Round 3 - Previous event leader Grier Jones had a horrendous time today, carding a 76 to drop right out of contention. He's replaced at the top of the leaderboard by Les Souter who fired the best round of the tourney so far, a brilliant 63. But only one stroke behind lurks Hans Kunok after he impressed with a 65. We have a fascinating situation now because with one round left to play it looks quite likely that either Les or Hans will enjoy a win this week, as they have a four-stroke cushion over their next rival. And whichever one does take the title will also win the Winter Trophy, awarded for the highest money-winner over the first ten events. The 'guest' players are dominating the top positions on the leaderboard, and in third spot is Mark Lipping after he shot a fine 66. Juan Aetee recorded a disastrous 74, ten shots worse than he took in Round 2, but still holds fourth place. Then Bob Fletcher is tied 6th after a disappointing level par round today, while Charlie Roberts is tied 12th after also shooting a 71. Ian McKinley dropped back when he carded a 75, and Terry Baldwin's 71 leaves him in a tie for 23rd. Carl Bishop appears to be having a hard time but that is only because of the rule that a player in his first event has a handicap of +4 applied to his scores. This rule will be revised before Event 11 so watch out for details of the change on our Forum...

Round 4What a fantastic end to this event and to the first quarter of the 1970 season! This turned into a real nail-biter and went right down to the wire. The 'guests' dominated the top of the leaderboard, probably mainly due to the weather not being quite as harsh as usual. In his first full tourney Carl Bishop ended it in a tie for 77th place, but only because of the +4 handicap rule for players in their first event, otherwise he may well have finished under par. Carl's handicap will now be adjusted for the next tourney. In a tie for 18th was Terry Baldwin who concluded his week by finishing at level par. Rumour has it that this was Terry's farewell tourney and, if so, we wish him well. Tied for 9th with Ray Floyd was Charlie Roberts who, surprisingly, only shot two under-par rounds. Ian McKinley started the week promisingly, shooting a 66 on the opening day, the equal best score for Round 1 with Tommy Jacobs. But Ian suffered a mid-tourney slump and he ended up at 8 under par and in 7th spot. In 5th was Bob Fletcher who saved his best score, a fine 66, for the closing round which helped him to 10 under par. Four strokes in front of Bob was Mark Lipping in 4th place who played consistently well throughout. In 3rd, two shots ahead of Mark, was Juan Aetee, who will be bitterly regretting his third round 74 which effectively cost him a great chance of winning this week. A small consolation is the fact that on the final day he carded a superb 63, the equal best of the event, in a valiant attempt to catch the two leaders. Les Souter was the leader going into today's round, greatly assisted by his own almost faultless 63 in Round 3, and a closing 66 looked to be good enough to claim his third tournament win so far - but Hans Kunok had his own agenda. With his scores improving round by round, including the best in Round 2, a very good 66, he stood on the first tee one stroke behind Les. And when he walked off the 18th green he had turned the tables to finish one in front and grab his second tour title of the season!! A memorable 64 claimed the win, but I think he had an idea this was going to be his week after an incident in Round 3. He tried to send his drive over the water on the tricky 14th and suspected the worst when it was falling short. However, it pitched on the nearside bank and bounced over the water to land safely on the other side by inches!! I will update the Earnings Table later, so you can check out who has won the WINTER TROPHY for the most earnings over the first ten events of the season...

Well the first quarter of the 1970 PGA Tour season is over and we are about to enjoy a 1-week gap before the second quarter begins. The question is 'who won the Winter Trophy for the most earnings over the first ten tournaments?' Les Souter was the hot favourite, having won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the Tucson Open, but even though he finished in 2nd place in last week's Monsanto Open, he was just edged out by HANS KUNOK, who added the Monsanto Open title to the Andy Williams San Diego Open title he won earlier this season. Unfortunately for Les, both of Hans' tourney wins offered bigger prize money and that was the difference at the end of the day. So well done to Hans for winning the WINTER TROPHY, the margin being a slender $611. The season will recommence next week at the Greater Jacksonville Open, to be hosted by the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Florida.

We're back after a one-week rest, and Event 11, the start of the Spring Swing, sees us at Florida's Ritz-Carlton Hotel for the GREATER JACKSONVILLE OPEN.
Round 1 - Mark Lipping looks eager to add to the Doral-Eastern Open title he won a few weeks ago. An opening round of 67 sees him lead the field by one stroke while Bob Fletcher's 70 means he is well placed after the opening day. Roger Instell, with an adequate 71, and Ian McKinley, with a slightly disappointing 72, complete the guest players' scores so far, but the event is still in its infancy...

1970 Greater Jacksonville Open - Round 2
After a sensational round of 61 Mark Lipping has carved out a virtually unassailable lead of 9 strokes over his closest challengers, PGA pro's Lee Trevino and Bobby Mitchell. Juan Aetee lies in 5th spot after rounds of 70 and 69, and he looks a good bet for another nice 'little earner'. Bob Fletcher's 71 today leaves him in an 8-way tie for 8th with the likes of Jack Nicklaus, while a shot further back in a tie for 16th is Ian McKinley after he improved on his opening round by carding a 70. It appears to be a race for 2nd place now...

