Two weeks into this design. Attempting to go for the Friar's Head look with sandy dunes and waste areas in some areas of the course and similar to Shinnecock Hills with having the clubhouse on top of the hill in sight from just about every hole. Just finished planting the first hole. Not quite sure if I'm capturing the look I'm trying to get, but I think I'm getting there. The layout is inspired by the original Lido design with the front nine wrapping around the back nine. Currently have the front at 3521 yds and the back at 3396 yds for a 6917 yd par 71 with 3 par 5's. Any thoughts/feedback or suggestions of similar courses in the game would be appreciated. 1st hole 1st green 2nd green

Break up the sand by using splattered brushes as opposed to splines, use more grasses than bushes (half-bury the bushes you do use), and use delta & bury trees to scar the base texture for the sandy look. Also use elm, maple, and ash trees - don't use those funky oaks. Gotta make sure those forests look tall and full.

Some updated pics. Changed the theme to delta from highlands. Changed the oaks to a combination of birch, maple, and pine. Still not sure if that's the right look, but it's better. Added a lot more sand using brushes, looks much better. Still a lot of planting to do. Plan on releasing a beta for this course hopefully by the end of the week. 1st tee 1st green 2nd tee 3rd tee

I like the look you have going on here. Love that last photo you have posted!

Looking good. Glad you changed the lighting from your original screenshots.
If I can't get to this today, I will for sure on Friday.

Looks good! I feel like we are doing some similar courses in different styles, which is cool. Have you considered creating some intentional distressing in the rough, particularly around bunkers, and using buried trees? I also notice Shinnie and some others have intermediate cuts. I like the 5 texture because the intermediate is really close to the heavy rough, but adds some depth

It is cool, plenty of excellent Long Island courses to take inspiration from. Just look at the recent courses you've released. All Long Island inspired courses, but all have a different feel and look, right? I have a ton of trees buried. It's not that easy to see in the pictures. I used the heavy rough brush to get rid of any straight lines from the distressed look. I wanted to try and make a course without the intermediate cut. I could mess around with it a bit and see what it looks like. And you will not see any of my courses with any dead grass in the in play areas. I have the distressed look on this course, but that's the look I'm going for. Distressed grass in waste areas is great, dead grass around bunkers and trees is not in my opinion. I'm an assistant superintendent, we get fired for that type of stuff lol. Not sure why people think dead grass looks good...

I think the distress around the bunkers is sort of a stand-in for the sandy transition you sometimes see between heavy rough and sand. It's a proxy for that, like in the NGLA photo below. But yeah ideally there would be a brush to create a transition like that.

I really liked your beta, just played it. One thing, I would raise the sun a bit as I was putting in shadow a lot, even when there weren't trees around. Great clean lines and subtle shaping.Definite get the sense of place of the East End

I guess the style of maintenance for the course depends too because obviously at NGLA they have the money for sod, but it looks like they choose not to spend it on sod. From my perspective, the faces on the bunkers in that picture are completely contaminated with sand and need to be replaced with sod. Looks like maybe some brown patch (fungal disease) in there too. Even the transition areas from the heavy rough into the sand look contaminated with weeds. Obviously the look they are going for at the top five ranked course out on Long Island. Unfortunately native areas are not that easy to create in this game otherwise I would've put tall fescue grass all over this design like a lot of the nicer American links courses have, including Shinnecock and NGLA. And thanks for checking out the beta. I am going to raise up the sun a bit and put it over the ocean. I think that angle works a little bit better to brighten up most of the course.

Hey you'd know better than I would! And there's plenty of sod farms on the east end of LI, so it's not for lack of inventory. I think more recent photos it's a little cleaner. I haven't played there since 2008 so I need to go back. Ideally they would create a fescue texture and we could just lay that down with a brush. Maybe for 2K22 or beyond!

Or maybe the superintendent was just doing a bad job... It doesn't help that this area has tough summers to maintain high quality turf. Very easy for disease to spread once it gets going. And I agree there should be a fescue texture and/or surface. If you could just spline areas of fescue grass that would be ideal. Maybe it's too much for the game to process. My PS4 sounds like it's about to take off it's so loud when I'm playing some of the better courses...

I saw a vid of his come up in my recommended on YT earlier.
