Welcome to week 17 and a bit of a breather after a few tough weeks. This week is all about the putting.. Very fast green speeds for 3 of the rounds and fast for the other. Course should be playing soft, but is short... so will be a bit of a dart throwing contest... so hit them close and make the putts!
Good Luck!

Took my usual notes this week- James let me know if I'm off about anything.
POINTE WEST (Real course in Juno Beach, Florida) Par 72, 6851 yards. Handicap rating 71.4
Architect: John Sanford, 2K21 Architect: James Byars
James Byars: “Not far from Vero Beach, Pointe West Country Club offers terrific views and challenging play for golfers at every skill level. The John Sanford designed layout was built in 2000 and the well-groomed fairways and greens keep Pointe West Country Club difficult yet friendly. Play a round or two on this community course while you enjoy the Florida sun on a beautiful April morning.”
From the website:
Rising from an old citrus grove, the course at Pointe West was developed in 1999. Golf course architect John Sanford had a vision for a uniquely sculpted course, and countless tons of earth were moved to create elevated tees, elevated landing areas, peaks in fairways and elevated greens. Striking bunker complexes were created to highlight subtle mounding and some unique features were incorporated to extenuate several “risk/reward” situations. Most notably the 18th fairway is traversed by a water feature just short of the green making for an exciting moonlighting finishing hole. A testament to the variety of holes created by Sanford is Pointe West’s par 5s. Both the second and the ninth holes are reachable in two solid shots; the tenth hole requires two long strategically placed strikes to get home and the mammoth 598 yard 16th is a true three shot test.
My notes: I played 3 rounds, once with very fast greens, once with high east winds, then with high northeast winds, then with southeast winds. Played pins #2, #3, #4.
A warm spot to be in a long winter is very comforting. We're heading to Florida to play a real life course- and we will never go thirsty at Pointe West. All that blue water doesn’t cause the blues as this easy course feels like a vacation spot compared to last week’s Royal Halex. Flat like typical Florida courses, the greens are mild without much movement but they’re all narrow or shallow, depending at what angle they sit relative to the fairway. Look to see your GIR% drop so get ready for chipping. Of course, watch the very fast speeds on not just putting but any short game shots as well. A chip may fly 10 feet past a hole. ‘Fast’ swingers will have a tough time with a strong wind blowing east towards water on some holes. The bunkers are shallow, the water is prominent, and wide fairways abound.
I have a feeling the cut lines will be way under par despite the speedy greens, so to keep up with everyone else, it’s totally worth getting your best binoculars out and being aggressive in your birdwatching – birdie and eagle opportunities are flocking around the course. Getting it close is worth it like Catcherman said – better to aim at the hole than the middle of the green.
1) 4-406. The course opens with a straightforward hole, a driver and wedge should be fine. A east/northeast wind may blow the golf ball towards the landing area fairway bunker left, but it’s shallow. The horizontal banana-shaped green has a light back-to-front slope. The #3 pin is close to the back so don’t hit it too far or you may find yourself facing one of the rocks just behind the green. A birdie chance.
2) 5-520. The wide fairway winds left slightly to avoid water along the entire right side on this straight hole. Don’t get fooled into drawing off the tee because the tall palm tree just right of the sightline could knock some distance off the drive. The narrow green is reachable in 2 even against any possible east-type wind. An easy birdie, pars will lose a stroke to the rest of the field.
3) 4-439. Water on the left appears at around the 300-yd mark so strong winds east will have us think twice about driver, but the club should be fine in any strong east headwind. The same water body wraps around the back of the green which is gently sloped back-right to front-left. Overall, not too intimidating. Missing short is the safest miss.
4) 4-340. Flex those muscles and crank that driver if the wind blows hard northeast as it makes the 4th hole an eagle chance. A birdie chance otherwise.
