Event 20 - 1970 ATLANTA CLASSIC at Peachtree Golf Club - Round 1
Well, without doubt the Peachtree greens are the toughest we will face in the 1970 season. All the 'guest' players struggled on the opening day, and probably will continue to struggle in subsequent rounds. Randy Grant and Bob Fletcher suffered the most and came in with a pair of 78's. Also looking dejected were Ian McKinley and Mark Lipping after their slightly better 77's. Hans Kunok made a rare appearance and did relatively well by carding a 74, while Nate Arteezy's 73 was the best of the guest rounds. Only three rounds to go...

Event 20 - 1970 ATLANTA CLASSIC at Peachtree Golf Club - Round 2
The guest players are still having a torrid time at Peachtree and were unable to improve their positions today. Bob Fletcher's 75 leaves him at rock bottom of the leaderboard, 2 strokes behind Ian McKinley and Mark Lipping who both shot 74. This pair are 4 adrift of Nate Arteezy who also carded a 74 which sees him in sole possession of 77th place. Hans Kunok produced the best guest round, a hard-earned 71, lifting him into a tie for 64th, a couple of strokes clear of Nate. Only 2 more rounds of torture to go...

Event 20 - 1970 ATLANTA CLASSIC at Peachtree Golf Club - Round 3
Forget about the higher echelons of the leaderboard, all the 'guest player' action is happening down at the bottom! For the third successive round Mark Lipping and Ian McKinley again matched each other shot for shot, but distinctly unimpressive 78's was all they could muster today, leaving them tied for last place, joint 77th. The only other guest round that I am aware of was Bob Fletcher's, and his almost competent 71 lifted him 5 strokes clear of Mark and Ian and into 76th spot. However, I have a feeling that the final round will be the worst one, considering the green speed and the slopes involved...

Event 20 - 1970 ATLANTA CLASSIC at Peachtree Golf Club - Round 4
The main talking point has to be the bone-hard greens and putting. It wasn't uncommon to see putts rolling off the green to leave a 30 or 40 yard shot back to the pin and, because of that, Peachtree has been black-listed for future tour play. End of. The four heroic guests who completed four torturous rounds will be glad their suffering is at an end, but not before one final dose of excrutiating pain on this final day. Mark Lipping and Ian McKinley both carded a 91, meaning they were tied for last place having scored the same as each other in every single round. Late starter Carl Bishop shot 84 today to finish 77th, 7 shots clear of Mark and Ian. Bob Fletcher managed a nearly creditable 80 to end the week in 76th spot, a further 9 strokes clear of Carl.
The tourney was won by Tommy Aaron, ending 10 years of winless frustration. Tommy began the final round 2 strokes behind leader Tom Weiskopf, and got off to a fast start, but on the 14th hole Aaron called a 2-stroke penalty on himself for moving his ball illegally. He recalls: "It was quite a shock when I realized I had moved the ball in an area where it wasn't allowed. I knew I had just donated two strokes to the field." However, he ended up setting a new scoring record for the event and taking home the winner's cheque.

Following Hans Kunok winning the Winter Trophy for gaining the most earnings over the first 10 events of the 1970 season, MARK LIPPING has now won the SPRING SWING for the most earnings over events 11 to 20 of the season. And with half the season finished, Mark now tops the overall Money List, with Ian McKinley his closest rival. We now have a one week break before the second half of the season begins with the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic at the TPC of Southwind. There is another trophy up for grabs for the player winning the most money over events 21 to 30 - the Summer Bowl.

We take a 1-week break from the 1970 PGA TOUR before we begin playing the next 10 events which constitute the 'Summer Bowl', events that include the US Open and the British Open Championship. For those wanting to continue playing this week, I have set up the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. That's the beauty of PLAYPGATOUR - if the leaderboard is available, we can replicate any tournament, quite often using the same course originally used by the real professionals.
2015 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Whistling Straits
Round 1 - Dustin Johnson was fast out of the blocks by shooting a 66, the best round of the day. The nearest 'guest' to him was Ian McKinley who hit a solid 71, earning him a tie for 24th spot. Mark Lipping and Nate Arteezy were close behind after their 72's, while Bob Fletcher struggled with his game and could only card a disappointing 77.

2015 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Whistling Straits - Round 2
Overnight leader Dustin Johnson fell way from the top of the leaderboard after he carded a 73 today. Matt Jones took over as tournament leader courtesy of a sublime 65, giving him a 2-stroke lead from Jason Day. Nate Arteezy became the best-placed guest player, following his opening day 72 with an impressive 66. Two shots behind Nate is Ian McKinley who fired a 69, a score matched by Mark Lipping who remains a shot adrift of Ian. Bob Fletcher made good progress when he came in with a fine 68, although he is still only tied for 64th place.

