1970 TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS at La Costa Resort & Spa - Round 3
With one round left to play Frank Beard still leads from Tony Jacklin but now only by 2 strokes. Ian McKinley hit a fighting 67, the joint best round of the day with Jacklin, to elevate himself to a share of 6th place with Arnold Palmer, but being 9 shots off the pace makes a win very unlikely. Hans Kunok fought back to level par with his second succesive 70, and 2 strokes adrift of Hans is the ever-improving Randy Grant whose 71 today earned him a share of 17th place. Mark Lipping (72) and Nate Arteezy (73) are both having a tournament to forget and they are now tied 30th. Bob Fletcher's 72 means he is no longer sharing last place with Don January, whose 75 leaves him at rock bottom...

1970 TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS at La Costa Resort & Spa - RESULT
The 'guest' players came away empty handed for the 4th time this season, with Ian McKinley performing very well to finish with a 69 to earn a tie for 2nd place, a full 7 strokes behind the eventual winner. Hans Kunok (73) and Randy Grant (71) ended the event sharing 14th spot, a respectable effort, while Nate Arteezy concluded the tourney with a 75 to finish 30th. Bob Fletcher's best round of the week, a 70, saw him one shot further back in a tie for 31st, and Mark Lipping, the tour's leading money winner, slumped to a 78 and a disappointing share of 34th.
The winner was Frank Beard who actually also won this event back in 1967, but the springboard to victory this year was his second round - a 64, easily the best of the week, with nine birds. In scoring the 64, Beard used 12 putts on each nine, and for the round he was 12 under par on the greens. He commented "I wasn't thinking about anything after the first six birdies. Under those circumstances you just hit the ball, find it and hit it again. It charges you up. Everything seems automatic. I know I'm a good putter, but even I find this display hard to believe."
Frank Beard

1970 BYRON NELSON GOLF CLASSIC at TPC Four Seasons - Round 1
So far the 'guest' players appear not to have had many problems. Bob Fletcher's 66 gave him a share of the lead with Arnold Palmer while, a single shot behind after carding a 67, Mark Lipping also found himself in illustrious company, in a tie for 3rd with Jack Nicklaus. After a solid opening 69 Ian McKinley ended the day sharing 9th place, and Paul Ledoucer came home with a 73, not a bad effort in the difficult weather.

1970 BYRON NELSON GOLF CLASSIC at TPC Four Seasons - Round 2
Bob Fletcher now has sole possession of 1st place after his 68 today, but Ian McKinley and Mark Lipping are lurking with intent just 2 strokes away in a tie for 3rd. Ian improved on his opening round by carding a fine 67, while Mark recorded a more than competent 69. These are the only 'guest' players to have completed two rounds, as far as I am aware, at the time of writing, hopefully the weekend will see a couple more joining the chase...

1970 BYRON NELSON GOLF CLASSIC at TPC Four Seasons - Round 4
Roger Instell had previously only completed one event this season, the Greater Jacksonville Open, where he finished tied 74th. This week he won at a canter, with 7 strokes seperating him from 2nd-placed Mark Lipping. Roger started the week well with a 67, but his victory was really down to his middle two rounds - a great 64 in Round 2 and an even better 63, the best of the tourney, in Round 3. He concluded proceedings with a solid 68 to pocket the winner's cheque. Mark, although shooting under par in every round, wasn't quite at his best but still had a decent pay-day. Ian McKinley finished 2 shots behind Mark and he, too, had four under-par rounds to his credit. Any winning hopes Bob Fletcher may have had disappeared when he slumped to a 75 in the penultimate round, but an even par 70 today was enough to earn a share of 11th.

Event 18 - 1970 HOUSTON CHAMPIONS INTERNATIONAL at the Golf Club of Houston - Round 1
Domination! The guest players currently hold the top 4 positions - but will it last? Bob Fletcher has again made a good start by firing a 64, and he is closely followed by Mark Lipping who also impressed with a 66. In a tie for 3rd spot are Ian McKinley and Nate Arteezy after they both shot a 68. The course is playing well and the greens seem to be comparatively straightforward with no extreme slopes observed yet...

Event 18 - 1970 HOUSTON CHAMPIONS INTERNATIONAL at the Golf Club of Houston - Round 2
Bob Fletcher's 68 was good enough to keep him in top spot, but his lead has been halved to just one stroke by Ian McKinley who looks in fine fettle after firing the round of the day, a sparkling 65. Mark Lipping's level par 71 means he is now five shots off the pace, but certainly not out of contention. Randy Grant improved on his opening 74 by carding a 73, with putting his main problem. Last week's tournament winner, Roger Instell, appears to be suffering from a hangover as he has only been able to record rounds of 75 and 74 so far, so it's fair to say he won't be adding to his trophy cabinet this week...

