Steamshovel Golf Club was really my first original design... original only in the sense that it isn't a real place. It employed templates and a landlocked routing inspired by Chicago Golf Club. It's changed slightly over the years, but I really have not taken advantage of some of the newer design features added since the original TGC. Many of the tricks employed by other designers will also be used, specifically "scorched earth". Border planting will be completely redone and the only thing that still stands on the course is the brick wall and unfilled splines.
I have officially started a major restoration or renovation or whatever you want to call it. The layout will remain unchanged. Some templates may be switched or added inside the routing. My plan is to renovate 1 hole a day.
For those who've played it over the years: Any suggestions or ideas? I can already tell you that #1 will become a maiden and the principal's nose and double plateau will be united on the same hole (as it should be). #15 will become a true Leven and the green complex and surrounding bunkers will be dialed up to guard some pins.
Not sure if I will change the name or not. We'll see in a month or so...
I will post the results of the work each day that a hole is completed.

No suggestions off top of my head but really looking forward to the renovation I love these old school designs... I am trying to design one myself atm but am struggling mightily, any suggestions?

This is a good question lol I'd say where to start, I've practiced building some greens and bunkers so I'd say getting started like routing issues and imagining what I want to do... Then sculpting is definitely still tricky I have gotten better w practice but I see clubs like enos club or your template designs and the angles and sculpting are so clean and smooth which I think is really necessary for the parkland template designs.

In my head id like to do a raynor/MacDonald fictional course on the northeast coast either long islandish or maybe more south carolina coast as I can't think of a great ocean course in the template style in that region

Both stunners. Not quite ocean but they're a great jumping-off point. Raynor does infinity greens so well. In-game, a good reference point would be Charleston Hall by joegolferg - don't believe it's ported yet but this look could be great with the new trees we have.

Another great one - not Raynor but same aesthetic - is the new Plantation course at Sea Island.

Like when it comes to doing some of the geometric shapes are you splining or using brushes? Rn doing good fairways in this style is really difficult for me. I don't understand how to get the rough around the bunkers how I want them and I struggle with making my fairways the proper shape. Like a good example would be how to do a principals nose bunker. How do I get the rough around the bunkers?

How do I get the rough around the bunkers? To get the rough around the bunkers placed in a fairway spline, don't fill the fairway spline using the spline function so that your bunkers are within the unfilled fairway spline. Then spline or brush heavy rough around the principals nose bunkers. Then carefully fill the fairway spline with the brush. It takes time.

This is exactly what I'm working on - what I hope is an inspired blend rather than forced mishmash of lowcountry coastal and classical architecture as embodied by the obvious Kiawah, but the less obvious Yeamans Hall, CC of Charleston, Chechessee Creek and a few others. I know all designers want their work to resonate, and some can be competitive, but I hope I can just turn out something good that people enjoy. Already have most of the holes done and will hopefully be done in a week or two if I can figure out the salt marsh planting. Anyway, would love any suggestions and to see other renditions, too. Just grow the creative and entertainment pie for everyone here.

My project didn't start as quickly as planned, but there has been some progress. Hole #1 - Maiden 434 yds This hole originally featured a double plateau green. I've decided to move that template to another location on the course. I will tie it in with a principal's nose bunker. I did want to start the course with some geometry and chose a square green, so I went with a Maiden template. Maiden templates are dictated by the green - the back portion of the green having 2 plateaus separated by a valley. Maiden templates do not refer to the maiden (1st) hole, but this hole now covers both inferred meanings. By and large this hole remained the same between tee and green. The back tee was lengthened and now sits close to the front of the clubhouse. That clubhouse lawn area will be closely mown in its entirety and #1 tee will be adjacent to #18 green. Out of bounds runs along the wall to the left of the hole and can come into play for wayward tee shots. Bushes and shruberry will be planted on the other side of the wall after all of the routing and sculpting has been completed. Here's the new green:

Hole #2 - Corner 443 yds Fairway was expanded closer to the wall that creates the unique corner. The wall and its distinctive shape have been a call out card for this course, so there was really no reason to change this hole much at all. Some fairway contours were added that can create more advantage for an aggressive line. The green depth was not satisfactory for a hole of this length, so the green was expanded and a a small false front was added as well. More area for pin placements to the left of the bisecting mound was created as well.

I'm enjoying this - thanks for sharing. I like the arrows - are you just using PPT or something to layer onto the picture?

Thanks. I'm glad to share some of the thoughts I've got on this project. I use a tool called SnagIt. You can edit screenshots and add objects and lines, etc.

Hole #3 - Short 143 yds Teeing area was expanded and angles will differ based on tees played. The green was recontoured to create pin placements short right. The thumbprint is more drastic than the previous version. Bunkers were widened, the grass slopes were made steeper and edges were cleaned up. Pin placements shown above will remain in tact through publishing. Though there hasn't been much altering taking place on the last 2 holes, big changes are coming on #4 (Road). Hope to have it completed tomorrow.

When MSFT added its Snipping Tool, I thought SnagIt went the way of many useful tech tools. I'll check it out again - thanks.
