Hahahahaha you thought you were really heading to the desert didn't you. Those who have been around a while should know better! Welcome to week 23. This week we head to Cherrybrook by our favorite CC designer mattf27. Even when he doesn't design a course to be used on CC, I use it anyway! Every 10 weeks or so I try and give you a bit of a challenge. Nothing fancy here, just a solid golf course that looks great and plays even better. Low winds and firm conditions greet you for the first two rounds, then the winds pick up, but the course softens a bit. If you can navigate the wind in round 3, I expect some good scores to be put up there. Good luck and have fun!

Hey everyone, new week new notes - played this one 3 times with different pins. One of the best Matt F. did this course and he has complex green complexes so that's something to keep in mind. I think we've only played one course over 7500 before so we've got to workout those driver muscles.
CHERRYBROOK 72-7515
Architect Matt Fritsch: "Set in the outskirts of Philadelphia, this parkland championship course should provide a fine setting for competitive play of all sorts."
If you can remember Georgia Match Club by Matt, the one that was similar to Augusta, I think a few of us thought it was one of the toughest putting challenges we faced and that continues here - some greens are smaller targets to hit as well. Some bunkers are sneaky deep while others are typical. Usually I don’t mind landing in sand, but some of these sandtraps are deep enough where they could restrict club selection. Georgia Match Club had wide fairways but here they’re standard widths so fairway bunkers are more likely to be in play. A lot of greens sit on propped up so there’s not much chance of hitting low runners that can bounce onto the green towards front pin positions- perhaps a good time to add loft to approach shots especially for front pin locations. This will play tougher than Cavacom though the handicap of 71.8 (as of now) is similar. Watch out for the round with very firm greens - that may be a 3-putt type of day for a lot of us (or just me he he).
1-5-540. The first hole is a straightaway par-4 with bunkers on the right side at the 300 yard mark. An east or southeast wind carry us to the green in two. The large undulating green is split into three compartments by ridges. If we’re in the wrong compartments, it could come back to bite us and a possible eagle will wind up as a measly par due to a 3-putt.
2-4-493. #3 handicap. Well that was fun but we’ve got to get to work now – no more lounging around on par-5’s. A wakeup call long par-4 doglegging left, the approach will be 200+ yards without a mammoth drive down the fairway. The landing area bunkers will take birdie out of play but a 3-wood tee ball would leave too long of an approach. The 2nd shot has to play down a fairway headed right towards a green headed left so it could be an awkward shot from so far out. The long green slopes left to right. This hole may balance out the birdie we get on 1. The greenside bunkers are deeper -missing left is best.
3-3-179. The 3rd hole is slightly uphill and the green is positioned to receive fades (for righties). The key may be in hitting the proper tier on the green depending on where the pin is or at least staying below the hole. The two greenside bunkers to the right are deep and below the green level – try to avoid those nasty things if at all possible. The green is also on a mound so missing short on the apron is the best miss.
4-4-434. Visually, it’s a double dogleg but don’t let that bother you, the fairway is wide enough to hit with any kind of shot and the 3 fairway bunkers probably won’t come into play. There's good news and bad news – what do you want first? Bad news? Okay. There’s a false front on the green. Good news? There’s a backstop at the back in case the approach is too long. Manageable bunkers on this 4th hole.
5-5-569. A second par-5 early on could give us confidence for the rest of the course. Both par-5’s are almost routine birdies so they’ll keep us under par a little longer if we can take advantage. This one requests a draw off the tee and then a fade into the green that hides behind two bunkers that won’t feel like a jail sentence – we can break out of these sandtraps if we're going for the green in two.
6-4-418. This par-4 turns sharply to the right at the 300-yard mark with deep bunkers in the landing area – awkward for a driver. Playing downhill off the tee, the 6th may be best Then again, an eastern wind can help the driver clear the bunkers. You can also aim right and loft it over the trees as a short cut over the bunkers- if you can carry it 300 yards 20 feet downhill, it will reach the fairway and leave just a 50-yard pitch remaining the tame green. A southeastern wind will help the more challenging drive. The green is shallow with a backboard.
7-4-468. A basic uphill par-4, straightaway – driver and short iron (or long iron in a SE wind) should do it. Avoid bunkers left of the 300-yard mark. The green complex sits on tilted terrain and 3 bunkers front the green on the left so we can’t run it up onto the smallish putting surface. Avoid the bunkers at all costs cause any pitch from them could roll right, off the green and down the runoff area leaving an awkward 40 yard, 10 foot uphill. The green is severe with a vertical spine which splits it.
8-3-140. Some Rolaids relief is given here if you have a stomach ache from some of the tougher holes. Only a wedge is required since it’s downhill and the green is smaller than others here but big enough to land on. There’s some undulation but this can be considered a birdie chance.
9-4-506. #1 handicap Well I hope you had fun on the last one cause we’re back to business with a 500-yard long par-4 that runs straight ahead with little elevation. Stay left with the drive to avoid those fairway bunkers. The green slopes right to left with a significant false front.
10-4-477. A bunker hangout spot, the back nine of Cherrybrook continues to challenge. Almost a dozen bunkers are there to welcome us, sitting at this light dogleg left. Good news – it’s a downhill hole so it plays shorter. The bad news – well yes there is bad news, the fairway camber heads left but a fade works best towards this narrow green, so they clash, making it hard to judge. I hit a practice shot and just missed the green left but it skidded down towards the water 30 yards from the hole, uphill 12 feet. Don’t be like me and go skidding down the bank.
11-4-451. One of the more scenic holes, #11 might distract me but I need to stay focused – this is a tournament – I can’t sight see right now! The hole crosses water twice and the fairway is pinched by 4 bunkers at the 300-yard mark. A 3-wood fade tee shot is the safe bet that way even with a slow swing the ball may stay left away from water. Stay below the hole on this 2-tiered green.
12-3-243. #2 handicap A bogey possibility is available if we’re interested – I can head to this hole anytime if I’d like a bogey – not that I’d want one but the sheer length of this hole can make it awkward. In a northeast or east wind (I think) will play against us – so a wood club may be the only way to reach the green. Best miss is long and left – landing short may bring one of 4 bunkers into play – and the runoff back right towards the water is the worst spot to land in.
13-3-172. Hey back to back par-3’s, this one is the friendlier brother of the other snippy par-3 12th. The small green is relaxed with a light ridge crossing the middle. Other than the ridge, this may be the flattest green – though it’s downhill, the green sits on a hump so you can’t run the ball onto it. 153
14-5-539. A dogleg left par-5 – as long as we’re not in the inside dogleg fairway bunkers, we have an eagle chance. While many bunkers at Cherrybrook are deep – these are shallow enough for a hybrid or long iron out without worry that they’ll hit the front lip.
15-4-357. Another chance to make up for any bogeys on the recent tough holes 9 and 10, most will probably hit driver off the tee despite the 7 bunkers along this short dogleg right par-4. Wood/wedge or driver/pitch is the choice. Work the ball off the left slope so it skids towards the tri-compartment green.
16-5-601. The longest hole at Cherrybrook, it’s not quite as sweet as cherries like the other par-5’s. After the drive, the dilemma lay in the large body of water sitting 50 yards from the green. Is it worth clearing the water on the 2nd shot? Well depending on our strategy, wind and club lengths, we’ll have to judge whether it’s worth it. I’ll probably lay up here and keep it a 3-shot par-5.
17-4-438. Another bunker hangout spot, let’s not bother them since they could harass us if we’re not respectful. A straightaway hole, slightly uphill – pretty basic strategy. The green slopes to the right and is more sloped on the front and will help balls roll to pins on the right.
18-4-493. The final hole wraps up very business-like. At about 500 yards, you can tell from the tee view that those hungry bunkers really want to eat our golf ball. A draw (for righties) then fade can best avoid those bad fellas. The hole is uphill so this is the course’s most crucial tee shot-the stream won’t interfere. Recovery will be highly demanding whether from the bunkers or rough. Luckily the green is reasonably kind and if we need a make a 10-footer for par for instance like I had, then there’s a chance.
Have a great week - don't worry if you 3-putt too much, you won't have as many as me. LOL

