WAIT for the new Nvidia cards the RTX 3070 will be a beast for the money. The RTX 3060 also for your price range, waiting to get the 3080 myself, a card that is half the price of a 2080ti and 30 % faster. Crazy to buy a 20 series card right now. Amd cpu all the way also, love my 12 core 3900x 😜

Wow thanks guys. I will text him a link to this. I do not think I would want to build one at first. Sam I may have missed it but he could go right from the PC to his TCL TV right? There must be a HDMI adapter? Yes if the TV has an open HDMI port than you can connect the computer to it.

My son who is 12 is wanting one to be with his buddies. I'm a console guy so a little clueless on what would be good. Looking at 800 to 1200. Looking for something plug and play? Not sure that is possible. I know a lot you guy run pc so any help would be appreciated. Also I think you can go right to a 4K hd tv right?
These guys have all given you great advice. Here are the only things I would elaborate on-
- Regarding your question about connecting your computer to a tv. All current video cards have an HDMI output these days. So all you need is a regular HDMI cable. However, if your son is going to be gaming, a monitor is better. While TVs support 1080 or even 4k resolution, they typically do not have the refresh rate and response times that computer monitors have. And we all know what input lag can do for games like this. It will really affect him if he wants to play shooter games also.
- Building your own computer or getting someone to do it for you, is WAY better and you get more bang for your buck. The big box store models are cheaper, but you are paying a big markup that you don't need to pay, for cheaper parts, and a lot of times people find those store made models have a hard time being upgraded. If you have your own built, its more future proof, you can upgrade parts of it later, instead of the whole thing.
- If your son wants to have a hand in building it, LET HIM. I learned to build computers, and how to do hardware, from an interest in gaming at an early age, and it has helped me throughout my career, immensely.
- Like hammers1man mentioned, if you can wait for the 3000 series video cards to come out, then by all means do so, they are going to be game changers. If you don't want to wait that long, I'd recommend getting a 1000 series like a 1070 or something. It will be tons cheaper, will run most anything out there still, and paying that low of a price for it means when the 3000 series are available then you don't feel bad for upgrading it right away.
