Encountered this twice now, on the TGCT Q-School course (Evangelist) and on the Official Riviera CC.
Is this a purposeful thing to thwart players who aim for them for extra carry, or just accidental ?

They're real things. You get them a lot in the southeast.

Not just the Southeast, Pine Valley in New Jersey has sand cart paths, as does Sand Hills in Nebraska. You shouldn't aim for the cart path anyway, they really tear up your golf ball