Super fun course, really feels like a PGA-tour venue. Hit the far right side of the 10th fairway but got punted down into the heavy rough on the left. Quite the warm welcome.
Stoked for this week. Gonna be fun.

Hit a practice round last night, course seems pretty scoreable, looking forward to it.
Famous last words.

I switched to the 295 driver that you guys suggested last week and promptly had the best round I remember having in this tour. I hope this is a sign of good things to come!

I've been on fire in recent weeks, but I've never played THIS good. Three shot lead after two rounds of -15 and -14, with three straight eagles in round 2. Hopefully I can keep it up on the weekend rounds.

Excellent course this week by mattf27, really enjoyed my two rounds yesterday. Played a warmup round and shot a -10 in my first round for the tournament this week. Looking to put together four good rounds. I don't think the greens are too tough and the pins for pin set 1 were in fair locations. Excellent sight lines and the bunkers and planting are very well done. Feels like a real course besides all of the dead grass under trees. Not sure why people think that looks good. High end courses grow grass under trees. What is this other tournament going on at Shaker Valley in the promotions society? Inca's Edge promo event is next week, I thought that was this week, but had the date wrong...

Nice course this week! -24 for the week, overall it was pretty much fine for me except for round 3 which was a disappointing -1. Without that I might have continued a strong run of top 25s. I still could since it's early but I doubt it. At least I seem to have expectations now, being slightly disappointed at a 4 round score which is still among one of my best. It is what it is, no big deal in the end. Onto next week.
-9, -5, -1, -9 = -24.

CC-C
-12/-13/-8/-8
-41 Total
Looking like my second straight CC win this week. Hoping to take this momentum to the promo event and get up to the pro tours. Thought I could have played better in the last tow rounds but it is what it is.
