Round 3
The PGA pro's have been brushed aside by the guests' superlative play this week - and we have a new leader with one round left to play. Roger Instell leads by 2 after rounds of 66, 61 and 62, and he has put himself in a great position to win his first PGA Tour event. Bob Fletcher put together a 66 and he, in turn, leads by 2 strokes from Mark Lipping who finished today with a threatening 64. Juan Aetee's 68 puts him 9 shots behind Roger and, although his winning chances look slim, he is definitely in line for another substantial pay-out. Ian McKinley carded a 70 to tie for 9th but he may be saving himself for the first major of the season next week...

Round 4
Of the three most likely winners after the third round had been played out, it transpired that not one of them won! Tournament leader at the start of the day Roger Instell started the final round but mysteriously failed to finish, leader for the first two days Bob Fletcher slumped to a 69 and dropped to 3rd spot, while form player Mark Lipping leapfrogged Bob into 2nd place with a 66 but still finished 3 strokes behind the winner. That was JUAN AETEE who was red hot today and his incredible round of 58 gave him his first PGA career win!! Ian McKinley scored under par in all four rounds but only finished tied for 8th, but I know for a fact he has made a space in his wardrobe for a green jacket so maybe he is saving his best golf for Augusta...
Not surprisingly Juan's 58 was the best round of the week. Bob Fletcher's 61 was the best effort of the opening day, while Mark Lipping's 63 was equal best with Gary Player in Round 2. Mark's 64 in Round 3 was also the best of that round. This result means that it is now very difficult to predict who will do what in the first Major of the season, but that only adds to the event's fascination...

THE MASTERS - Round 1 leaderboard so far...
The PGA pro's have had the better start this week, Tommy Aaron leading the way with an opening 68, while the best placed 'guest' player is Mark Lipping who is tied for 9th with Jack Nicklaus and Frank Beard after carding a sedate 71. Bob Fletcher was not unhappy with his level par round of 72, but poor Ian McKinley had a terrible start to the event and, try as he might, didn't manage to put right the early damage to his round, having to settle for an 81 and last place.

The MASTERS - Round 2 leaderboard
Ian McKinley put his nightmare opening round behind him to shoot an impressive 69, on of the best of the day, and a score that sees him tied for 47th with six PGA pro's. Juan Aetee also improved on his first round score, carding a 71 which lifts him into a share of 20th with a whole host of professionals including Tom Weiskopf and the legendary Jack Nicklaus, but Juan is eight strokes adrift of the leader so has a lot of work to do. Mark Lipping, with a 74, and Roger Instell, with a 73, lost ground today but are definitely not out of it, being tied 14th and tied 10th respectively. Perhaps the surprise of the day came from Bob Fletcher who produced an incident-packed round of 66, the best of the day so far, and a score that elevates him into first place by a single shot. It's going to be an intriguing weekend!

The MASTERS - Round 3 Leaderboard
The brutal weather today made Augusta even tougher than usual and really it was a question of survival and damage limitation. Having said that, Ian McKinley's 68 was nothing short of miraculous!! Oh what might have been if he hadn't had a terrible opening round. Ian has hauled himself up into a tie for 20th with, among others like Tom Weiskopf, Mark Lipping who came in with a creditable 73 - probably not what he was hoping for but it could have been far worse! Roger Instell is in a share of 14th spot after playing well for a level par 72, while last week's event winner, Juan Aetee, won't be adding another trophy after his disappointing 80 today. Nate Arteezy is making his first appearance of the season and after rounds of 76 and 71 he wasn't doing too badly, but the conditions beat him up badly today and his 84 sees him firmly entrenched at the foot of the leaderboard. At the time of writing halfway leader Bob Fletcher had not completed his round and it will be very interesting to see how he handles the weather conditions today...

Round 3 Update
The leader after Round 2, Bob Fletcher, has completed his third round and now goes into the final round still holding first place, albeit by a single stroke. He was very happy after carding a very good 69 and has a great chance of claiming his first tour win - and where better to do it than Augusta!!?

