Ayers Point Golf Club by arcticfuryWelcome to what your scheduler considers to be the first major of the year. There are no official majors on CC, but every once in a while I like to give you a course that will test all aspects of your game. I would make sure you're tempo is on point or make sure you guard against the big miss. You will score here if you're on point, but the big numbers can approach quickly if you aren't. You're coming in off of a storm.. high winds and soft conditions will great you in round 1. After that, things will die down on the wind and firm up on the course. The weather caused a delay to start round 3, so greens didn't get mowed and we're up a tee to compensate. Good luck!

Last week someone asked for a preview of the course so I thought I’d try to write one for this week just to help myself and others out. I don't work for the website or the game but I usually take notes so might as well share my opinion from 3 practice rounds.
Ayers Point
An Arctic Fury course,(definitely a top designer), 71-7013, Delta-themed. Mostly average size fairways and greens. The default is a dark, dreary day but it’s not as dark as last week’s Bandemere default setting. I played the course 3 times – once with all defaults with ghosts, once on a light cloud afternoon and then a sunny morning. The default round felt most intimating, the course was creepy with its menacing skies, scattered spooky sycamores, steep rock cliffs and daunting approach shots early in the round jumping from cliff to cliff, but it brightened a bit and played further inland as I played so I felt safer. East-based winds mostly are being used this week according to the weather report. The first few holes have a tailwind but then many have a headwind later. Lots of downhill holes, the par-5s allow eagle chances, the par-3’s can be daunting depending on their location and though there are some long par-4’s, most are downhill.
The handicap is 74.8 at around 8000 plays. For comparison... Ayrshire Gailes 76.2 AYERS POINT 74.8 Tasoto 74.1 Acadia 73.8 Windstone 73.1 Bandemere 72.4 Cardinal Pines 71.5
Hole-By-Hole 1) 4-416. The opening tee shot on a light dogleg left plays from one cliff, over water to another cliff, similar in style to Pebble Beach’s 8th hole. The entire hole plays on a cliff alongside the river. A 3-wood is suggested with two bunkers narrowing the fairway at around the 300-yd mark. A wedge approach needs to avoid three greenside bunkers to reach a relatively easy green.
2) 5-524. Another light dogleg left, it’s downhill playing alongside the river. The cliff edges cut into the fairway and there’s a tree partially blocking a second shot on the right. The 200-plus yard approach is at a green with the cliff edge on its left and a rock wall to its right. A likely birdie can be achieved without much difficulty, perhaps an eagle.
3) 4-469. A full left dogleg with a downhill drop off the tee, it angles around water like several Bay Hill holes giving a choice of how much water one wants to travel over. The choice leaves a 120-170 yard approach. The closer to the easy green, the more uphill the approach.
4) 3-178. This par-3 has an intimidating tee shot jump from one cliff to another, there’s not a lot of wiggle room for the tee shot which approaches the green sitting on the cliff edge, surrounded by bunkers.
5) 4-319 A downhill drivable par-4, a cliff cuts off the fairway at 250. The hole makes you think off the tee. Hybrid is the safest bet as using a driver or wood makes the heart beat fast. The approach is to an easy but small green.
6) 4-447 A severe dogleg right par-4 asks for a fade off the tee. An easy wedge/short iron approach makes this a birdie opportunity with a proper drive.
7) 5-551. A par-5 with a partially split fairway, the driver will have to avoid numerous interior fairway bunkers. A second shot to the green will be downhill and reachable but 7 bunkers may interfere with an eagle chance. Into the wind, it plays like a 3-shot par-5.
8) 3-209. The second par-3 is downhill over a pond and long bunker with the road alongside right. There are runoffs stemming from both sides of the green.
9) 4-466. A scenic, but difficult (#2 handicap) downhill par-4, the fairway is split in two by water. The approach from the left fairway is over water to a green severely sloped in the back-right.
10) 5-533. A scenic and more inviting hole. Another extra-thinking tee shot attempts to conquer cliffs cutting into the fairway. The second shot approach faces a lot of danger with the green so close to the cliff edge.
11) 4-301. A second drivable par-4, this is also downhill and straightaway. A runoff fairway on the left and beach on the right makes this one of Ayers Point’s easiest holes.
12) 3-134. The shortest par-3, one can choose an iron or wedge depending on the wind. The green, like most here, is of easy/average difficulty.
13) 5-557. A drive off the tee to the fairway leaves a 250-yard approach on this dogleg right uphill par-5.
14) 4-474. A long, downhill dogleg left par-4, the tee shot must deal with water on the right and the green stretches around a bunker with false fronts on both sides. An easier approach leaves an easier chance to scramble for par after a bad tee shot.
15) 3-230. The #1 handicap and longest par-3, the green sits at the end of two water bodies with rocks and bunkers to the sides. Any shot long is safe. The Saturday pin is tough at 242 yards away, tucked in the back right corner of the green.
16) 4-487. Another fairway split by water, the long par-4 has a medium-length approach after the drive.
17) 3-210. A final downhill par-3, the cliff sits to the right of the green though this par-3 isn’t as difficult as 15.
18) 4-509. The final hole, a long, downhill par-4, #3 handicap has OB along the right and bunkers in the center, splitting the fairway into a lower tier and an upper tier. A driver is required as a 3-wood could leave a 250-yard approach. The long 2nd shot is over water to a wide green with the crowd surrounding anticipating a fun finish.
Hopefully sharing some notes on the course helps, it's definitely a great course that's fair and enjoyable to replay. I'm in CC-D and relatively new to the game so take my notes with a grain of salt - you players mostly could kick my butt anyway without my notes!

