Hey guys,
I am in the final stages of my LiDAR course now running around putting in a few bushes here and there and the like to add ‘realism’ to the feel of the course but the play throughs and everything are good I think.
This post is for the question about adding crowds. I assume that for the course to be considered for any tournament play it would need crowds?
I was going through CrazyCanuks videos but dont see anything on crowds, now playing around with it I can easily decipher the settings that I want to use in general I think as I can see how placing the crowds seem to work...... BUT
Are there any ‘general guidelines’ that designers use for how much and where, tournament structures etc etc. I guess it would come down to how I do it and that is fine, just wondering if there are any ideas so that it is not “overdone”.
Thanks in advance
RCH

not a fan of crowds. Mr. Canuck never puts them on any of his courses!
I would put it this way, IRL (In Real Life) would there ever be grandstands on this course? I wouldn't bother with crowds unless this was a big tournament venue OR it was a fictional course with a fictional backstory of being a tournament venue

You don't need crowds for your course to be considered for tournament play. There are plenty of courses on various TGCtours related tours that do not feature crowds of any sort.
I'm with Q. Plus the course you are working on is only about 6700 yards that should be promoting the scenery and beautiful views, not grandstands. However, you may want to consider a fictional "Tour" version that is published separately that has a single extra long tee (if you can fit one), a change to par 71 or 70 and then include crowds/grandstands, etc.

I didn't put any crowds on a golf course for 3 years until I did for last year's major contest. The idea of the contest was to create a course that would be used in the Olympics. Recently, I did a LiDar version of Plainfield Country Club, which hosts the Barclays every few years. That course got the tournament treatment since I was basing everything on the 2015 Barclays. Other than that, I usually don't do crowds. There are some guys out there that complain about lack of crowds and how that takes away from immersion into the round or tournament. They have a point, but it's not worth cluttering up your course for a small minority. Especially if it's not really a 'tour' type course. I'm going to do exactly what mal suggested and do a "tour" version of my other LiDar course. It's too easy for any tour as it is, so I'll convert at least 1 par 5 into a 4 and add some tournament objects.

You can compromise, add a couple of very small crowds strategically - at the clubhouse, hidden in the woods - to let the folks who need applause hear some, but keep them out of sight 😜