Event 18 - 1970 HOUSTON CHAMPIONS INTERNATIONAL at the Golf Club of Houston - Round 3
At the time of writing this only 3 'guest' players had completed 3 rounds, but all 3 are positioned at the top of the leaderboard. And we have a new leader in Ian McKinley whose 69 today has carved out a three-stroke lead for him going into the final round. Overnight leader Bob Fletcher again experienced a third round slump as he could only put together a disappointing 73, while Mark Lipping's second 71 of the tourney leaves him three behind Bob and six adrift of Ian, meaning he probably has too much to do to add another title to his collection...

Event 18 - 1970 HOUSTON CHAMPIONS INTERNATIONAL at the Golf Club of Houston - Round 4
At last he's done it!! Ian McKinley finally delivered to claim his first victory of the season! And well deserved it was too, Ian being the only player to break 70 in all four rounds, and his closing 69 was just good enough. Bob Fletcher made a sterling effort to catch Ian in the final round, and it was in the balance right up until the 18th, but Bob's approach bounced into the lake and his winning hopes found a watery grave. Even so, his 68 was a fine attempt. Mark Lipping had made a bright start to the week but could only follow it with three level par rounds. However, his 71 today was still low enough to finish in 3rd spot. Randy Grant had a tough week, carding 74, 73, and 74 in the first three rounds, but today was particularly hard and he could only sign off with a 79. Thanks to those who played, and finished, the event, let's hope next week will be just as much fun...

Event 19 - 1970 COLONIAL NATIONAL INVITATIONAL at Colonial C.C. - Round 1
Looks like the players had it relatively easy in Houston last week compared to Colonial this week. Colonial is a much tighter course with more difficult greens, both of which more than compensate for its' lack of length. Last week's victor, Ian McKinley, scrambled home with a 74 under his belt, a score only good enough to share 71st place. Randy Grant fought gamely in his round but a 77 was all he had to show for his efforts. Bob Fletcher played quite well and was rewarded with a level par 70, leaving him tied for 28th and four strokes off the lead. It's going to be a tough week...

Event 19 - 1970 COLONIAL NATIONAL INVITATIONAL at Colonial C.C. - Round 2
A measure of how tough Colonial is playing this week is how far down the leaderboard you have to scan to find the 'guest' players! After a nightmare 85 in his opening round, Mark Lipping recovered his composure to card a level par 70 today, but remains in last place. Randy Grant also improved on his first round, carding a 75, which puts him three strokes ahead of Mark. Bob Fletcher also shot a 75, a score he was disappointed with after a solid opening round of 70. The leading 'guest' player at the moment is Ian McKinley whose 70 places him a shot ahead of Bob, and although that only leaves him in a tie for 44th, he is a recoverable 8 strokes adrift of the leader.

Event 19 - 1970 COLONIAL NATIONAL INVITATIONAL at Colonial C.C. - Round 3
Randy Grant had his best round so far this week, a 71, but still leaves him way back in a tie for 75th. Mark Lipping was more like his usual self but even his 66 only elevated him into a share of 70th. Ian McKinley, with a 68, and Bob Fletcher, with a 67, are the leading 'guest' players and although they are only in a tie for 18th place, they still have an outside chance of the win as they are seven strokes behind the leader, Lee Trevino...

Event 19 - 1970 COLONIAL NATIONAL INVITATIONAL at Colonial C.C. - Round 4
Once again the guest players came away empty-handed. Colonial certainly bared its' teeth as only 6 of the PGA Tour pros broke par over the four rounds. The winner was HOMERO BLANCAS, his first tour victory since winning the 1966 Seattle-Everett Open.
Blancas put it all together to edge out Lee Trevino and Gene Littler by a single shot. Happily, for Romero, a tip from Trevino helped immeasurably. "I told Homero he should move through the ball faster from the waist down," said Trevino. Blancas did and reported thet the tip helped him hit a slight fade instead of a hook. Said Trevino "I'm proud of Homero, but my little lesson cost me about $12,000!"
Randy Grant, 84 today (score not age!), and Mark Lipping with a 79, both had weeks they will want to forget in a hurry. Ian McKinley's 76 left him in a tie for 44th place, which meant that the 'best of the guests' was Bob Fletcher who concluded the event with a 74 to finish in a share of 34th spot.
This week's winner, HOMERO BLANCAS