Nice looking course (I certainly couldn’t make one that comes close).
However, there are wayyyy too many areas that are marked in play, which should be OB. Yeah I think I’ll attempt that 179yd uphill off the rocks one more time. I know we can drop (and I did), Im just saying it should be marked like any appropriate course would be, plain and simple..
To the dude that shot that in CC-I, you have my respect. I was in Euros on TGC 2019, now I can barely break par since the game got 2k’ed.
I’ll give this game credit though, real golf causes me 60 bucks a pop to feel this frustrated. I only had to pay that once for this gem!

CC-A : Went -10, -4, -12, -9 for a -35 total Great first round and held it together in the last 4 holes (which are all bloody tough). Slow start in Rd2 and stupid error on one of the short par 4's on the front 9 ended up a double but recovered, only to struggle in those last 4 holes. Happy with -12 in Rd3 off the ladies tees. Last round was going steady apart from a couple of silly errors, then had a 51 footer on 17 and a chip in from the back of the green to finish with 2 birds. Both shots were motoring when they hit the pin so fist pumps all round when they dropped. Lots of thought required off the tee and if your tempo's off, look out. Lots of drop offs and creeks to catch the wayward drive. I didn't fluff too many drives, just some off tempo approaches. Good luck all.

What kind of slack green staff don't mow the greens? I worked on a golf course in my first job and mowed greens in driving rain one day, got completely soaked and went home early but they were still done! 🤣
(Just kidding around although I did do that).
Just finished my first round at -7. Pretty happy with that. Thought I'd play a few holes before making some dinner but with 3 birdies in the first 4 holes I decided to keep going. Tempo was nice and consistent and putting was going well. A couple of bogeys in the last 3 holes put a bit of a dampener on it but overall I'm not disappointed.

15-18 felt like Amen corner, some TOUGH holes but this course is scorable and beautiful. I think scores will be lower this week than in the past.

Nice course and challenging as it should be. Staying out of the water is paramount to decent scoring. The 18th hole is a b!tch...for me at least.

70 68 = -4 after two. Probably another missed cut. But I did have this on hole 9. Pretty much sums up my game. lol

Well, since I was already at least 8 over, it's irrelevant that I ended up in an unrecoverable unplayable to the right of 15 (pretty sure). Wasn't in the water, couldn't see my golfer, and unplayable just backed me out into the water so 4 at her than take a '/', I bailed..
I hate to abandon a tourney, much less a round, and I guess it will knock me down to 'L' for the dnf ... or will it show I did not start at all from the Tour's p.o.v. ?

New on the CC-B tour after qualifying last week. Had a good 1st round front nine going until double bogey on 9. Worked hard to overcome that and did until 18 with another double. Ended up shooting -3 R1. Much better on round 2 with a -7. Got stuck on the rocks one time but got lucky, the other time I got stuck and had to go in water. Lovely course though!

Couldn't really get any momentum until the last round. I know I will be missing the cut at even. First round hit the ball in the water 3 times, twice on one hole. Never did that in my practice round.
Swing felt off this week.

I forgot which Par 3 it was but the cliff was on the right side and a few big trees sticking out and my tee shot was heading water bound as I put my head down and only to look at the splash but the ball miraculously hit the branch perfectly and then ricocheted to the hole and hit the flag hard and stopped a few feet away.. I missed the stupid easy putt but got a gift par.
And I did the same on Hole 9 with the huge rocks on the right side of the green.
It will Never happen again with two shots like that in the same round.