5) 3-173. #2 handicap. Not overly difficult despite the shallow strip of green, this par-3 has water short and bunkers surrounding but none are overly threatening. The green receives fades best. A southeast wind blows towards the water so make sure your tempo isn't slow.
6) 4-381. Though the hole may look a bit frightening with all the water, don’t drown yourself just yet LOL. Even in strong winds, the tee shot will be secure because of the wide fairway. The short approach is trickier with water hugging the green from both sides – avoid going right in particular. The #3 pin sits on a light spine and the green has more slope than the others. #4 pin is a dangerous one sitting next to the water right. *Be mindful of the green speed here.
7)4-382. A birdie chance. Similar to the 3rd hole, this straight par-4 has water appearing at the 300-yd mark on the left hand side. The safe play is 3-wood and you’ll still be left with a gap wedge into the 2-tiered narrow green. Iif the wind blows hard southeast, a driver tee shot will head straight towards the wa-wa.
8) 3-203. These greens are getting a tad claustrophobic. A 90-yd long bunker is left and a smaller bunker right. The long green slopes right to left in the front, and left-to right at the back. The #3 pin sits furthest away- hit the green’s front right and watch the ball feed to back pin locations. Water left is easily avoidable unless the wind is up.
9) 5-523. Drink up, there’s plenty of water for everyone -seemingly on every hole. The blue on the right extends along the entire 523 yds. The closer the tee shot is to the water, the better the angle for the approach. Drives to the left side of the wide fairway will leave blocked approaches to the green. If that occurs, two 3-wood shots will be enough to get home in two and will give you room for a draw around the trees on the approach. The #3 pin may be tough. If you’re tired, hop on the golf cart behind the tee.
10) 5-498. Back-to-back par-5’s. Both are eagle chances. Using driver may land us in the water sitting left and 3-woods have to deal with a lumpy patch of rough in the centerline of the fairway. The narrow green slopes right-to left. A total pushover, they’ll be so many eagles here, they could throw a party to celebrate our success.
11) 3-192. The only danger is water to the left, behind the green, but the wind will be blowing away from it so this should be an easy par.
12) 4-447. #3 handicap. A dogleg left around water, the fairway pinches a bit at the 300-yd mark but the hole is short enough to handle anyway if we’re in the rough. And be respectful – don’t be nosy and try to look into people’s houses that sit near this hole. That’s very not nice!
13) 4-383. You can bully this hole all you want as a proper drive will result in a short pitch. Another birdie chance since the greenside bunkers aren’t deep.
14) 3-208. #1 handicap. Another cashew-shaped green, this one’s a bit smaller and likes to hang out next to the water right. Avoid a ‘slow’ tempo here or we’re wet. Like the 5th hole, the green is most willing to give to those who fade it off the tee (for righties), but there’s no need with a southeast wind carrying the ball right.
15) 4-424. A short enough hole to go with either driver or 3-wood, the east winds blow away from the water along the left. The peanut green isn’t too salty allowing plenty of birdie possibilities.
16) 5-579. Easily, the toughest par-5. Water left, stream right of the fairway, there’s a rude tree and stone that refuse to leave the middle of the fairway at the 300-yd mark. The tree is manageable, and it’s unlikely we’ll get stuck behind the small stone. Try for the left side since there are more trees further out that block approaches stemming from the right side of the fairway.
17) 4-455. More houses- how many people live on this course? Their probably filming us with their cellphones. Once again there’s water all along the right. A mildly-contorted peanut-shaped green is mildly contoured. No draws here, the tree close to the tee will interfere.
18) 4-298. This is really entertaining final hole with lots of possible outcomes; from eagle to double-bogey. Drivable, even against a strong headwind, water and sand line the sides of the narrow green that favors a fade off the tee if using driver. The green slopes from back-right to front-left but even the longest lag putt should be no issue here.
Enjoy the Florida warmth, have fun, be aggressive, and break out your favorite sunglasses. That flamingo putter goes great with the Florida vibe.