1970 MASTERS - Final Round
We had high drama on the 18th green as the tournament came to a thrilling conclusion. With Billy Casper and Gene Littler already in the clubhouse as joint leaders, Bob Fletcher knew that even a bogey on the 18th would be enough to clinch victory, but the golf gods had other ideas. Bob proceeded to FOUR-putt for a triple-bogey and a round of 73, leaving him shaking his head in disbelief that a green jacket had been cruelly snatched from his grasp after he'd worked so hard to place himself in a winning position! He had to settle for a share of 3rd place with Gary Player. Pre-event favourite Mark Lipping signed off with his second 74 of the week, placing him in a tie for 24th. Ian McKinley had clawed his way back to respectability with some fine play in Rounds 2 and 3, but today the tank was empty and his closing 78 left him in the nether regions of the leaderboard and a share of 40th.
So the guest players come away from an event empty-handed for a change, PGA pro Billy Casper beating Gene Littler by five strokes in an 18-hole play-off. Peculiarly I noticed that the winner's prize money was only $25,000, less than several of the standard 1970 PGA Tour events, and I suspect that perhaps a lack of sponsorship may have been the reason.
Best rounds: Round 1 - Tommy Aaron 68, Round 2 - Bob Fletcher 66, Round 3 - Charles Coody 67, Round 4 - Miller Barber 65, also the best of the tournament.

Event 15 - 1970 Greater New Orleans Open
Round 1 - The TPC Louisiana course is providing one or two problems this week. Apart from the windy conditions, the subtle borrows on the greens are causing some players to scratch their heads. Joint leaders are PGA pro's Arnold Palmer and Tommy Aaron who shot a couple of sparkling 64's. So far the best guest player is Bob Fletcher who hit a solid 65, but Mark Lipping isn't far behind after an opening 67. Roger Instell and Ian McKinley won't be too displeased with their 69's, while 'newbie' Randy Grant had a tough time on his way to posting an 84.

1970 Greater New Orleans Open - Round 2
Arnold Palmer now has the outright lead after his 67 today, while the best-placed 'guest' player is now Mark Lipping whose 66 puts him in a tie for 3rd spot, just 2 shots off the pace. Bob Fletcher's 70 drops him into a share of 7th place, a further 2 strokes back from Mark. Ian McKinley's 72 leaves him a long way back in a tie for 44th, and, although Randy Grant played a lot better today to card a 75, he is still almost guaranteed to finish last.

1970 Greater New Orleans Open - Round 3
Big changes on the leaderboard after Round 3! Mark Lipping has gone from being 2 shots behind the pacesetter to now leading the tourney himself by 5 strokes! While the majority of players had a hard time out on the course, Mark surged through to top spot with his second 67 of the event, and now looks good to add another trophy to his growing collection. Bob Fletcher's 72 means he trails Mark by 7 but can still achieve a good finish, while Ian McKinley's 71 sees him remain in mid-leaderboard. Randy Grant battled gamely on to record a 81 but he will get better I'm certain...

1970 Greater New Orleans Open - Round 4
Gary Player had recorded the best round of the week, a scintilating 63, in Round 2, and he rediscovered that form in the final round, coming in with a fighting 65, the best effort of the final day. That put tournament leader Mark Lipping, who himself had posted the best score in Round 3, a 67, under a little bit of pressure, but he held on by shooting a 69 to claim victory by just 2 strokes from the legendary South African. Ian McKinley signed off with his best round of the event, a 67, to finish in a tie for 12th, while Bob Fletcher limped home with a 75, still suffering with putting problems, which left him in a tie for 32nd. Randy Grant, to his credit, never gave up and hit a closing 82, but I know Randy will be back with much better scores soon...

1970 TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS at La Costa Resort & Spa - Round 1
PGA Tour pro Gary Player leads the way after his opening 68, but none of the 'guest' players could break par today. Bob Fletcher fell foul of the wild weather and his 80 has virtually destroyed any winning hopes he may have had. Tour money leader Mark Lipping stumbled in with a 76, Ian McKinley could only shoot a 74, while Randy Grant and Nate Arteezy managed a pair of 73's to keep their interests alive...

1970 TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS at La Costa Resort & Spa - Round 2
Frank Beard has taken over at the head of the leaderboard courtesy of an extraordinary round of 64, giving him a 3-stroke lead over his nearest challenger, Tony Jacklin. The best positioned 'guest' player is Ian McKinley at level par after a hard-working 70 today, but he'll have to work even harder if he is to bridge the 10-shot deficit over the weekend. The returning Hans Kunok matched Ian's 70 to improve on his opening 76, and Randy Grant finds himself in a tie for 25th after carding a 74 today. Nate Arteezy's 76 leaves him in sole possession of 30th spot, just one stroke ahead of Mark Lipping who recorded a 74. Bob Fletcher is finding La Costa difficult to handle and his 76 means he now shares last place with Don January. It's beginning to look as if the guest players will come away empty handed this week, but we shall soon see...
