Event 32 - 1970 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Cedar Ridge - Round 3
First round leader Roger Instell has paid dearly for that fine opening score, carding a 76 in Round 2 and another 76 today, leaving him halfway down the leaderboard and completely out of the running. Bob Fletcher's birdie-free 74 saw him drop further back also, while Barney Buss's second 73 of the event surely means he, too, is out of contention. Hans Kunok fought his way back to the clubhouse with a creditable 71, but a score that saw him slip further behind the pacesetter. After shooting under par for the first two rounds Ian McKinley's hopes of repeating that feat soon disappeared and the resulting round of 73 would see him lose his overnight lead and slide back to 4th spot. Five strokes clear of Ian, and the new tournament leader, is Mark Lipping whose super 67 means he has a one-shot advantage over PGA professional Dave Stockton. But with the conditions on the final day forecast to be the toughest of the week, anything could happen in Round 4...

Event 32 - 1970 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Cedar Ridge - Round 4
The final day conditions were nothing short of brutal, the worst they could possibly be probably. Roger Instell's 77 was, unsurprisingly, his worst score of the week, and left him in a lowly tie for 52nd place. At least he had the small consolation of registering the best round of the opening day. After the front nine Bob Fletcher looked to be heading for his worst round of the season, but he rallied well on the back to post his third 74 of the event, a score that earned him a share of 34th spot. Hans Kunok also carded a 77, finally succumbing to this tough course, but generally did well to finish tied 20th. Ian McKinley, already a Major winner this season, started today five strokes off the lead - and his up and down 75 left him six shots behind the eventual winner. Overnight leader Mark Lipping had excelled in the previous two rounds and must have been feeling confident about grabbing his first Major title - but it wasn't to be. Everything seemed to conspire against him and his closing 75 meant he finished a single stroke short of the eventual victor. And that was PGA pro Dave Stockton, whose battling 73 gave him the title and left him as the only player to break par in the event - that's how tough it was at Cedar Ridge!!
We move on to the TPC Boston for the AVCO Classic where scoring will hopefully be a little easier!!

By virtue of his runner-up finish in the last Major of the season, Mark Lipping has moved into first place in the Autumn Cup standings. But with another eleven events to be played it is still anyone's trophy to win...

Event 33 - 1970 AVRO Classic at TPC Boston - Round 1
What a lovely course this is! And it seems to be less stressless than most somehow. Anyway, that appears not to have been the case for Roger Instell who could only muster a 73, and especially Ian McKinley who limped in with a less than impressive 75. Hans Kunok is handily placed in a share of 14th after his steady 70, while Bob Fletcher was almost ecstatic when he shot a sparkling 67, mainly thanks to birdies on the last three holes. Randy Grant has been grappling with his game for quite a while now, but judging from today's performance he appears to have turned a corner. All the opening day kudos went to him after his superb 65 placed him at the top of the leaderboard!

Event 33 - 1970 AVRO Classic at TPC Boston - Round 2
At the time of writing this only three guests have completed the first two rounds, so the current leaderboard is likely to change somewhat I suspect. As it stands, Ian McKinley just can't find any good form at all, and even though he improved on his first round score, his 73 today sees him firmly entrenched at the bottom of the field. Bob Fletcher also improved on his opening effort, shooting a fine 66 today, but that score was totally eclipsed by a sensational round from Hans Kunok. Hans rediscovered the form that won him the Winter Trophy earlier in the season, and the result was a stunning 59, the Holy Grail of golf scores, which transformed him into the new tournament leader by four strokes from Bob. But I think there may well be a few more surprises in store...

Event 33 - 1970 AVRO Classic at TPC Boston - Round 3
Overnight leader Hans Kunok is still out on the course attempting to consolidate his position, so things could likely change. As it is, Ian McKinley revelled in the dry, windy weather to shoot the best score of the round so far, a splendid 66, which although propelled him up the leaderboard, still leaves him way behind the frontrunners. A level par 72 from Bob Fletcher saw him slip to third place, four strokes behind Randy Grant whose 70 today keeps him very much in contention. Late starter Mark Lipping added to previous rounds of 63 and 70 with a fine 67 to lead by a single shot. So going into the final day it looks like any one of three or four guests could still win this tournament...

Event 33 - 1970 AVRO Classic at TPC Boston - Round 4
The windy conditions and sluggish greens seemed to cause a lot of consternation today. Ian McKinley finished an unmemorable week with a 71 which saw him end the tourney with a share of 22nd place. Bob Fletcher's putting woes continued but at least his 70 was good enough to grab 3rd spot. Hans Kunok was looking in good shape with five holes left of his third round but, inexplicably, he failed to complete 18 holes and unfortunately was disqualified. Overnight leader Mark Lipping shot his worst round of the week, a 71, which left the door open for his main competitor, Randy Grant. Randy's game has improved no end over recent weeks and he took full advantage to card a closing 68, a score that provided him with his maiden victory by two strokes!
Next week we are in New Jersey and Ballyowen Golf Club for the Dow Jones Open Invitational, where the largest purse of the season will be on offer - but you will need to bring your best putting game because there are some challenging greens to take on there...