Man this place is a complete crapshoot. I've had rounds varying from -10 to E during practice, and it all depends on how close I hit my approach shots. Really fun course though, so nice with a breather.

The course is terrific. And a real Florida setting. But one little critique. There are mountains in the background. Mountains are not in Florida, lol. No biggie and didn’t notice until about hole 3. But the actual course and in and around the course is no doubt a Florida course.

Went -8 in the last practice, hitting greens and making putts. Hitting a whole bunch of "Perfects". Saw that the tourney had started in the exact same conditions I just practiced. Gave it a go and hit almost no fairways, made a bunch of bogeys and came in at +1. I'm playing like garbage right now. Hopefully I'll avoid another demo mark.

These greens can get bent. Lol. Idk if it was just me cause I’m still figuring thing out but just played my RD1 and I could not get a grasp on what the greens were going to actually do each hole. A lot of decent length birdie putts I’d read what I thought it was going to do and put. It would hardly break compared to what I thought. So then I’d go for my back where I’d missed and think to myself alright remember it doesn’t break that much. And then it’d break like crazy from 10 ft out. Lol. Turned a lot of Birdie attempts in to Bogey but it was fun. Hopefully I can make up some strokes the next few rounds.

Wasn't going to play this week. Like Axel above I've been playing kind of poorly this week. Had no desire to play this one, even though the course is great. Just wasn't feeling it. For some reason decided to go for it. This tournament can best be summed up as "limit the damage". Wasn't expecting to come close to the cut line. Decent round 1 then Shot a 60 (a 59 would have been my 1'st 59 in this season) in round 2. Crap, now the pressure is on. All I wanted to do was avoid a demo mark. Wound up having my best event yet this season. (final 4 round score redacted). Hope to have a decent final placing. Could use a bit of a confidence boost. Playing the quality of players in CCA is humbling and stressfull when you are an average to below average player. During all my practice rounds I had no self control. Just smash driver all the time, even that lovely par 4 18'th. This time I played smart, 3 wood on lots of tee shots to avoid trouble. The 187's I prefer as putting is about the only place I feel confident with. This hole sums up my whole tournament. Limit the damage. Take birdies when you can get them. Felt weird to just chip it out 20 feet on a par 5. Stupid side of my brain said to just smash it, but for some reason the sensible side over powered the stupid side lol Made my par, boost of adrenaline helped me birdie the next. Of all places I can wind up. Good luck everyone.

Also, am I going insane or is someone else experiencing different controller behavior from round to round? Sometimes the vibration on putts work great, other times it's almost non-existent. Like, you can barely feel it. PS4.

Bruh, why am I so inconsistent? Followed my +1 R1 score with a 66 in R2. So I'll probably be right around the cut bubble again. I just can't seem to get two good opening rounds together so I can relax after R2 knowing I'll make the cut.

Has anybody else noticed an issue on one of the greens (unfortunately I didn't record the number) on this course, whereby the green changed colour while you were putting? I was lining up for a putt, and the green changed from a green-ish to a red-ish hue. It didn't matter, but I was curious if this was an issue with: my TV, my xbox, my connection, or just something randomly funky that came up. If anybody else noticed it that would alleviate my concerns! Thanks

Saw that this morning too. Made me feel better about some of my putts seemly going the opposite direction that I had thought they would. Legit thought I was going crazy on a few holes and didn't know that "phantom" breaks were a thing.

CC-E
-1/-6/-7/-10
-24 total
I was -7 through 12 holes in the first round then had three bogeys and a triple on holes 13-16. Other than those four holes this round went very well. Hope to make the cut because most of my scoring happened in the last two rounds.

Legit thought I was going crazy on a few holes and didn't know that "phantom" breaks were a thing. This sounds like small imperfections in the lidar data that weren't smoothed out and so a green box will have a hump in the middle of it that doesn't touch any grid lines. Hole 1 of round 2 saw me three putt from 7' on what looked like a dead straight putt (and I had a straight swing motion on the putt too).
