Hi all I realise that pot bunkers are pretty much impossible to do perfectly in this game, but was looking for thoughts on two main approaches I'm looking at (or whether I'm completely going down the wrong path with either). Option 1 is that I just spline in the bunker texture and sculp and have fairway surrounding. This has the effect of the ball running into the bunkers without getting stuck on a collar of rough surrounding the outside, which always seems unrealistic to me. The downside is that sometimes on playtesting, I'm finding the ball is essentially rolling around the bunker and then out the other side (doesn't happen when it hits the sand, but does when skirting around the surround). Option 2 is to add a rough face to the bunker a little like the one below (very quick effort so please don't judge too harshly!). The means that the balls doesn't ever roll out the pot and that, it should still accept a ball that runs into the bunker without getting stuck in the rough collar. The main problems with this are: - it takes an eternity to do them this way (and I've got well over 100 pots on the current course so will be a massive undertaking) - I'm not convinced they look great. Any thoughts at all (including any tips on how to do these better) would be appreciated! There is a danger that I'm over-thinking all of this... TIA!

You’re right it’s next to impossible to get them looking great, you can use the island delta theme and leave the soil exposed on the face which looks good or you can use your current method but just go into settings and turn bunker roll and firmness down so if it hits the sand it stays there

The main thing to accept is that you’re at least the 50th designer whose tried to overcome the pot bunker frustration...so know that you’re not alone in trying to figure out a good solution. I think the second one looks pretty good given that we can’t build sod walls. As paddy said, make sure to turn down firmness and roll so the balls stay in the sand a bit better.

To do it right takes time, no way around it. There are tutorials you can watch. I decide on my bunker locations then spline my fairway around the bunkers. This generally requires two splined fairways that you carefully merge together on one side of the bunker. Some tutorials suggest filling the spline with brushes, but I find that is harder to edit. I use brushes for my bunker and make sure there is a little heavy rough between the bunker and splined fairway. If you want the low side to have fairway to the edge of the bunker, you can adjust the spline to do that or touch up with a fairway brush. Time consuming and tough to get looking just right.

The rough face at least gives the impression of a stacked sod wall. I don’t like the all fairway one simply because there is no way you’d be able to mow it IRL.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Think I'm going to have to bit the bullet and re-do the bunker surrounds...

Option two. Joe and I did them a bit like that on Ainsdale and think that’s the best way to go.

Option two. Joe and I did them a bit like that on Ainsdale and think that’s the best way to go. Yeah - I know you're right, just absolutely not what I wanted to hear Made a start redoing them last night. 10 down - 84 to go. Probably a sign I've got too many as it stands, so taking it as an opportunity to think about whether they're all needed and add to challenge / playability.

Work out which are integral to the hole’s strategy, which are vital to framing/visuals and ditch the rest. It’s also a great way to decide whether you’re bunkering each hole in a similar way and whether you need to vary strategy etc. Know the pain - I’ve just redone about 20 on the Sandbelt course and it’s a killer. Well worth it though.
