Round 1 in the books and very pleased with a -9. 2 eagles, one bad bogie, but played very well otherwise.
Thoughts on the course? The trees blocking the green need to go...I don't know why these are on any course. They have to be placed so strategically so they don't cause unnecessary issues...I'd rather they not be used. Other than that this is a heck of a challenge, as a US Open course should be. I seriously doubt I will match my 1st round score in the next 3 but that's OK...it's tough but fair. Good choice in my opinion.

Followed up my best performance of the year last week with a demo mark-worthy performance this week. Cant believe I started round 1 at +4 after 2 holes. Drive on #2 found its way into the water despite hitting the middle of the fairway first. Was only given the choice to re-hit from the tee.
Tough course, but whatever. F that tree on #7.

Wonder if anyone play-tested R4 pins.
If that's not an illegal pin, I would love to be educated on what one is...

-5 -9 -8 -6
-28
This will be well back as the top guys will get it to -40. Round #4 pin on #18 is definitely illegal, but what are you to do besides jam it in from the light rough with your putter. Course is tough, and unfair in a lot of ways but what US Open venue isn't. Enjoyed the challenge, but glad those rounds are behind me.

Remember fun? That was cool.
Being an old bugger - theoretically, I should have a chance to remember that far back.........but also due to old age, I can't remember that far back.....

Other than that this is a heck of a challenge, as a US Open course should be. Love a challenge. Love trying to work out how to play a hole. Love having alternative ways of doing so and having to choose between being aggressive or defensive. This course has none of that.
It gives you a tiny landing zone to leave yourself any putt, and there's probably about 20 greens over the 72 holes that were almost impossible to hold whatever you do.
So the only two skills being tested are hitting literally perfect shots and chipping. If you have a slightly wonkier swing or tempo issues you can basically forget it. There's no bail out. No thinking involved whatsoever.
In fact the course rewards you for deliberately missing the greens. At that point it ceases to be anything resembling a golf course and shouldn't be worthy of hosting a major.
This is where we are now. Anything goes as long scores are kept to some mythical acceptable level.

Played pretty well my opening round. Had a silly bogey on the back 9 to stop me from getting to double digits under. Carry on!

Did not have fun in the first round. Triple on 2 after kicking hard right in the water (again only drop back off the tee), plus 2 other silly bogeys on the front 9. Got it back to -1 but mistakes like that are tournament destroying when birdies come at a premium.
-6 R2, just couldn't get the putts I needed to fall. First missed cut in a while. Luckily things looking more rosy on the TST.

Going to put some effort and practice a few times before tasking this one.

Was playing the course and trying to stay afloat. Level par through 27 holes. Then caught a bit of a heater the last nine holes of R2 to end up -6 through two. That will keep my finish respectable, but I still think that's a MC. Figured things out a bit too late this week.
Shame, really. Had a really nice finish at the PGA Championship (top 30!), but all no demo mark MC's since then. I am the definition of filler on this tour, but I am okay with that. Someone needs to fill that role I suppose.