2015 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Whistling Straits - Round 3
After close of play today Jason Day emerged as top dog, carving out a 2-shot advantage over Jordan Spieth with a fine 66. The best guest player is Nate Arteezy who is 11 strokes off the pace in a tie for 30th after an unsatisfactory 74. A shot behind Nate is Bob Fletcher who carded his second successive 68 of the event to lift himself up to a share of 37th place. Mark Lipping's 72 sees him level with Bob while Ian McKinley, who had looked solid during the first two rounds, crumbled today and his 78 leaves him tied for 67th and out of the picture...

2015 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Whistling Straits - Round 4
Well, none of the guest players came anywhere close to depriving Jason Day of his Major win at Whistling Straits this week, but I hope we still enjoyed the challenge! In the end Bob Fletcher, with a final round 70, was the best of the guests, finishing tied for 25th and rueing his poor opening round. In a share of 31st, a single stroke back from Bob, was Mark Lipping who signed off with a 71, and a further stroke back was Nate Arteezy after a subdued 73 today. Ian McKinley, who also shot a 71, finished at 1 over par in a tie for 64th, but I think he's saving himself for next week's tourney at TPC Southwind...

Event 21 - 1970 DANNY THOMAS MEMPHIS CLASSIC at TPC Southwind - Round 1
It's back to the weekly grind of tour play this week! The relatively short TPC Southwind course is possibly one of the easiest on the tour, and three of our guest players took advantage of that today. Money leader Mark Lipping found the form that has enabled him to win four tournaments so far this season, and his sparkling 64 sees him one stroke behind the leader, PGA professional Dave Hill. Bob Fletcher was very pleased with his opening 66, giving him a share of 7th, while Ian McKinley should be satisfied with his 67, leaving him tied for 14th.

Event 21 - 1970 DANNY THOMAS MEMPHIS CLASSIC at TPC Southwind - Round 2
Inexplicably, after his superb opening round of 64, Mark Lipping only managed to shoot a woeful 79 today, and that looks like the end of his winning hopes this week as Mark now finds himself in last place. At the business end of the leaderboard Ian McKinley, with another fine 67, and Bob Fletcher, with a 68, are now tied for 6th place, only 3 strokes behind Homero Blancas, the halfway point leader. Things are warming up...

Event 21 - 1970 DANNY THOMAS MEMPHIS CLASSIC at TPC Southwind - Round 3
Mark Lipping again struggled but improved on his second round score by carding a 72, lifting himself off the foot of the leaderboard in the process. Ian McKinley also had problems today, and his eventual 73 saw him drop into a tie for 40th place. Bob Fletcher, however, stayed in contention with a late rally in his round which helped him fire a 68. That puts him four strokes behind the leader and ready to make a final day move...

Event 21 - 1970 DANNY THOMAS MEMPHIS CLASSIC at TPC Southwind - Round 4
Going into the final round only one guest player had a realistic chance of winning this event - Bob Fletcher. Three consistent rounds had left him with the not insurmountable task of making up four strokes on the leader, and today's round conditions were favourable - it was just the pin positions that would provide a few headaches. As it turned out, Bob maintained his consistency but it wasn't high enough to claim victory. His closing round of 67 left him two shots short of forcing a play-off with Dave Hill, this week's winner, and he had to make do with 5th spot.
Ian McKinley also fired a 67 today, his third of the event, a score that rewarded him with a share of 23rd, and how he must be regretting his poor third round. Mark Lipping looked completely out of sorts on his way to a 77 and 76th spot, while late starter Charlie Roberts (welcome back bud!) played well for the first three rounds but slumped to an 84 today, leaving him anchored at the bottom of the leaderboard alongside Jack Lewis Junior.
So the professionals have won the last three events - can the guests break the sequence and find a win at Quail Hollow this coming week?

Event 22 - 1970 KEMPER OPEN at Quail Hollow - Round 1
Quail Hollow is one of my favourite courses, which may well mean I'm a masochist because it can provide a lot of pain if you don't play well. Even though the opening day conditions were not too bad, the course still played tough. Nate Arteezy struggled back to the clubhouse with a 75, while Ian McKinley shouldn't be too unhappy with his 72. Sneaking under par with a brace of 71's were Mark Lipping and the returning Charlie Roberts, while Bob Fletcher displayed unusual control with his shots and was rewarded with a 69, just 3 strokes off the pace.
