalizes.

Well unfortunately I'm back here again. In the past 3-4 days I essentially haven't been able to accomplish anything in the game without a crash. Sometimes the designer even crashes while loading a course, let alone trying to do something as simple as change the menu. I've tried a few different courses, and tried loading up a society round today and didn't even make it to the 1st tee. I'm pessimistic that this might be the end of the road.
Here are my current specs:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670K CPU @ 3.40 GHz 3.40 GHz 12.00 GB RAM 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor Windows 10 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
So do I have any hope left with this computer?
If not, can anyone recommend the route I should go for a replacement? This game is basically all I use the PC for, and I have enough going on at the moment, so anything intensive on my part in terms of building a PC is not an option. I need a plug and play solution here. Can anyone recommend anything affordable? Stuff looks cheap at BestBuy.com (like $1000 or less), but I have no clue if you are getting garbage at that price or if there is legit value there.
Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!
Anyone know if there's a market for an old manually built computer or its parts?

That's a very good price for those specs theclv24 , very good recommendation sandgroper and I would of recommended a similar desktop spec PC. The Ryzen 5 5600X is one of the best bang for buck CPU's out there. An RTX 3060 will run this game very well on 1440p and below and you have DLSS as it's an RTX card so it would upscale well to 4K with performance mode and balanced. Hopefully you get your upgrade Craig as you design some of the best courses out there on 2K23. Merion is my favourite course in the game

Thanks, I did actually get a new computer a few days ago and I'm back in the designer. That recommendation was a great starting point and I almost bought it. I ended up finding something with very similar specs at Costco, so I bought that one to get my cash back points there.