Event 34 - 1970 Dow Jones Open Invitational at Ballyowen Golf Club - Round 1
The course at Ballyowen can be difficult if your putting is not up to scratch. That appears to have been the case for Barney Buss, winner of the Westchester Classic a few weeks ago, who recorded a traumatic 76 today. Bob Fletcher and Mark Lipping would have preferred lower scores than their respective rounds of 71 and 70, while Ian McKinley would have been pleased with his opening 69. Randy Grant won his first event last week in the AVCO Golf Classic, and he carried that form over to this week by shooting a superb 63 to lead the field by three strokes at close of play. The question is can he maintain the high standard of play he is currently producing?

Event 34 - 1970 Dow Jones Open Invitational at Ballyowen Golf Club - Round 2
Barney Buss's problems continued in this round and a lacklustre 78 was the result, leaving him trailing the rest of the field by a considerable margin. Ian McKinley also found the slower greens not to his liking and he could only assemble a disappointing 74, positioning him in the middle of the leaderboard but some distance off the pace. Bob Fletcher's 70 was an improvement on his opening day effort but he has a lot of work to do over the weekend if he is to threaten the leading group. Olly Jose-Maria also carded a 70 which, added to his first round 67, sees him well-placed to make a charge over the last two rounds. Randy Grant was the overnight leader by three strokes - after his 70 today that had not changed, and I get the feeling that it will take something special to dislodge him from the top spot...

Event 34 - 1970 Dow Jones Open Invitational at Ballyowen Golf Club - Round 3
Well, what an eventful round this was!! The whole complexion of the tournament changed in the space of 18 holes. Sadly, that wasn't the case for Barney Buss, who continued to grapple with Ballyowen but at least broke par today by carding a 71. Ian McKinley also produced his best round of the week so far, a fine 67, that helped him rise up to a tie for 9th spot - but still far behind the leaders. Bob Fletcher's 68 also saw him upwardly mobile, lifting him into a share of 6th place, a shot ahead of Ian, but still with no chance of winning. Guests now occupy the top three positions on the leaderboard. Olly Jose-Maria now lies in 3rd spot after a very good 66, but he only has an outside chance of the title. One stroke in front of Olly is Randy Grant whose 69 was nowhere near low enough to hang on to his overnight lead. That was because Mark Lipping, whose opening rounds of 70 and 69 had not promised anything special, produced something extraordinary today - a stellar round of 58 which included an ace, three eagles, and even two bogeys!! Mark takes a five-shot lead into the final round and is a hot favourite to win his 6th event of the season...

Hi Bassman. There is no restriction on what swing you can use, or even what clubs to use, but there are certain gameplay restrictions. Here's a screenshot that applies to all events on the tour...
We also use our own handicap system which is based on the last 12 tour rounds played - and which appears to work very well. Round conditions tend to be harsh because I have to try to ensure that members' scores are around the same level as the real professionals' scores from the actual tournament. That's probably the most difficult bit to get right!!
Also, PLAYPGATOUR is only a TGC2019 society - at the moment. I plan to transfer it over to 2K21 at the end of this year when our current 1970 season will have ended.

Event 34 - 1970 Dow Jones Open Invitational at Ballyowen Golf Club - Round 4
Gusting winds and rain provided today's scenario so the players had a tough time to look forward to. Barney Buss signed off with a 74, leaving him rock bottom of the leaderboard and some urgent practice to squeeze into his schedule. Bob Fletcher was more than pleased with his closing 69 which rewarded him with 7th place, a single stroke adrift of Ian McKinley whose fighting 67 was the equal best score of the final round and helped him end the week in a share of 5th spot. Olly Jose-Maria secured 3rd place by shooting a 71, which was his worst score of the event. Mark Lipping held a 5-shot lead going into this final round but he was unable to repeat the magical form that saw him register a fantastic 58 in Round 3, and his 73 today was always going to leave the door slightly ajar. Randy Grant took full advantage of Mark's disappointing round and even a bogey on the final hole could not prevent him from notching up his second tour victory in as many weeks. Randy's 67 edged out Mark by one shot, winning the highest purse of the season so far in the process!!

Earnings after the Dow Jones Open Invitational...
Randy takes the lead in the quest for the Autumn Cup - but there are plenty of events still to play.
Mark extends his lead in the overall season winnings table - and he will be very difficult to catch now!

Event 35 - 1970 Greater Hartford Open Invitational at TPC River Highlands - Round 1
The quick greens are this course's main defence and they played a major part in the scoring today. Putting is arguably the worst part of Bob Fletcher's game and predictably he struggled, eventually coming in with a 75. Event winner for the past two weeks, Randy Grant, didn't fare much better, carding a 73 and making a hat-trick of wins unlikely. Mark Lipping and Ian McKinley produced a brace of 69's and even Ian, who normally enjoys fast greens, found them more than challenging today. This duo would end the day four strokes behind Hans Kunok, the opening day leader, whose fine 65 reminded us of his early-season form when he captured the Winter Trophy.
