So are you going to explain? Is this the two layers of water trick?

I’m pretty sure he’s doing the two water thing. I tried this on a course I’m working on right now but decided it looked better just trying to blend the sand as best as I could with the tan strip. I think this could work well with a beach on a lake or a lagoon or something but over-laying water over the ocean causes you to lose the movement of the ocean water. Just seemed way to calm for a seaside beach to me.

It is two layer of water. The sea does go calm with the upper layer of water as I found it only works at sea when the upper layer is just above the sea. I get the bottom water layer as low as it can go with the sea. Inland things are easier. To make the beach island, I first made a hole, then added a water layer just below the rim. I made a bunker spline all around the hole. Then I made a second layer of water and dropped it below the first. Then I sculpted the island up out of the water.
