A good amount of people chimed into the "worst hole in golf" discussion. Let's get positive and talk about the best holes in golf. Why are they they best? How would you play the hole? Have you played the hole?

Not so much response to this one.
I think you need to differentiate between best par 3, best par 4, best par 5. And even here one can differentiate even more - long and short (3,4,5). Two of the best par 4's in my opinion is found on The Brabazon course at The Belfry: the short reachable 10th and the long fantastic closing hole 18th.

Working on my response to this one still... trying to approach it from a two different viewpoints: aesthetics and playability. Both dictate how "ideal" of a hole it is in my opinion. The way a hole looks and sits in the land is what catches your eye first but how you then go about playing it could render a totally different perspective. An ideal hole meshes both viewpoints together seamlessly which I think makes for a great golf hole. Awesome thread and hopefully it sparks some really good discussions!

Haven’t played either but it’s hard to compete with 13 at Augusta and 16 at cypress point. Beautiful, heroic and strategic. 5th at Merion looks like a pretty cool par 4 that uses the tilt of the land to drive the strategy much like 13 at Augusta. Pretty much any hole at Pine Valley. 8th, 13th and 10th.
Of the courses I’ve played: Par 5: 4th at Bethpage: fantastic par 5. Par 4: 16th at pacific dunes: great little short par 4 that relies on the fairway draped over the landscape to provide the challenge. Par 3: 17 at Bandon trails is just a beautiful green site with a diabolical green.

How’d you swing that? I'm from Augusta and know some "people." Also played golf at Augusta University, so one day every year the golf teams from Augusta, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, and USC-Aiken would have the course to ourselves.

I designed Northwood Golf Club based on some of the best holes I've ever played. They aren't true rcr recreations but stay close to the real life holes.
In order of play on my course they are... 1st at Trentham Park. 3rd at Wolstanton 3rd at Nefyn & District Old nine 4th at Nefyn & District Old nine 5th at Beau Desert 10th at Keele (now closed) 7th at Barlaston 12th at Alsager 9th at Barlaston 10th at Newcastle-under-Lyme 4th at Leasowe 12th at Newcastle-under-Lyme 12th at Leek 14th at Welshpool 18th at Welshpool 3rd at Astbury 18th at Llanymynech 18th at Burton-upon-Trent

Never played it obviously, but I would submit Cypress Point #9. Driveable par 4 with an absolutely diabolical green set within some breathtaking dunes.
