Fellow Dirtbags, I just added another course for DBD2. This is my first LIdar Course. Les has been very instrumental in helping me get this airborne. Thanks Les! The course is a local course for me and I have played it countless times over the last 30+ years. The name is Newport News G.C. VA (L) It was originally known as Deer Run but the city bought it out years back. If you have time to play it let me know your thoughts, As always Thank You! . This might be my last course. A lot of time and work goes into these courses and hardly anyone outside the dirtbags plays them. So I am grateful you guys do play them. The Deer Run Golf Course is a spectacular Ed Ault designed Championship Golf Course. The 7,354 course will test the mettle of even the most experienced golfer. Cut among Virginia hardwoods, the players rarely see another group of golfers. Curious white tail deer and the abundance of wildlife have caused it to be listed on the National Audubon Society Registry. It has 4 sets of tees in line with the real life course. Pro club users may want to use the Blue Tees. Black Tees for Pro or Master. Wade got chance to play Newport News course last night did enjoy playing it off the tips with pro clubs it wasn’t that bad. Lidar did a good job of the terrain. The only thing I saw that might be better were a couple of fairways looked a bit angular did you click on the spline point and smooth them out, apart from that good job 👏 Thanks Les! Yes, I smoothed the fairways and the greens. It only seemed to move them a small bit.

Yes sometimes it does only move a little maybe the part of the fairway I saw didn’t have enough spline points to create a smooth curve. Still a nice little course though. There was one par three near the end of the round I think that had a stream running diagonally across it does it have water in it in real life. I’m only asking because my Hartlepool course has a couple across the fairway and in the summer they don’t have water in but I’ve never played it in the winter when I suspect it has. I tried putting water in them but it didn’t look right because the water was too shallow so I left it as a dry ditch.

Art Vandelay One for the Friday/Saturday show? Also Dom's Doume6307 updated course? Just a suggestion.

I gave the front 9 of Newport News a go earlier @sirwade59 and noticed a few things. As lessangster mentioned the splines on the fairway could do with a bit of smoothing, I noticed the green splines were the same. Also the greens didn't have a light rough surface around them which would affect the fairway/green transitions. Both of the above are quick fixes as you can smooth the splines by selecting a spline point, select sharpen/smooth then smooth path. To get the second surface around the green just click on a green spline point and choose secondary surface and pick light rough. After this make sure your secondary path width is the same width as the light rough on your fairway. What I suggest for the planting is try and keep to the same type of tree, then just resize them, turn them round and sink some down for a bit of variety. I'd suggest the same for the bushes as well especially enlarging them and sinking them down as they'll cover a larger area but not be too high. This is a personal choice and I know Les will disagree but I like to lower the sun down to highlight the slopes on the course and the bunkers.

Not much water at all in it so I just left them as dry ditches.

The lidar created the splines for the greens and fairways. I was surprised that there was so few of them. I tried to smooth the greens and fairways but it only moved them a small amount. Mike posted a short tutorial on green/fairway transitions by Meyo. It is a really good video. I like the idea of lowering the sun as well. I wasn't sure about the trees. I had to plant all of the trees. I wanted to use the same tree but thought it may not look right so I added the variety. The elevations were pretty much spot on with the real course so I was happy with that.

On a normal course I try and keep my splines 10 yards apart except on turns and near the green where I'll place them closer. Planting just takes a bit of time to get used to. The course played well and I didn't find any areas that were unfair. I'd suggest to design if you enjoy it and don't worry about people playing it. Murfhoffen is my 7th and probably best course in TGC 2019 but has 170 odd plays in over a month, which is a lot less than previous courses. So I'm trying not to be too concerned with the amount of plays or the opinions of others regarding my courses.

The splines for the fairways are dragged in from your tracing on OSM so if they are far apart they will be on your course as well.

I don't think at this point I could have done the course justice without the lidar. I actually enjoy making courses on the console. It seems I learn something all the time about designing. I just need to be patient and take my time. I tend to rush myself sometimes. I really enjoyed playing Murfhoffen and also Simon's Heartland. Mike's Bandon Dunes was spectacular as well! They all seem to be so smooth and natural and they flow well. My laptop is old and when I was making the lidar course, whenever I created something it would take 10 seconds for it to place it. That was everything lol. It was driving me nuts. You are right, I shouldn't worry about the number of plays and just have fun creating the courses. My son wants me to create a course for him and use the steppe them. He said the desert theme reminded him of Star Wars lol. Maybe I will use Big Horn Canyon or Firecliff as the course layout. It will be a little while though.

@sirwade59 design on the PS4 if the laptop is too slow and just experiment with different things. Don't be afraid to delete anything you don't like.
If your son is a Star Wars fan there's a course called Vader's Helmet you should check out.

Wade, I encountered the same problem while I was trying to do Cascada. There is no solution to speed up terrain sculpting, but for planting, spline movement, texture changes, it works a treat to use the ability in Chad's tool to remove the terrain and save the course under a new name (xxxx flat for example). If you do that and open the new course then Landscape flatten (blue brush) the entire plot with hard-the edged square brush and raise it so no water is showing. You will have a totally flat course where you can put trees, plants, adjust splines, basically anything that does not involve changing the terrain (you cannot flatten tees, for instance, or put in water) One thing though, when you do plant things, do not adjust the elevation of an object, just take it as it first appears. If you adjust elevation then it will not be on the ground when you put the Lidar terrain back. I find it best to use the "multi-plant" option and if you just want one plant or tree use the D-pad to shrink size or density - multi-plant objects always stick to the terrain. When you are ready to take a look at the course with terrain, import your "XXXX flat", mark the add terrain box and select the terrain file you saved when you removed it, then save it again under a changed name (heck, I have five different Cascadas because of that). The time between clicks on a flat course is less than a second on my middling laptop, as opposed to the 10 seconds on Cascada with the terrain. I recommend you try this out by adding plants to a few places and then putting back the terrain just to see if the plants are on the ground, before doing a whole course. Good Luck!

Week 1 Final Leaderboard A great turnout to kick off the new Season at Mike R's sandsaver01 recreation of Bandon Dunes which received very favourable reports and great to hear that it may be appearing on the Tours and it also saw a first time on the top of the podium for Andrew zorbacles who carded a very impressive 18 under for the 36 holes. Johnny evilgrin72 is always there or thereabouts but had to settle for 2nd place this week 1 shot back with a three way tie for 3rd of Jeff hoosierhoops24 Wade @sirwade59 and Les lessangster being a further shot behind. Hope to see you all out in force this week at Simon's SAM latest offering, Heartlands Golf Club. Onwards!!!