1970 Greater Jacksonville Open - Round 3
Runaway leader Mark Lipping showed no sign of taking his foot off the accelerator as his impressive 63 today extended his advantage over the field to 15 strokes!! Floundering in Mark's wake is Juan Aetee who recorded a respectable 67, his best effort of the event so far. Tied for 3rd we have Bob Fletcher and Carl Bishop, with rounds of 68 and 66 respectively, and this pair will be attempting to bridge the 3-stroke gap between themselves and Juan on the final day. Ian McKinley's ailing health had a lot to do with his performance, and a 74 was the outcome. Roger Instell finds himself in mid-leaderboard after a 73 today, and he'll be looking for a final round push to maximise his earnings from this tourney...

1970 Greater Jacksonville Open - FINAL LEADERBOARD
There were no real surprises today as tournament leader Mark Lipping finally slowed up to card a 72, a score that was good enough to maintain his 15-stroke advantage. Juan Aetee also recorded a 72 to finish second, a shot ahead of PGA Pro's Dale Douglass and Don January, the latter shooting the best score of the round, a well-worked 66, no mean feat in today's difficult conditions. Bob Fletcher suffered a horrid round, his card so full of red numbers it resembled a bloodbath, and a 77 saw him slip down to a tie for 12th spot. Roger Instell experienced an even worse fate, a nightmare 85, which saw him drop like a stone to a share of 74th place with Marty Fleckman. Unfortunately Ian McKinley wasn't able to finish due to ill health and we hope he recovers soon and wish him well.
Winner Mark Lipping can put his victory down to his stunning performance over the first three rounds, his scores of 67, 61 and 63 being the best on all three days. Will anyone be able to stop him acquiring a third title of the season next week in the National Airlines Open?!

Event 12, the 1970 NATIONAL AIRLINES OPEN, being played at The Conservatory Golf Club, Florida
Round 1 - The three 'guests' who have started so far all fared pretty well on the opening day. Bob Fletcher's 69 sees him tied for 11th with the likes of Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino. Mark Lipping shot a 68 to finish in a six-way tie for 5th, but the best performance was produced by veteran Ian McKinley, who belied his recent health problems by carding a praiseworthy 66. That puts him in a tie for second, because the best round of the day, so far, came from Bob Menne who hit a stunning 64. With so much water in play on the course, however, anything could still happen...

Round 2 - Ian McKinley improved on his first round exploits by coming in with a stunning 64 which gave him the outright lead by 3 strokes over PGA Pro Bob Menne, who only shot a 69 today. Roger Instell was a late finisher on the opening day but ended it as joint leader having fired a stellar 64. Today he only managed a 70 and, as a result, he now sits in 3rd spot, 4 shots off the pace. Mark Lipping and Bob Fletcher didn't have things their own way in this round and a couple of even par 72's saw them fall away from the leading bunch. Juan Aetee began the event with a reasonable 69, but a lacklustre 74 today sees him unusually near the foot of the leaderboard. It's still anyone's tournament...

Round 3
Ian McKinley's 71 today was enough to maintain his top position, but his lead has been cut to just 2 strokes now. PGA Pro's Bob Menne and Lee Trevino lurk menacingly on Ian's shoulder ready to take advantage of any slip-ups in the concluding round, as does Mark Lipping, the tour's in-form player, who made a move by firing the round of the week, a brilliant 63. Roger Instell stays 4 shots off the pace after he matched Ian's 71, a score also posted by Bob Fletcher who stays well down the field. The surprise round of the day, and not in a good way, came from Juan Aetee when he stumbled into the scorer's tent with a catastrophic 86!! Reports have been received that excessive visits to the beer tents may be responsible, but this is yet to be confirmed...

Round 4 - FINAL LEADERBOARDAfter leading for the first three days it looked like Ian McKinley was all set to finally pop the cork on that bottle of champagne to celebrate his first tour win, but once again he was to be disappointed as MARK LIPPING surged ahead of him with a fine final round of 66 to grab his third title of the season by three shots. Ian's 71 proved to be good enough for second place, but nobody remembers the runner-up do they?! Bob Fletcher's closing 72 meant he had a week to forget, finishing in mid-leaderboard, while Juan Aetee's 70 left him in a tie for last place and scratching his head about his Round 3 performance.

Event 13 - 1970 GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN, hosted by Sedgefield Country Club
Round 1 - Everyone's eyes were on Mark Lipping to see if he could make a good start in his attempt to win his third consecutive title, and he made a satisfactory start to his quest by carding a 66 to leave him in a tie for 6th. Carl Bishop fared even better by firing a majestic 64 to tie for 2nd spot alongside Arnold Palmer and Tommy Aaron. But even this trio were left three shots off the early lead as Bob Fletcher surprised everyone, including himself, by posting an incredible opening round of 61. Still looking for his first overdue win, it looks like Ian McKinley will have to wait another week at least as he opened up with a rather average 69. It could be another intriguing week...

Round 2
First round leader Bob Fletcher didn't reach the heady heights of the opening day, but he scored well enough with a 64 to remain as the pacesetter. In fact, he extended his lead from 3 to 4 strokes as Carl Bishop hit a 65 and PGA pro's Arnold Palmer and Tommy Aaron fell back with rounds of 67 and 69 respectively. Mark Lipping edged a little closer by shooting a hot 63, while Ian McKinley improved on his Day 1 score by carding a 67 to creep up the leaderboard. This one will go right to the wire I think...
